MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,
PLAGE. y
To CAPITOLA PILLSBURY BnoigvvirH, on SAMnf PAcKiN-G-CASE FAST'ENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent'No. 377,477, dated February 7, 1888.
v Application filed March 25, 1887. Serial No. 232,357. (No model.)
and useful Improvement in Packing-Oase Fastenings, which will, in connection with the accompanying drawings, be hereinafter fully described, andy specifically -detned in the appended claims.
In said drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing my invention as applied to a packing-case, which latter is shown in part.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line X X, Fig. 1,
but showing in perspective the locking-stud, which in Fig. l is omitted. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clamping-strap as secured to the packing-case. Fig. 4 is ahorizontal section taken as on line WV W, Fig. 2.
, My invention relates to a devicefor securzo/ing in place the covers of packing cases or boxes which are formedwith parallel opposite sides or faces andvright-angle corners; and it consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed ont'in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the end ofthe packingy case or box, B the cover, and C a cleat vsecured to the upper part of end A, both ends of the case being alike, and the height, length, and breadth thereof of any desired dimension. To the vend of the case s ecure a strap, D, having a lower member, a,
secured to end A by the studs g, formedupon strap D, and a screw or nail, e,- the oblique angle 1), bearing against the lower edge of cleat C; the part c, resting against the outer face of the cleat; angle d, extending across lthe top edge of the cleat and end, and a lip, f, flush with the inner face of end A and serving to secure the end and cleat together. In thehori- 4o zontal part d of said strap is formed an elongated opening, h, as is clearly shown in Fig.. 3. Upon the cover or top Bis secured the metallic capplate E by screws m, said plate being formed with a depression, ji, inthe floor of which is cut an opening,j, f key-hole7 form, while at the front thereof` is a depression, 7c, and transversely thereto, on both sides of openingj, is a depression, Z,Fig. 1.
A lockingstnd, F, is formed with a cylina similar head, t, the longer line of which is at right angles 'to the longer line of head s.- Said head t of locking -stud F and hole j in cap-plate E have such relation to each other Vin Size andy form that by arranging bodyy q `obliqnely to the plane of cap-plate Ethe' head t may, by entering one of its ends first f y in the hole, be passed therethrough, and thereafter the locking-stud remains permanently'in' y capplate E, whether top Bis secured to the 6ol case or is removed therefrom. Said Yhead t, when duly arranged, passes freely through hole h in strap D; and to secure the cover in place the locking-stud is so arranged that head s rests in depression k, when head twill' read- 65 y ily pass through hole h in strap D, as stated,
when, by turning the locking-stud. a quarter of a' circle, so as to bring the head s to bear in depressions Z, the coverwill be securely l locked to the case and/the locking-stud be se` 7o cured against accidental rotation, as head s is below. the level of thecap-plate,"the angle'o'r part d of the strap being formed slightlyr obl lique to part c, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. Y2, so that when t hef, lockingstndisyduly 75 1 lockedsaid part d, by its tendency to rise, will hold the lockingstud closely in place. ySaid cap-plate E is formed with lugs n n, which embrace the edges of strap D to prevent lateral displacement of the cover, while a lug, p, 8o`
secures the cover from end displacement.
,I claim as myinventionl `l. The combination ofrstrap D, cap-plate E, and locking-stud F, said strap adapted to be secured kto the vertical `wall of the case and t0, 5.53. Overlap the upper edge thereof andprovided with an opening, h, to receive the lower head j of the locking-stud, the cap-plate being se.- cured to the coverl and having an opening, j,L to receive said locking-stud, the latter being r9o formed with two heads, each at rightangles to the'planeof its body q,substantially as speci. lied. I Y.
2.l The combination,-with strap D4 and lockf ing-stndF, formed as specified, of cap-plate .95.
E, formed With arecess, i, to receive onev of the heads of said locking-stud, and openings j, through Which the locking-stud may be indrical body, q, a barlike upper head',:`s,and 5oA the floor of said ecess; to receive head s of said locking-stud, substantially as specified.
