Description

(No Model.)
S. WHITNEY.
GHURN.
Patented June 24, 18910.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOLOMON YVI-IITNEY, OF MANHATTAN, KANSAS.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,906, dated June 24, 1890.
Application filed December 23, 1889. Serial No. 334,623. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, SOLOMON WHITNEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Manhattan, in the county of Riley and State of Kansas, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the vaccompanying drawings, and to letters of' reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention and is an end view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
This invention lrelates to certain improvements in churns, having for its object to simplify construction, to render fully eiective the action of the dasher, and to effect the adjustment of the dasher, so as to vary its angle of presentation to the cream or contents of the vessel or receptacle, as may be desired, as also to utilize the churn-body in the churning operation; and it consists of the detailed construction and combination of parts, as will fully appear from the following description and accompanying illustration, and is especially designed as an improvement upon Letters Patent granted to me September l0, 1889, and numbered 410,949.
In accordance with my invention I employ, preferably, a cylinder or churn-bodyA of suitable capacity, which is provided at its ends or heads with hollow or tubular shaft-extensions or journals a a, which turn and are supported in the upper ends of the central uprights or bearings b of a base-frame B, resting on the floor or ground. One of the journals or shaft-extensions a a is provided with a handle F for the rotation of the cylinder or churn-body A.
C is the dasher, which is provided with a tubular support or sleeve C, from which project two arms 02, upon the outer ends of which is secured an angularly-disposed blade C3, suitably beveled at its outer longitudinal edge to advantageously eect or cut (as it were) the cream or contents of the cylinder or churnbody A as the latter is revolved.
The dasher sleeve or support O rests at its ends in the journals or shaftextensions a a, and through it extends an axial rod D,which is connected to it by a key or wedge b', inserted through an aperture b in said sleeve or support and engaging a coincident aperture or socket b3 in said rod. One end of the rod D projects beyond the inclosing shaft-extension or journal, and is there provided with an arm D at right angles therewith, the lower end of which has a knob c for its manipulation, while it carries directly above said knob an adjusting-pin d. A bar or are E, having a semicircularly-arranged series of apertures e e, is secured to one of the uprights b of the base frame or support B, so as to permit engagement with its apertures of the adjustingpin d, whereby the dasher is adapted to be adj usted so as to vary the angle of presentation of its blade to the contents of thel churn-body or cylinder, as may be desired. In effecting this adjustment the pin d is disengaged from one of the series of apertures c e and engaged with another or the desired one thereof, according to the angle it is desired to give the blade of the dasher. To the opposite end shaft-extension or journal of the churn-body is applied the handle or crank F for rotating the latter, as practiced in carrying on the churning operation.
G is the lid, which conforms to and closes an opening G in the circumference of the churnbody or cylinder A, through which the cream, dac., is put into the latter, and after churning is removed. This lid or cover is held removably in place by means of keepers f, secured to the body A at its edges, and eccentric levers or clamps f hung between upward extensions f 2 of said keepers and in slots f3 thereof, so that they bear upon said lid or cover, or upon metal plates f4, fastened to the latter.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
l. The combination, with the dasher having the hollow support or sleeve and means for supporting the same, of the axial rod coning a semioircularly-arranged series of aperro neeted to said sleeve and having an arm to tures engaged by said adj ust-ing-pin, Substan- `vary the angle of presentation of the dasher, tially as and for the purpose set forth.
substantially as set forth. In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature 2. The combination, with the flasher havin presence of two witnesses. ing, a hollow support or sleeve and means for SOLOMON VI-IITNEY. supporting the same, 0f the axial rod oonneotlVtnesses: ed to said sleeve and having an arm provided WALTER TAYLOR,
with an adj Listing-pin, and the bar orare hav- H. HOBSON.
