PICTURE-FRAME.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,245, dated August 16, 1887.

Application filed October 28, 1886. Serial No. 217,467. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that 1, WILLIAM SOHUMAOHER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Molding or Picture-Frame, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention consists of an ornamental molding or picture-frame, of wood, faced'or ornamented with silk or other fabric, mounted upon a plastic backing, and embossed and applied to the molding as a separate ornamental strip, as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a piece of molding or frame ornamented in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation of the-same.

A represents a section of a molding or picture-frame, of wood, having applied to it an ornamental surface, B, of fabric, embossed with raised and depressed ornamental figures of any desired design. The fabric B has a backing, O, of any suitable material, and it is by preference fitted in a recess, a, made in the face of the molding or frame A, the molding or frame being formed at each side of the re cess with a bead, Z), to protect the edges of the embossed fabric, as will be understood from Fig. 2.

In embossing the fabric I take the backing 0, preferably of paper, and coat one,surface with glue or other adhesive material, and place upon the coated surface a strip of silk, satin, or other fabric of the desired color, and then place thewhole in an embossing-die and subject it to a heavy pressure, which not only causes it to take the form of the die, but causes the outer surface of fabric to adhere to every part of the backing, so that the fabric presents the appearance of and retains the configuration of the embossing-die.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The molding or frame A, formed with a re cess, a, and beads b at the edges of the recess, in combination with an ornamental facingstrip composed of fabric and a plastic backing embossed with figures and secured in the recess a as a separate and independent facing, substantially as described.
