Description

(No Model.)
0. A. J APHET. WASHING MACHINE.
No. 414,710. Patented Nov. 12, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()EFICE.
CHARLES A. .TAPIIET, OF WINCHESTER, KANSAS.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,710, dated November 12, 1889. Application filed September 28, 1888- Serial No. 286,690. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, CHARLES A. .IAPHET, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vinchester, in the county of Jeiferson and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in ashing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cylinder washing-machines; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view a washing-machine constructed in accordance with my invention, the lid of the boiler being removed. Fig. 2 is a central transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line .70 so of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view representing the attachment of the braces and ribs. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing how the U shaped buckets are formed.
Referring to the drawings byletter, A designates the wash-boiler, of the ordinary or any preferred construction.
13 designates the cylinder, constructed of two portions hinged together and provided with a spring-latch D, as shown. The cylinder is also provided with the trunnions E, which rest in notches in the upper edges of the boiler and rotate therein in the operation of the device. The cylinder is provided around its periphery with the U-shaped buckets F, which have the perforations G in their curved portions, as shown. The periphery of the cylinder between the buckets is provided with the perforations H, and between the rows of the perforations H, on the inner surface of the cylinder, I provide transverse ribs I, having the T-heads J at their inner edges, as shown. In order to prevent buckling of the inner surface of the cylinder, I provide the beveled braces K, which have their ends secured to the cylinder and their central portions secured to the T-heads J of the ribs 1.
In operation the clothes are placed in the cylinder and the cylinder is placed in the boiler, as will be readily understood. The boiler is partially filled with Water and the cylinder is then rotated, carrying the clothes through the water and cleansing the same. As the cylinder rotates the steam and hot water will pass through the perforations in the periphery onto the clothes, so as to thoroughly remove the dirt thereon. The U -shaped buckets, also, will gather up the water and carry it around to the highest point of the cylinder, where it will be discharged through the perforations in the buckets onto the clothes, thereby aiding and quickening the operation of washing. The transverse ribs I will catch up a part of the water -passing through the perforations H and discharge it onto the clothes in a similar manner, while.
the braces K, besides strengthening the cylinder, will prevent the clothes falling against the periphery of the cylinder and closing the perforations H to prevent access of the wat or to the interior of the cylinder.
The braces K at the bottom of the cylinder are V-shaped in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 4. By this means additional strength is given to these braces. The braces K at the top of the cylinder are plain.
By reference to Fig. 5 will be seen the method employed in securing the U-shaped buckets in place. Portions of the periphery of the cylinder are cut out of a width equal to the width of the buckets, and then the side edges of the buckets are secured to the side edges of the openings cut in the cylinder. The ends of the buckets are soldered to the inner sides of the cylinder.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The improved washing-machine cylinder, having openings in its periphery and the edges bent upon themselves and forming grooves, the U shaped buckets provided with lateral flanges secured in said grooves, the transverse T-shaped ribs, and the longitudinal braces having their ends secured at the junction of the buckets and the cylinders and secured intermediate of their ends to the ribs, substantially as described.
In testimony that I laim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. JAPHET.
