UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. MATTHEIVS, OF BUFFALO, NElV YORK.
COMBINED MEMORANDUM-BOOK, CALENDAR, aw.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,363, dated July 23, 1889.
Application filed June 12, 1888. Serial No. 276,357. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. MATTHEWS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Butfalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Memorandum- Book, Diary, Calendar, and Advertising Medium, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in memorandum-books, in which a diary, calendar, portable memorandum, and advertising medium are combined in one, all of which will be fully and clearly hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the book open and the means for securing it against the wall or to some portion of a desk. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation showing the book closed and secured by the suspendingcord. Fig. 3 is a back view, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation.
This little book is adapted to be used either in the pocketas a diary and reminder or hung up against the wall or at some convenient point on the desk as a calendar.
In said drawings the book is represented as composed of a series of sheets'put together by staples 1 in the usual way. The cover 2 is made, preferably, of heavier materialcard-board, for instance-and is provided with two holes 3 and 4, strengthened by the ordinary metal eyelets 5. Through these holes is passed and secured an endless cord 6, which surrounds the book, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and is made just long enough to allow it to be suspended by tacks or pins 7 to the wall or desk when opened, as shown in Fig. 1, and to be wound twice around the book when closed and drawn obliquely taut, as shown in Fig. 2.
days fromthe beginning of the year, substan-- tially as shown in said Fig. 1.
At the head of the opposite leaf of the book is printed the months, the number of days in the month, and the year. Below this are blank memorandum-spaces r for every day in the week, so that the reverse sides of opposite leaves are always in View.
To use the book as a calendar, drive two tacks 7 into the wall or at some convenient point on the desk, being the distance of the two daggers 9 on the margin of the sheet. (See Fig. 1.) Let the tacks 7 project a little. Then open the book to the current week, and, holding it open, loop the cord 6 around the two tacks 7, as shown in 1.
It is easily removed when it becomes necessary to make a note of an engagement or other memorandum or to change the-week of the calendar.
I claim as my invention As a new article of manufacture, a memorandum-book, calendar, or the like having its covers provided with openings at the upper parts of their front edges and provided with a continuous cord passed through said openings, said cord being of such length as to pass in doubled form around the book and to retain the same in open suspended condition, as described.
GEO. E. MATTHEWS.
