UNITED STATES PATENT EFICE.
JAMES R. RYAN, OF SAULT STE. MARIE, MICHIGAN.
SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,305, dated April 9, 1889.
Application filed August 2, 1888. Serial No. 281,806. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES R. RYAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sault Ste. Marie, in the county of Chippewa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Hoops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlugs.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in snap-hooks; and the invention consists in a new article of manufacture made of one single piece of wire, all as more fully hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of my improved snap-hook.
A single piece of spring-wire of suitable length is doubled up in its middle upon itself, and the rounding-point a thus forms theend of the nose of the hook A. A portion, B, of the wire thus doubled up forms the shank of the hook. The loop 0 is formed at the end of the shank by separating the wires and bending them in opposite directions, as shown. Small coils l) are then formed at each end of the loop, and the free ends of the wires are brought forward and soldered together at b, above the nose of the hook, to form a mousing or spring-latch E for the hook, as shown. It is obvious that with the aid of suitable formers a spring-latch of this-description may be formed very quickly and cheaply and prove a serviceable article of manufacture, and less liable to be broken or become inoperative than many more expensive devices now in the market, the multiplicity of parts of which renders them liable to become inoperative, while with my construction, there being but one single piece in its whole construction, nothing can become separated or lost.
The whole device has a graceful appearance, and if made of polished or plated wire can be made very ornamental, and the loop is strengthened by its being secured in the ordinary manner to the end of the strap.
W'hat I claim as my invention is- As an improved article of manufacture, a snap-hook consisting of a single piece of wire to form the hook A, shank B, loop 0, coils D D, and latch E, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 21st day of July, 1888.
JAMES R. RYAN. \Vitnesses JOHN SCHUMAN, P. M. HULBERT.
