TRUSSED SUSPENSION=BRIDGE SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,105, dated March 5, 1889.. Application filed November 22, 1888. seen No. 291,580. (No model.)
To (1.72 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. \YIL'DIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Melvern, in the county of Osage and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trussed Suspension-Bridges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement inv i vided with longitudinal arms R, arranged at trussed suspcnsion-bridges; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a bridge embodying my improvemcuts. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same. perspective views. of a portion oi? a bridge. plan view of the same. perspective view.
A represents the chords or stringers, which are slightly arched, as shown, and are supported on the piers P, the outer ends of said chords or stringers projecting beyond the piers for a suitable distance and resting on the banks or approaches.
C represents the posts, which are arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the bridge, have their lower ends passed between the stringers or chords and supported by the piers, and have their upper ends covered by caps or saddles D, which have pairs of ears or flanges E on their upper sides, and are connected together by cross-bars F. The pairs of posts 0 are braced laterally by arched bars G, which have their centers bolted under the centers of the bars F, and have their ends bolted to the inner sides of the posts 0.
The cables H are supported by the posts C, bear upon the saddle-plates D and between the ears or flanges E, and have their ends secured at suitable distances beyond the piers in the banks of the stream or chasm by suitable anchoring devices, I. The chords or stringers are supported by tie-rods K, which Fig. 5 is a top plan view Fig. ti is a bottom Fig. 7 is a detail depend from the cable, and the said tie-rods are inverted-U shaped, have the arched central portions passed over the plates or castings L, supported on the cables and provided on opposite sides with ears M, having open- 3 lugs, through which the arms of the tie-rods extend. The lower ends of the said arms are arranged on opposite sides of the pairs of chords or stringers, and passed through the Figs. 3 and a are detail laterallyextending arms N of plates or castlugs 0, and provided with nuts P. The said 1 plates or castings O are arranged transversely under the chords or stringers, and are proright angles to the arm N, said arms R being under the spaces which separate the pairs of chords or stringers. The plates or castings L are provided on opposite sides at diagonallyopposite corners with ears S.

Y represents a series oi? truss-rods, which are substantially \l-shaped, have their lower portions extending under the plates or castings N and passed through openings in the l arms R, and have their upper ends passed through opcniu gs iu the ears S and provided with nuts V. The said truss-rods cross each other, as shown in Fig. l, midwaybetween the tie-rods, and thus serve to distribute the floor, and are secured to the tie-rods by means of clip-bolts Y. The function of the said hubboards is to prevent the hubs or vehicles from striking the tie and truss rods when passing over the bridge, the said hub-boards also serv-- ing the purpose of a hand-rail, and rendering the bridge safe for pedestrians.
Having thus described my invention, I clai1n- 1. The combination, in a suspension-bridge,
of the cables, the chords or stringers, the plates or castings on the cables and under the stringers, the vertical tie-rods connecting the plates or castings, and the truss-rods, also secured to and connecting the said plates, the said truss-rods being crossed in the spaces between the tie-rods, substantially as described.
2. The plates or castings L, having the concaved grooves on their lower sides to adapt them to fit on the cables and having the ears M and the ears S, in combination with the tie-rods secured to the ears M, and the trussrods secured to the ears S, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the stringers or chords arranged in pairs and apart from each other, the plates or castings 0, arranged under the stringers and having the transverse arms N and the longitudinal arms R, the tierods secured to the arms N, and the trussrods secured to the arms R, substantially as described.
4. The combination, in a suspension-bridge, of the cables, the chords or stringers, the tierods depending from the cables and supporting the chords, the truss-rods also connecting the cable and chords, the deck-beams arranged on the chords or stringers, the floorboards supported 011 the deck-beams, and the hub-boards X, secured to the tie-rods, substantially as described.
5'. In a bridge, the piers l), the chords or stringers A, slightly arched and supported by the piers, the ends of the chords or stringers projecting beyond the piers for a suitable distance and resting on the banks or approaches, the posts 0, arranged in pairs on, opposite sides of the bridge, and having their lower endspassed between the stringers or chords and, supported by the piers, the saddles or caps D at the upper ends of; the posts- C, and the cables H, supported by the posts 0 by bearing on the saddles D, and having their ends secured at a suitable distance beyond the piers of thestream by suitable anchoring devices, as set forth.
6. The posts C, arranged in pairs 011 opposite sides of the bridge, and having the caps or saddles D provided with ears or flanges E, the said caps or saddles being connected by the cross-bar F, combined with the cables H, supported by the posts 0, bearing upon the saddle-plates D'between the flanges thereof, and having their ends secured at a suitable distance beyond the piers by suitable anchoring devices, I, as set forth.
7. In a suspension-bridge, the cables, the plates or castings L on the cables, the V- shaped truss-rods. V, having their upper ends connected to the plates or castings L, the chords or stringers A, and the plates or castings 0 below the chords or stringers and connected to the truss-rods V, as set forth.
8. In a suspension-bridge, the chords or stringers A, the cables H, the V- shaped trussrods V, depending from the cables and passing under the chords or stringers, and the tierods K, also depending from the cables, having the shape of an inverted U, and passing down and connected to the chords or stringers, and the truss-rods V, crossing each other midway between the tie-rods K, as set forth.
9. In a suspension-bridge, the cables H, the chords or stringers A, and the truss-rods V, having the shape of the letter V, the central portion of the truss-rods passing under the chords or stringers, and the upper ends being secured to the cables, the said truss-rods cross-ing each other, as set forth.
10. In a suspension-bridge, the cables H, the chords or stringers A, the plates L on the cables, the plates 0 belowthe chords or stringers, and the V- shaped truss-rods V, having their central portions passed through the plates 0, to hold the same against the chords or stringers, and their upper ends connected to alternate plates L, the said truss-rods crossing each other, as set forth.
