Specification of Letters Patent No. 4,227, dated October 9, 1845.

The front part orhalf CZ of the perforated plate cZ (Z1 may be separated from the other half and made movable or so as to be moved hereby declare that the nature of my invention and the manner in which it operates are fully described and represented in the following description and the drawings which accompany and make part of the same and by the letters and figures marked thereoni that is to say:

My invention is calculated for planing the surfaces of sawed shingles, or pieces of wood, whose thickness varies from end to end.

Figure, l of the aforesaid drawings denotes a plan or top view of the said machine, and Fig. 2 a vertical, central, and longitudinal sect-ion of it.

It consists of a series of knives cz a, Fig 2, each applied to one of a series of arms c c proj ect-ing from a horizontal shaft Z9 and arranged in other respects, so as to operate like the knives or cylinder of a common rotary planing machine. The said shaft b and its knives are, disposed beneath a fixed horizony tal plate Z Z1 through a rectangular opening or orifice c e1 of which the knives are made to play in such manner as to bring their cutting edges, as they revolve, just above the upper surface of the plate. A horizontal roller f is placed at one edge of the plate CZ Z1 and another and similar roller g at the other and opposite edge of it in the positions with respect to each other and the plate, as seen in the drawing.

Directly above the central part of the perforated plate is a roller ZL whose journals are supported in levers Z m, Z m, each of which turns vertically on a fulcrum at its end m 4and has a weight a hung on its end Z by which the said roller is borne down upon, or nearly down upon, the plate Z (Z1.

rThere is a roller z' placed over each of the toward or from the other half and be fixed in any desirable position with respect to the same or the cutters or knives by one or more screws 0 passing through its edges. In this case that edge of this portion of the plate, against which the knives or cutters act, should be made sharp or reduced to an angular form, as seen at p in Fig. 2. The said movable portion of the rest plate thus becomes a gage which is to be moved farther from or nearer to the path of the cutting edges of the rotating knives, as circumstances may require, for dierent kinds of wood operated upon. By means of this gage I am enabled to plane very knotty or cross grained stuff in a very smooth and even manner.

The several parts of my machine, as above described, are to be supported by a suitable frame and put in operation by power properly applied to them; the directions in which the feed rollers and cylinder of knives revolve being indicated by arrows marked on them respectively.

The. operation of my machine is as follows: A Shingle, which is a thin wedge shaped piece of wood, as represented by dotted lines at 7c, Fig. 2, is passed into the machine, between the feed rollers g z' and over and'upon the upper surface of the plate CZ (Z1, and is borne or pressed down upon the plate by the rollers z' h and is Carried forwardby the revolution of the feed rollers. As it passes along over and upon the plate Z cZ1, the cutting cylinder planes or reduces its under surface. It escapes from the machine, through or between the discharging rollers z' f, which aid in drawing it over the plate CZ d1.
