SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,031, dated April 23, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.: v Be it known that I, JESSE I-IECHLEE MoYEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Temple, in the county of Bell and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scarf-Protectors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and t'o the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.

My invention relates to limprovements in scarf-protectors, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

The primary object of my invention is to upper exposed edge of a neck tie or scarf from wear, which can be adjusted or extended to accommodate itself to ties or scarfs of different widths, and, further, to provide said protector with novel means for attaching it to the scarf or tie in such a manner that said securing devices are concealed from view.

With these ends in view the first part of my invention consists of an extensible protector, U shaped in cross-section, to fit closely over the upper edge of the scarf and consisting of two members or sections, which are connected at the rear thereof by a pin-andslot connection to adapt them to be extended longitudinally with respect to each other, whereby the protector can be adjusted to scarfs of different widths.

My invention further contemplates a scarfprotector consisting of a central member, substantially U-shaped in cross-section, and two extensible members fitted within the central member at the ends thereof and connected thereto by a pin-and-slot connection. This central member is further provided with a transverse recess in its rear arm to adapt a collar-button to enter said recess and permit the scarf to be adjusted close to the collar and shirt of the wearer.

My invention further consists of a scarfprotector having two extensible members connected to each other, and fastening-hooksper-` man ently connected to one of the members at the rear side thereof, and adapted to take into the scarf to detachably hold the protector over the edge of the scarf.

To enable others to understand my invention, I will now proceed to describe the same in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view showing my improved protector applied to the upper exposed edge of a scarf or tie. Fig. 2 is an en larged detached perspective of my device. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view on the line a; of Fig. 4, and Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line y 'y of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing a scarf-protector consisting of two extensible members.

tIn the embodiment of my invention illus` trated in the accompanying drawings, l designates the protector, which is made of sheet metal and bent longitudinally upon itself to provide a plate which is U-shaped in crosssection-to adapt it to be fitted over the upper exposed edge of the scarf or tie to which the protector is to be applied, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings. This U-shaped main plate of my improved scarf -protector is curved slightly throughout its length to cause it to conform closely to the curvature of the scarf and to fit tightly thereon, and thus impart a neat appearance thereto. t

To adapt the protector to accommodate 1tself to scarfs or ties of different widths, l have provided it with one or more extensible members, 2, and in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, I have illustrated a protector consisting of three members, while in Fig. 5 the protector 1s composed of two members. The members are constructed and arranged relatively to each other in substantially the same manner whether the protector is made of two members or of three members; but to adapt the device for use on scarfs of any width I prefer to provide it with an extensible-member at both ends of a central member, as shown in Figs. l and S, although a protector consisting of two. members only, as shown in Fig. 5, may be well adapted to serve all practical purposes when the parts are properlyproportioned.

Referring more particularly to Figs. l to 3, inclusive, these extensible members are arranged at opposite ends of the main central plate, 1, and are likewise U-shaped in crosssection, to coliform to the shape of said central plate or member. These extensible members of the protector are arranged within the ends of the main central member, so that one or both of the extensible members can be withdrawn within the central member and thereby concealed from View.

In order to prevent accidental separation and displacement of the extensible members of the protector from the central member thereof, and at the same time permit said members to slide lengthwise, the several m embers are connected by a pin-and-slot connection, which, preferably, consists of a longitudinal slot, 5, formed in the rear arm, 4, of the U -shaped central member, l, and a headed pin or stud, 6, permanently fixed to the sliding or extensible member 2, and working in said slot 5, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 4.

The rear arm, 4, of the central U-shaped member or plate, l, is provided with a transverse recess, 7, which extendsl from the lower edge nearly to the top of said arm, and it is of sufficient size to permit the head of a collar-button to lit therein, said recess being formed at or near the middle of said member I between the extensible members 2.

In Fig. 5 the two members comprising my scarf-protector are designated by the numerals l and 2, and they are arranged relatively to each other and connected together in the same manner as the members of the threepart protector hereinbefore described. I do not, therefore, deem it necessary to describe this device in detail, as its construction is obvious from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings.

Fastening hooks or claws 8 9 are' permanently connected to the rear arm, 4, of the main central member, l, of my protector, and at points on opposite sides of the central transverse recess, 7, therein, and the free lower ends of the hooks are adapted to be inserted and fastened into the rear side of the neck tie or scarf after the protector has been adjusted over the upper exposed edge thereof, to prevent accidental displacement or disengagement of said protector.

It will be Observed that the fastening devices for preventing displacement of the protector, and the pin-and-slot connection between the main and extensible members are located at the rear of the protector, so that when it is adjusted in place on the upper exposed edge of the scarf said fastening and connecting devices are entirely concealed from View.

The front arm, 3, of the U-shaped members of the protector may be ornamented in any desirable manner to give the device a neat and attractive appearance when adjusted to the scarf or other articles of neck-wear.

The manner of using or adjusting my improved protector and the advantages thereof are obvious from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings. When the device is to be applied to a scarf of greater width than the length of the central member, l, the members are first adjusted over the upper edge of the scarf exposed to wear, with one end of the main central member close against the end of the neckband, which 1s permanently connected to the scarf or tie, and the extensible member at the opposite end of the main central member is extended or projected beyond the end of said central member until its free end reaches the point where the free end of the neckband is inserted in the usual slot provided for its reception in the imitation bow or knot of the neckscarf. Should the combined length of the central member and one of the end members be unequal to the width of the neck tie or scarf, the other extensible member of the protector is adjusted beyond the central member, 1, thereof, in the same manner as the member first adjusted, but in the opposite direction, until the combined' length of the three members is equal to the width of the scarf. After the members of the protector have been properly adjusted and fitted to the scarf, it is pressed closely and firmly over the upper edge thereof, and the fastening hooks or claws 8 9 thereof are inserted into the rear side of the scarf to prevent the displacement of the protector.

It will be observed that I have provided an improved protector which can be readily and quickly adjusted to scarfs or ties of diferent widths, is iirmly and securely held in position, presents a neat and ornamental appearance when adjusted for use, and is cheap and inexpensive of manufacture.

I would have it understood that I do not coniine myself to the exact details of construction and form and proportion of parts herein shown and described as an embodiment of my invention, as I am aware that changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. Ascarf-protector consisting of two m embers U -shaped in cross-section, fitted one within the other and having a pin-and-slot connection at the rear thereof, as and for the purpose described.

2. As a new article of manufacture, ascarfprotector consisting of a central member substantially U-shaped in cross-section, and two extensible members fitted within the central member at the ends thereof and connected thereto by a pin-and-slot connection, substantially as described.
