CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,572, dated May '7, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LALBERT G. DEsIIAZo, a citizen of the United States, residing 'at Cypress Ridge, in the county of Monroe and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.
My invention relates lto improvements in car-couplings, the object of which is to provide a cheap, simple, and durable device for coupling and uncoupling cars. These objects I attain by means' of the device'illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in which- Figure lis a view in elevation of the entire device. Fig. 2 is a View of one of the couplers detached. Fig. 3 is a View of the opening roller.

A is a draW-head or bumper of any desired size and shape, to which the coupling device is attached, either above or below, in any desired way, so as to revolve and present either end or either side forward. For this purpose the coupling B has a hole, b, provided with a king-bolt, b2, which enters the dra-whead of the car. Said coupling B Vis thus permitted to revolve, and for the purpose of holding it with either end or side forward the drawhead and coupling-block B may be provided with a longitudinal and cross tongue, b3, and. groove b4 or any other suitable device for holding it in the desired positions for coupling by presenting the proper end, or by preventinga coupling by presenting one of the sides, so that cars may be pushed in switching without coupling.
One end of the coupling is provided with a spear head, C, for. entering the couplingblock Aof the other car. The other end is provided with a trap, D, formed by the upper and lower plates, d cl2, and the movable side jaws, d3. Said movable jaws are hinged by bolts d4 near the end of the coupling, and are provided with projections d5, at the inner ends, which extend up through slots b5 in the coupling-block. i
E are springs for holding the inner ends of the jaws together. For this purpose they are bolted at one end, e, to the coupling-block i'n any suitable Way, while the other end, e2, is free and rests against the outside of the inner ends of the jaws cl3 for holding them together and causing them to catch the spearhead of the coupling-block of the other car automatically when the cars are shoved together, and thus couple the cars. l
F is a roller, forming cams or inclined edges f2, against which the projections d5 of the jaws rest, so that the jaws Inay be. opened and the cars uncoupled by turning the roller F. Y For this purpose said roller may be providedwith a lever or crank, f, or other suitable device for turning the same.
Thus I have a device either end of which may be presented for the purpose of automatically coupling cars together, and the side of which may beV presented for the purpose of preventing a coupling when desired The leveror projection f7 is formed to enter a slot, all, in the plate d, so as to rest by the side of the neck C2 of the spear-head C, so that as the head is drawn out its shoulder G3 strikes the said projection f7'and throws it back up, and thus causes the jaws to close as the spear-head comes out. rlhe cranks f are placed on each end of the roller F, so that the cars "may be uncoupled from either side of the car, and for this purpose the said roller .has suitable bearings, f6 f6, on the plate d.
Y Said coupling may be placed on the under side of the draw-head by properly arranging the same with reference to the draw-head.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a car-coupler, the combination, with the draw-head B, having a transverse slot in its upper face, of the cam d5, working in said slot, the arm f7, secured rigidly .to the camsupporting bar and working in a longitudinal opening in the draw-head, the jaws d3, located in the draw-head, and springs E2, for forcing the jaws in, substantially as described.
