Description

UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
ELFAMEO M. NOYES, OF NEVARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN COM BS.
Specification forming part 0i Letters Patent No. d3,03, dated Juuc 7, 1864.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELFAMEO M. NoYEs, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combs; and I do h'reby declare the following to be. a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a finished comb. Fig. 2 represents au end section, and Fig. 3 represents a side section ot' comb.
My invention and improvement consist in a hair-comb formed by attaching a metallic back or casing to the body of the comb without rivets or cement, in such a way as to give sufficient strength and at the same time allow the back to be conveniently narrow and thin. I make the back of the comb narrow, and either square, rounded, or any other shape, according as I intend to have the shape of the back when completed, and the particular use to which the comb is to be applied. Along the sides of the back part ofthe comb I cut grooves, as shown in Fig. 2, into which the edges of the metallic back are fitted. The metallic back is made of brass or some other suitable metal, either in the form of atube, as represented in the accompan yin g drawings, or in any other required, the shape being wholly immaterial.` This metallic back is then closely fitted to the back of the comb in such a way that the edges of said metallic back or casing fit into the aforementioned grooves in the sides of the comb. The comb may then have the ends of the metallic back or casing closed down over the ends of the body of the comb, and in most cases this construction is preferable; but iu many cases this is not essentially necessary, as the pressure ofthe edges of the metallic back in the grooves in the sides is sufficient to keep said metallic back in its place. In this manner a neat and serviceable comb is manufactured, which may be made as narrow and light as may be required, and yet possess sufficient strength.
Combs as ordinarily made, or when made according to my improvement patented April 24, 1860, must necessarily be wider or thicker and heavier than when made according to my present improvement; and, further, in making combs of horn or ivory it was found ditiicult always to tiud material of the required length; butmyimprovement enables the manufacturer to make his combs of two or more pieces, the metallic back holding these pieces in position, and the metal, being closed down over the ends, keeps the pieces from sliding from their places, and also keeps the back from sliding from the comb; and, further, the backs thus attached are permanently secured without either rivets or cement.
Having thus fully described my invention,
