UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIDNEY E. SMITH, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
i GRATER-CYLINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,130, dated August 30, 1887. Application filed June 23, 1887. Serial No. 242.114. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIDNEY E. SMITH, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grater-Cylinders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a grater designed for grating cocoanut, vegetables, and other substances; and the invention consists in forming' the cylinder with numerous passages, in which areinserted short plates of metal to form the teeth, the said'short plates being of less thickness than the diameters of the passages in which they are driven.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in'which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a broken end elevation of a grater the cylinder of which is constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, and Fig.
3 is an enlarged sectional elevation of the cylinder.
The frame A, box B, hopper C, shaft D, and driving-gears E for the grating-cylinder F may be of the usual or of any approved construction. The cylinder F is by preference made slightly tapering, and is made of cast-iron,with many circular passages, b I), through it. It is open at one end and closed at the other by a diaphragm,G, which is formed with an open collar, H, for securing the cylinder upon the shaft D. In each of the passages b is driven a short plate, 0, of steel, which plates project a short distance from the outer surface of the cylinder and form the teeth of the grater. The plates 0 are slightly tapering, so that when driven into the passages 12 they will be firmly held therein, and they are of less thickness than the diameters of the passages b, so that free openings 2' will be left at each side for the material grated to pass through to the interior of the cylinder.
By constructing the grating-cylinder in the manner described it is very cheap and very practical, and the teeth are very effective, and, being of steel, are very durable, and when worn out can be replaced with new teeth at very small expense.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The cylinder A, formed with a series of circular passages, b b, in combination with the short plates 0, driven into said passages, the said plates being of less thickness than the diameter of the passages to form the side openings, '13, substantially as described.
