IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINERY FOR DRESSING HEADING FOR COOPER WARE.

Specification forming part of. Letters Patent No. 39,268, dated July 21, 1863.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDMUND GREENLEE, of the township of Summerhille, county of Crawford, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Invention or Improvement in Machinery forDressing Heading for Cooper Ware; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference beinghad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in` which- Figure l is a side view. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of E F G and a top or vertical view of the bedplate H on which they stand.

Like letters refer to like parts in the different views.

A represents a large faceplate or wheel revolving on its axis C B, the wooden frame of the machine; D, the pillow-blocks .on which the shaft C is supported; E, clamp or device for holding the heading while being dressed F, a rest or support against which the edge ot' the heading rests while being dressed; G, a rest to supportthe heading while beingjointed on the edge; H,bedplate on which E F Gr are fixed. lis a pulley by which motion and power is given to the face-plate or wheel A. ll is a loose pulley, to which the driving-belt may be shifted when the operator wishes to stop the operation of the machine. a is a lever by which the heading is adjusted nearer to or farther from the face-plate or wheel A; j', a

wheel A for dressing the sides of the heading; i, knives for pointing the edges of the heading; j, spiral spring to elevate the dog f when it is desired to detach the dog` from the end of the heading.

The manner o f operating the machine is as follows: After the machine is set in motion, the heading is pnt, one piece at a time, between the clamping device E and faceplate or wheel A, and by the operation or action of the lew'cr d upon the dog fit is made fast, and by the action ofthe lever a the heading is moved up to the face-plate or wheel A, and is planed or dressed off by the knives or revolving cutters k in the face-plate or wheel A. The heading is then taken out of the clamp and the sides reversed, and the clamp and the heading are then moved up to the face plate or wheel A, and the dressing continues until the set-screw b comes in contact with the bed-plate H,which stops the dressing and leaves the heading a desired thickness, which may be greater or less, according to the position of the screw b. To joint the edges of the heading the pieces are taken, one at a time, after they are dressed to a desired thickness, and the side placed against the rest G,with the edge toward the face-plate or wheel A, then by the hands ot' the operator brought in contact with the knives i and held in that position until the knives have made the edge straight.

What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The device for clamping and holding the toothed dog fastened in the end of the sliding bar g, which dog is drawn down in contact with the end-of the heading by the action of the lever cl. c is a strap or fulcruin of lever a; b, setscrew by which the thickness of the heading is gaged; g, point at which heading while being dressed, when used in connection with the face-plate or wheel, as above specified.
