Description

UNITED STATES Pnfrinnr OFFICE.
FREDERICK J. SEYMOUR, OF -WOLGOTTVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT |N- APPARATUS Foa 4I'AccslNcs LACINGs.
Specification forming pa'rt of Letters Patent No. 412,798, dated May 17, 1864.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. SEY- Ln OUR, of Wolcottville, in the county of Litch# field and State of Connecticut, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Machine for Tagging Laces for Shoes, 85e.; and I-do hereby declare 'the followin g to be a full, clear, -a-nd exact `description of my said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of thisspeciiication, whereinl Figure 1 is a plan of my said machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectionof the same at the center of the machine. Fig. 3 is an elevation of part ct' 'the machine'with 4a portionof the hed j in section, and Fig. 4' is a plan representing the dies that compress the 'piece of sheet metal forming the tag. I
The object ot'm'y machine is'to take braided, woven, or other characters of laces for shoes, corsets, 85e., and wrap around the same, at certain distances apart, pieces of thin sheet metal to form tags or double tags, to be afterward separated by any suitable cutter to form the laces.-
The general operations performed in tagging the braid are as follows: The braid is drawn alo'nga given distance. Apiece of sheet metal is passed beneath the braid and cut oif.
of metal into a groove, bending the piece of sheet-'metal into a U shape with the braid within it. .One ofthe sides of said strip isncxt. turned over-the braid and pressed thereto by said die, after which the other side isturned over and similarly pressed, as .illustrated A-in largesize in Figs. 5,-6,`and 7. 'The tag or double tag now being complete, 4the .braid is raised with the tag from the groove and drawn -along-the. next length. The sheet metal is passed infas before, and cut oft', while the pressing-die remains stationary, and then the next tag is compressed and wrapped to its place, as before, f
In the drawings, a is a shaft driven by coinpetent. power and sustained in the bearing a on ih'e frame. Ir. The red line c represents the braidor lace to bctagged passing through guides d d on the secondary'be." e. l
fand g arc gears communicating a contnuous rotarymotion to the. cam-shaft h in bearings It' on'b, The sha-fth is to revolve at the A same speed as the shaft a, and hence the cams carried by said shaft revolvel once each com-V plete movement of. the'machine. 4
o is a vertical slide pressing-die actuated by' thefpitman n', connecting with a crank-pin ou `the disk a on the endof the shaft Vl, these gaats being sustained by the arm m from' the et A At the'end ofthe shaft l isa pinion, k, gearing with a wheel, t', on the shaft a. This wheel is to be six times the diameter ofthe pinion k', and theteeth on one-half et' said wheel are removed, so that the pinion 7c is .rotated three ytimes while the wheel i is making a half-revolution, giving a corresponding, number of -re.
ciprocations to 'the pressing-diep, and'thcn said parts remain stationary while'thesaid 4 teeth of t'` pass clear ot the pinion k, and this bolt 16 is withdrawn; just before the half-eir- 'cle of teeth ou t reach the. pinion, by means-of the lever n2 on a fulcrum, 15,'acted on by thecam s' onthe shaft h. Adic comes down andforces the lace and piece p is a wheel on the. shaft ,gearing to the wheel p on the shaftV q in boxes q' orb. The wheelp is twice the size of the wheel p', but has teeth only half-way around its periphery; hence .the shaft q will make a completerota tion during half the rotationof a, and remain quiescent during tlre other half-'rotation of a.
In order to. prevent the momentum of the shaft 1V and parts attached moving said parts after the gears p p p ass out of contact, I provide an arm, g2 extending downward, as shown by dotted lines inFig.- 1, and this arm, as the gears separate, comes up against a stop', 19, having pressed back a spring-latch, 18, that springing over the other side of saidarin retains it in place until thestop 19 is withdrawn by the4 lever q, fulcrumed on the bede, and acted upon by the cani s2, just before the gear p takes the wheel p', as before. A spring, 27,'nioves-the lever g"- and stop 19` back to place as the cam .v2 clears the-end of the lever.
