VUNITED i STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK SGIIILZ, OF MIIVAUKEE, VISGONSIN.
MATCH-PACKAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,756, dated February 12, 1889.
Application filed August 23, 1888. Serial No. 283,589. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may conoci-711.-
Be it known that I, FRANK SCHILZ, of Mil- 'waukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Packages, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved match-package in which a number ot matches can be carried conveniently with safety, and which is so constructed that the matches are automaticallyignited by withdrawing them from the package.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side View of my improved match-package,v
parts being broken out. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line a; ce, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line {1/ y, Fig. l.
' Similar letters of rc'l'erence indicate corresponding parts.
The package A, which is made Hat and ol' paper, is closed at the top and bottom, and is provided with a longitudinal partition, B, of pasteboard or wood, extending from the closed bottom to within a short distance of the top. The sides ot said partition are beveled slightly toward each other at the lower end for the purpose of aftording greater space in the lower part of the package for the heads of the matches I). The sides of said partition are coated at, the upper end with sand, emery, or roughened in any other suitable manner, so that when the matches are drawn out their heads are rubbed on said surface, and the matches thus automatically ignited.
The package is provided a short distance from the upper end and in line with the upper edge of the partition B with a line, H, of perforations extending entirely around it, so as to permit ot' tearing o the upper end, G,
from the packageA rlhe matches can then be seized and drawn out.
The package occupies very little space, as it is made flat, and can be conveniently carried in the vest-pocket with safety, as there is no danger of the matches igniting except by being drawn out of the package.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to provide a package with a row o i apertures to facilitate tearing; and I am also aware that it is not broad-ly new to pack matches in a package at two sides` ot a partition in said package, and I do not claim these, broadly, as my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A match-package composed ot' a Hat paper casing provided with a longitudinal partition extending from one end to within a short distance of the other end, said partition having its faces roughened at the upper end of. the package and its faces inclined toward each other at the lower end of the package, the casing havin a line ot' perforations extending around it at the top edge of the partition and matches placed between the sides of the partition and the sides ot' the package, the heads of the matches being at the beveled end of the partition, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of subscribing witnesses.
FRANK SCHILZ.
