UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAUREN M. FITCH, OF ROME, NE\V YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MOSES M. DAVIS, OF SAME PLACE.
FOLDING CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,749, dated August 2, 1887.
Application filed January 14, 1887. Serial No. 324.351. (No model.)
To (LZZ 1071,0172 it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, LAUREN M. FITCH, of Home, in the county of Oneida, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs, "of which the following, taken-in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the class of chairs which have their component members pivoted to each other in such a manner as to allow the chair to be folded compactly within one uniform plane; and the invention consists in an improved construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described, and specifieallyset forth in the claim.
In the annexed drawings, Figure I is aperspcetive view of my improved folding chair in position for use. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same in its folded condition. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line m :0, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detached side view of the combined front leg and side rail of the back, and Fig. 5 is a detached plan view of the seat or seat-frame.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
Z Z and I) b represent, respectively, the front and rear legs of the chair. \Vhen the chair is in position for use, the front legs, Z Z, are inclined rearward with their upper ends, and the rear legs, I) b, are inclined forward with their upper ends, and are pi\-'otedintermediate their lengths to the inner sides of the front legs, Z Z. Z Z represent the two side rails of the back of the chair, each of which side rails I form in one piece with the subjacent front leg, Z. The inner sides of the side rails, Z Z, 1 provide with longitudinal grooves a a, the upper por t-ion, a, of each of which I make wider than the lower portion, a, and join it therewith by abrupt offsets e in the sides of the grooves. Lengthwise in the upper and wider portions of the grooves a are fitted to slide the ends of a cross-plate, D, constituting an intermediate backsupport.
S denotes the seat or seat-frame, the front portion of the sides of which I provide with notches c c,terminating with offsets c, and at 'of the seat-frame on the back-frame of the chair.
Vhen the chair is in position for use, as represented in Fig. Iof the drawings, thelugs d (Z rest on the lower ends of the grooves a and thus support the rear portion of the seat, the frontportion of the same being supported on the upper end of the legs 6 b,and the offsets or shoulders c at the end of the notches bearing on the back edges of the upper end of the legs I) b, limits the movement of the said legs so as to prevent the front of the seat from descending below a horizontal position.
In folding the described chair into its most compact condition, the rear portion of the seat S slides upward between the side rails, Z Z, of the back, and in said movement it pushes up with it the cross-plate D, as represented in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. The rear legs, I), folding along the inner sides of the legs Z Z, brings all the members of the chair within the plane of the combined front legs, Z, and side rails, Z.
Having described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s*
The combination of the front legs, Z, and side rails, Z, of the back at each side of the chair formed in one piece, and the inner sides of said side rails having longitudinal grooves a a, the upper portion of each of which is wider than the lower portion and joined therewith by abrupt oli'sets e in the sides of the grooves, a cross-plate, D, sliding with its ends in the upper and wider grooves, a, the rear legs, I), inclined with their upper ends toward the front and pivoted intermediate their lengths to the inner sides of the legs Z Z, and the seat-frame S, provided with notches c c, terminating with offsets c c, and pivoted at said notched portions to the upper ends of the legs b b, and lugs d 11, projeeting from the sides of the seat-frame and 1 cnse, in the county of Onondagafln the State sliding in the lower and narrower portions of of New York, this 6th day ofJanuary, 1887.
7 l a gggglileoves a,substant1a1l as described and LAUREN M. FITCH [L S] In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my sezthin the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syra- \Vitnesses:
H. l DENIsoN, O. BENDIXON.
