Description
A. TAPLIN.
- Lamp Burner.
Patented March 1,1864;-
M PETERS Phowuxnumphu. Walhimzlom D41;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEO ALBERT TAPLIN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 41,794, dated March 1, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT TAPLIN, of Providence, in the county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and correct description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, said drawings forming part of this specification.
The same letters denote similar parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 shows a burner and lamp-top with the improvement. Fig. 2 is the same with the several parts separated. Fig. 3 shows the three parts of the connections on a larger scale.
My improvement consists in a new and better way of making the connection between the two parts of the collar that is put between the burner A, or wick-holder, and the top of the lamp, and also between the burner and the chimney-holder, in place of the hinge describedin my patents and others as being used for that purpose.
The construction is as follows: A part of the metal of which is formed one part of the collar 0 or burner A is carried out in the shape of a flange, S, and turned up over at the outer edge, (see 0, Fig. 3,) and a slot, D, is made in it. A portion of the metal of the other part of the collar 0 or of the chimney holder B is carried out in like manner, so as to form a flange, L, in which a slot, H, is made to correspond with the slot in the other flange, but the edge is left straight and fits into the turn in the other flange, b. A stiff piece of metal, F, is inserted into the two slots in the flanges, and is fastened at the lower end to that part of the collar or burner, (when it is not made of the same piece of metal with them,) and the upper part is bent into the proper shape to support the upper part of the collar 0 or chimney-holder B when open. This makes a very strong and durable support for the upper parts when open, and has another great advantage over the common devices for that purpose in being easier and cheaper to make.
1 have spoken of the flanges L S as being made of the same pieces of metal with the parts to which they belong, which way of making them I prefer; but they may be made separate, and fastened on in any of the usual ways.
What I claim as my invention is- The construction of the connections substantially as herein set forth, and for the purpose specified.
ALBERT TAPLIN.
