SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,905, dated February 25, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES M. BURGESS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Latch-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in sheet-metal latch-cases; and the object of my improvement is to better arrange the divisionline of the two parts of the case with reference to the latclrmortise.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my latch-case. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, looking at the outer edge; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 00 0c of Fig. 1.

My invention is in the nature of an improvement upon the latch shown and described in my patent, No. 399,240, of March 12, 1889, and in its general construction is substantially the same as shown and described in said patent, although some of the features of said patent are omitted.

The case is composed of top and bottom pieces eand two side plates5 and 6 the edges of which at the right and left are turned down beyond the inner face of said plates .to form flanges which meet each other and con stitute the vertical edges of the case.

In my former patent the meeting line at the outer or face-plate edge extended directly through the latch and bolt mortises 7 8, so that a part of each mortise was 011 both sides of said line. I now make the main portion of said line 9, Fig. 2, extend on a line which if continued would divide the latch and bolt I mortises 7 and 8, and I form offsets 1O 10 in the division-line above and below the latchmortise 7 and extend the division-line ll be tween said offsets along one of the vertical sides of said latch-mortise, whereby the entire latch-mortise is to one side of said divisionline 11. This prevents a division or break 5 occurring in the top and bottom horizontal edges of the latch-mortise, so that they present a smooth surface not liable to be caught by the beveled outer end of the latch 12, and

at the same time the face-plate or front edge of the case is formed by two flanges that project beyond the inner faces of the side plates with their edges abutting each other in a plane passing between the confronting inner sides of said plates.

I have shown this improvement as applied only to the latch-mortise; but it may also, if desired, be applied to the bolt-mortise 8.

I claim as my invention- The improved sheet-metal latch-case herein shown and described, the edge forming the face-plate of which is composed of flanges projecting from the confronting inner faces of the two side plates 5 and 6, the major portion of the abutting edges of said flanges meeting each other in a plane that passes through the latch-mortise between its vertical edges, and the remainder of said abutting edges being offset above and below said latchmortise, as at 10 10, and meeting between said offsets and latch-mortise on the plane that extends along one of the vertical edges of said mortise, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
