Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. SAYRE, OF PISGAH, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRADING AND DRESSING ROADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,829, dated March 3, 1863.
To all whom it may concer-7L:
Be it known that l, GEORGE W. SAYRE, of Pisgah, Butler county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful machine for grading and dressing roads and for ditching fields and farm-lands, ornamental grounds, Sto., and I do Iereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part ot' this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view or side elevation; Fig. 2, the plan view.
A A is an angular scraper; B B, upright pieces; C, long beam extending from back end of scraper 5 D, short beam at forward end ot' said scraper, joining at nearly right angles at H, fastened and joined at king-bolt of wagon; E, brace at the back end ot' scraper and extending to opposite side, being attached by a pivot or hinge to the back part of wagon-axle I; F, block bolted to hounds of wagon for lever G to rest upon to raise scraper as occasion may require; H, block for lever G to raise the hind part of scraper when oecasion may require; L L', stays for end of levers G G when occasion may require.
My combined ditch-plow consists of an upright piece M and beam N N with handles forming ajoint where they join the beam, so that they wili not be liable to bind or cramp When working at different or desired depths. The shear 0 consists of a plate of steel or iron running from beam down the sheath or upright piece M to the desired depth of ditch, and also a wing to move the dirt from the edge of ditch, so that the large scraper will carry the same to any desired distance, the ditch-plow being attached, with road gra-der or scraper to any farm-wagon at the axle or hounds-whichever is most convenient-at the forward end, or to the king-bolt.
For the purpose of grading roads and dressing the same, or for dressing ornamental grounds, the ditch-plow P is removed from the machine, leaving the scraper attached, as described, to the common farm-wagon. 1n ditching, two men will be required; in grading and dressing roads, &c., it may be optional.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot the United States, is
1. The combination of scraper A with beam t), angle-brace d, hinged brace E, and levers G G.
2. The plow P, in combination with scraper A, when constructed as for the described purposes.
3. rEhe above-described machine, when combined, arranged, and constructed as and for the purposes set forth.
GEORGE W. SAYRE.
