IMPROVEMENT |N PIPE-visas.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 4 3,194, dated June 2l, 1864.

To all whom Ait may concern:

Be itlknown that I, FRANoIs GLAssER, of Mystic Bridge, in the county of New London and State ofConnecticut,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe Vises; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation of my improved vise with the parts ready for confining the pipe; and Fig. 2 is a similar elevation with the parts in the situation for releasing the same.

In all pi pe-vises with which Iam acquainted,

as heretofore constructed, it is necessary to enter the pipe endwise through the jaws. This, when the pipes are in the usual lengths, consumes much time and rapidly wears away the sharp serrated edges which are necessary to prevent the pipe from turning under the action of the cutting-dies, and it also renders necessary the previous removal ot' any coupli 1 gs, elbows, or other xtures which may happen to be attached thereto, while a bent pipe can be entered only with great difficulty.

The nature of my invention consists in a pipe'vise constructed with a hinge and latch or equivalent device in the frame, so arranged relatively to the jaws thereof as to permit of the frame -being readily opened for the entering or removal of a pipe in a lateral direction, and when closed to hold the same as firmly and securely as when the frame is of the usual entire form.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the construction and operation of the same by reference to the drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.

A is the base, which is bolted to the bench in the usual manner. Upon this base a-re cast two uprights, A A2, the upper end of A being formed with a projecting catch, a', and at the upper end of A2 is one-half of a strong hinge, a2, as represented. On one end of the piece B the other portion of the hinge c2 is formed, and when placed in the position shown in Fig. l the two portions A and B form a frame similar in general shape to those ordinarily employed, but adapted to open as shown :in Fig. 2.

C is a loop-shaped latch attached to a projection ou B, and adapted to catch over the projection a', and thus prevent the opening of the frame in the obvious manner; but by unlatchin g C from c the frame may be thrown open on the hinge a2 with very slight vexertion. The serrated steel jaws D are attached t0 the uprights A A2. There are two of these jaws with an opening between, into which the sliding jaw E enters, as in previous vises. This jawE is attached to a follower, F, adapted to slide in the frame B, and adjusted therein by the screw G in the wellknown manner. p

The operation of my improved viseis plainly shown in the drawings, and will be obvious to any mechanic.

The advantages dueto my invention are the rapidity with which a pipe of any length or form may be entered or removed without the necessity of first removing any of the xtures therefrom, and the superior durability of the jaws from the entire absence of the most serious wear to which those in the ordinary vises are subjected. It will be seen that the movable jaw requires to be adjusted but to a v -cure by Letters Patent, is

A pipe-vise so constructed as to open to permit the entrance and removal of the pipe in a direction perpendicular to its axis by means distinct from that employed for clamping the same, and to allow, when closed, of being firmly secured against being opened by the action of the clamping device, substantially as herein set forth.
