No. 430,253. Patented June 17, 1890.
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
JOHN REID, OF YONKERS, ASSIGNOR TO THE J. L. MOTT IRON WORKS, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED PLUN'GER,YNEEDLE, SPRAY, AND SHOWER BATH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,253, dated. June 17, 1890.
Application filed November 18, 1889. Serial No. 330,731. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: wheneverrequired, and the cocks A,B andD Be it known that 1, JOHN REID, a citizen of are easy of access by a person either outside the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the or inside the bath-tub. The tubular columns county of VVestchester and State of New York, H and H are connected at their lower ends 5 have invented an Improvement in Combined by balls and screw-bolts to the bath-tub, and 5 5 Plunge, Needle, Spray, and Shower Baths, of they rise vertically from within the same to which the following is a specification. the ring M, which firmly connects the upper This improvement is to meet the sanitary ends together, and this ring M is also con'- demands for bath-room fixtures that are open nected to the column H, that rises above the [O and accessible in all parts and separate from chamber 0, there being a cock E intervening 6c the walls of the room or any inclosures, and between such chamber and the column H. by my improvements the luxury of a first- The columns H? H are closed at their upper class bathing establishment with the plunge, ends, and the ring M is connected in suitable needle, and spray baths is brought into comcouplings or joints both to the columns H [5 pact form and adapted to private houses. At and H and to the columns H; but the 001- one end of a plunge bath-tub an upright umn H is continued above the ring M and frame of tubes is provided, having supply-. provided with an arm J, at the end of which pipes and cocks that admit water into the is a shower J, of any suitable construction, perforated tubes forming the spray or needle and the same is central, or nearly so, above 20 bath, or to the shower-bath at the upper part the ring M, and there is a valve or cook at F, of the frame, and there is a ring for a hangpreferably actuated by a chain and ring F, ing curtain, preferably of water-proof mateand the rising column H is stopped olt at L rial, the lower edge of which passes into the and water is admitted into such column above bath-tub, so that the water will all run back the plug L through the pipe K, which is at 25 into the bath-tub without being scattered the back ot the column H and extends from upon the floor. the chamber C to the upper part of the col- In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective umn H above the plug L; hence water is alview of the bath-tub and attachment comlowed to pass by this pipe K to the shower plete, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section at one independently of the valve E in the rising 3 end of the bath-tub through the rising pipe. column H.
The bath-tub P is of any desired character, Connected with and opening into the colpreferably of metal and porcelain inlined, umn H, slightly above the cock E, are the and the hot-water pipe at the outside of the ,curved pipes I, which extend around and are .bath connects with a pipe A within the bath coupled. to the columns H and H and these 35 by a coupling-and-ball connection, and the curved pipes I, together with the similar pipes cold-water-supply pipe is similarly connected I and 1 open into such columns H and H to the pipe B within the bath-tub, and these and these curved pipesI I I and the columns pipes rise to a suitable height and are pro- H and H are perforated with ranges of fine vided with cocksA B at the junction of the holes, and the ends of the curved pipes I I 4 hot and cold water pipes with the central are connected by suitable coupling with the 0 chamber or mixing-column O, and below this pipe D and column H, respectively; but the chamber 0 is a cock D and pipe D, the latcurved pipes I do not open into the pipe D. ter extending down into the bath and 'ter- It will now be apparent that when the cock E minating with an open muzzle, there being is opened the water will pass into the column 45 by preference a coupling surrounding the H, and by the curved pipesII will pass into pipe and bolted to the bath-tub to hold the the columns H and H and thence into the lower end of this pipe D firmly in position. curved pipes I, and the fine jets formingthe By means of the cock D hot or cold water, or needle-bath will pass through the perforations a mixture at any temperature, can be disin the curved pipes II I and the columns 5 charged throughthenozzleGinto thebath-tnb H H and the quantity of water issuing in these needle-jets can be regulated by the cock E, and the temperature can be determined by the cooks A B. It will now be apparentthat by the cooks A B the temperature of the water in any part of the apparatus can be regulated. By the cock D the discharge of the water into the bath P can be determined, and by the cock E the needle-bath can be regulated, and by the cock or valve F water can be admitted to the shower when desired, and all the parts of the apparatus are open and easily accessible, so that they can be kept clean, and when manufactured of brass or similar metal the whole apparatus becomes ornamental and acceptable in appearance.
I provide acurtain R of suitable materialsuch as rubber clothand the same is suspended from rings around the circular ring M, and this curtain can be of a length so that its lower end hangs within the upper part of the bath-tub P, and the curtain can be drawn around the bathing apparatus or pushed back to a greater or less extent, as desired, either when the bath is in use or when it is out of use.
By my improvements the bath-tub is availed of as a support for all the pipes. No rigid case or inclosure is used. The pipes are all open and accessible. The vertical pipes or columns connected to the tub support the perforated segmental spray-pipes, and also the curtain-hoop and curtain and the shower. The cocks are easy of access to a person in the bath-tub or outside of the same, and the curtain can be pushed back out of the Way when the spray or shower is not in use, and the whole apparatus is accessible and easily kept clean.
I do not claim any of the separate parts of the apparatus, as these have before been used.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the bath-tub and the hot and cold water supply pipes A andB and cooks A B, with connections passing through the tub, of the mixing-chamber C, the cock E, rising column H, curved perforated pipes connected with the rising column, and the columns H and H at the ends of the curved pipes and connected at their lower ends to the bath-tub, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the bath-tub and the hot and cold water supply pipes, of the columns H H connected at theirlower ends to the bath-tub, the curved perforated pipes extending from said columns, the rising pipe H and means for showering, and the cocks connected with the said pipes, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a bath-tub, of columns connected with and rising from the bath-tub, the perforated pipes for the needlebath supported by said columns, a showerbath, and the supply-pipes and cocks, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the bath-tub, of columns connected at their lower ends with the bath-tub, curved perforated pipes connecting such columns, the hot and cold water supply pipes and cocks, a mixing chamber with which the hot and cold water supplypipes are connected, a pipe and cock leading downwardly from the mixing-chamber into the bath-tub, a shower-bath, and pipe and cock leading from the mixing-chamber up to the same, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with the bath-tub, of columns connected at their lower ends with the bath-tub, curved perforated pipes connected with the columns and forming the needle-bath, hot and cold water supply pipes and cooks and a mixing-chamber, a pipe and cook leading from the in ixin g-chamber to the curved perforated pipes, a shower-bath, a pipe leading from the miXing-chamberup to the showerbath, and a cock or valve to the same, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 14th day of November, 1889.
JOHN REID.