At .the end of the shaft q is a disl:,1, earrying -iu its periphery a pin.; that, whenthe .machine is, at rest, is contiguous to 'the end of an; inclined groove in the wheel 2 on the shaft '3,1m bearlngs'l, which communicates bygear- Wheels 5 with'the*feeding-rollers 7 and 6in" the standards 8, which rollers pass thethin strip of sheet metal alougbctvv'eeu the plates` r', to be cut 'cand form the ta g, as hereinafter described. j lt-will-be'sen that as soon as the shaftq commences toiurmthepinin l ,passing across the wheel 2 4 in the diagonal groove .thereof', givesthe necessary movement'to the rollers ,to feedin the strip of material, and'if a wider strip of material isf-required` for the tag the wheel 2 .can be removed and another vsubstituted having -a less'n'u'mber of grooves and a greater angle to each or a smaller feed Vennbe .obtained by-'a wheel2 with a larger number otlgrooves and each at a less angle.
' The strip of sheet metal, when i'ed in, is held to a. bedshear, 10, by a clamping lever, l9,-
ac'ted upon by a cam, s, on h, while a suitable cutter separates the' piece of metal' to form the tag. l have represented a-circular rollingshear, l1, on'a carrage,'12, that at thep'ropcrmoment is rolled''across the strip of.
metal and then drawn back by the action- -of the eccentric 144 and connectingrod 13. These operations of feeding' in' the strip ot' sheet metal, clamping, cutting-oli' the end for the tag, 'and drawing back .the cutter 1.1, take place while the pressing-die o'i's elevated and stationary; then the gearft rotates the pinion4 7.', and the die o carries ythe center ofthe strip Voi? niet'al or tag-blank down into a'g'roove in the 'block e' on the bed, P', forminggthe same into a U shape with the lace' or braid within 'the same, for 'the braid chad been raised above the tag-blank, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3,lby the' eyes 20 20, at the ends of the groove in e',
actuated by the lever t, on the'fulcrum-t, receiving motion from the lever t2 on the t'ulcrum 21, that is acted upon by the cam sa. This cam s3 ,clears the end ofthe lever t2 as the die o tirst descends, and the spring tadraws down 4said eyes 20, causing Vthe lace or braid to 'remain in the Ushaped tilg-V blank When pressed down by the die o. .As
' the die o rises, a fold11gslide,'22, in the block e.,'"acted upon by the lever u. on the fulcrumw, noved by the cam projection 25 on s', comes up vland folds one sidel of the-taglblank over the braid, as in Fig. 6. The die o- 'now descends the second time, presses that .to its place, and as it risesthc foldiugsldc23 on the opposite side, acted on by the lever u onthe f'ulcrum"l moved by thc camprojection 26 on s', comes up `and folds the' other side ot the tag=blank over thc first, as -seleu in Fig. .7, and the die o de'scendsthe third time, pressing -thctag firmly together, thus making a perfect metallic tag yor double tag around the braid. The eyes 20 20 are now raised by s.-lil'ting the tag and braid out ofthe groove( in c', thc lace or' braid is drawn along there. quired\ distancc, by suitable mechanism, and
the operations proceed as before.
The foldin gsld'es are d rawn'buck by a spring, 30,'bet'vyeen'the levers u and u', and L prefer to makethe ends of the'slides 23 and 22 them selves of separate pieces, notched ntothe slides, as' shownso as to move back and forth with said slides, but pressed down by the at 'springs 24,' so that the end of each slide may yield and slightly rise .over the tag-blank'in tplding itdown ,upon thebraid, should that braid be thick, and the folding-slides hence do 'jaw c', and this jaw'u' is acted uponvby an' arm, 28, to the cam 29 onithe side of s2, so as 4to hold thebraid rmly and prevent its being drawn along while the tag lis being put on,-
but releasethesame bytheactiou of the 4spr'ig27 `when each-tag is completed, sothat the next length ot braid can beA drawn along. The' means for drawing along and Vmeasuring ott' the braid to determine the distance between one tagand the next do not form any part -of my invention. I have, however, shown such a device,.consisting of th'cgrooved wheelv p/,whose circumference-1s. to' correspond to.
length of each lac'e. This wheel y is on a shaft, y', with a gear, y, to dgear, g3, on the shaft q, so ,that when this shat'tq makes a revf elution (the ja'ws c u being-open) the wheel y i turns and draws theflaceror braid'along.
The tagged braid is Wound upona reel or spool, z, Aon a shaft, z', :with al pulley, z2, -and, belt z?, to a pulley, z, on a. 1t will be understood that the belt z slips on its pulleys when the lace or braid is being tagged and lis stationary. 4The reel z might .be looseupon its. `sha-ft and a friction disk or spring applied to its side to produce the rotation or tofallowthjeA -reel to remain stationary while. the shaft continues its revolution. I
Y The wheel y may ne changeable, so as to provide for different lengths of lace by varying thesizc ofyvheel employed.'
