Abstract

A lock which, in addition to the usual tumblers which are radially moved to release the lock cylinder in response to the insertion of a proper key, provides an additional cylinder lock releasable only by the tip of the key when fully inserted into the key slot of the cylinder. The bolt actuating bar which extends axially inwardly from the inner end of the key slot provides an enlarged head portion which is slidably engaged in the inner portion of the key slot, said enlarged head portion includes a pair of oppositely extending lock lugs which are normally engaged in a pair of diametrically opposed notches provided in the fixed lock barrel. Compression spring means circumposed about the bolt actuating bar holds the enlarged head portion in the key slot and the lock lugs in the notches until a proper key is fully inserted into the key slot whereupon the tip portion of the key moves the lock bar axially inwardly a distance sufficient to free the lock lugs from the notches while permitting a portion of the enlarged head portion to remain in the key slot for rotational movement with the lock cylinder.

While prior art devices have been devised which are intended to be pickproof, many and varied objections have been raised as to their reliability in accomplishing their primary function. Some are quite complex and are subject to prohibitive manufacturing costs, others incorporate delicate mechanisms and, as a lock is only as reliable as its most delicate part, become inoperative after moderate use. Special keys, which cannot be readily duplicated by conventional key duplicating machinery, are required for some locks and some are operable by other than the proper key.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention obviates the common objections to this type of lock as it is rugged and reliable, inexpensive to manufacture, adds no moving parts to a conventional lock of its type and is operable by a conventional type of key. The lock of the instant invention, in addition to incorporating radially movable tumblers to release the lock cylinder, provides a second lock means which is releasable only by the full insertion of a proper key into the key slot.
Normally a lock of the general type of this invention includes a bolt actuating bar, extending axially inwardly from the inside of the key slot, which is rotatable by the lock cylinder upon the insertion of a proper key in the slot. This invention adds a pair of opposed lock lugs to the end of the bolt actuating bar which is engaged in the inside end of the key slot and a pair of diametrically opposed notches in the fixed lock barrel which are adapted to receive the lock lugs. A compression spring is circumposed about the bolt actuating bar in a manner so as to hold the lock lugs in their respective notches until a proper key is fully inserted into the key slot whereupon the inner tip of the key engages the bolt actuating bar and moves it axially inwardly until the lock lugs are free of their mating notches, yet permitting a portion of the end of the bolt actuating bar to remain in the key slot to transmit the rotational movement of the lock cylinder to said bolt actuating bar.
No delicate, complicated or expensive elements are needed and as stated no additional moving parts are incorporated in the lock of the instant invention, only a slight amount of axial, longitudinal movement is provided for the normally rotatable bolt actuating bar.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The door lock 10 of the instant invention is illustrated mounted in a door D and includes a fixed lock barrel l2 and a lock cylinder 14 which is rotatable within a cylindrical through bore in the lock barrel when a proper key 16 is fully inserted into the key slot 18. As illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2 the lock barrel cylinder assembly is mounted in the outside portion of a through hole H and a bolt actuating bar, indicated generally at 20, extends through the inner portion of the hole I-I into engagement with a bolt mechanism which is conventional and not detailed. The bolt mechanism is carried by a housing 22, fixed in any convenient manner to the inside surface of the door, and includes a knob 24 which is rotatable from the inside only and permits actuation of the bolt to open the door without disturbing the locked condition of the lock barrel and cylinder assembly.
A saucer configurated disc 26 is provided to cover the inside of the hole H. A pair of screws, one of which is shown at 28 in FIGS. 1 and 2, pass through the disc 26 into engagement with a pair of threaded apertures 30, 30, provided in the lock barrel 12, to rigidly fix the lock barrel l2 and disc 26 in place.
A plurality of conventional tumblers 32 is provided in the lock cylinder 14, each of which is associated with a companionate spring urged follower pin 34 extending upwardly into respective bores 36 in an upward extension 38 of thefixed lock barrel 12. The inner pin 40 is a keeper pin which travels in a groove 42 to prevent in and out movement of the lock cylinder and a cover plate 44 is rigidly swaged into a groove 46 in the top of the extension 38 to retain all of the tumblers, pins and springs in their respective bores.
The lock mechanism as described is quite conventional and upon insertion of a proper key 16, the tumblers 32 are raised to place the plane of separation between all of the tumblers 32 and their respective follower pins 34 on the shear line of the lock cylinder, permitting rotational movement of the cylinder by means of the key 16.
The bolt actuating bar 20 conventionally extends into the inner portion 48 of the key slot 18 for rotational movement with the lock cylinder 14 and is normally held against axial longitudinal movement relative to said cylinder 14.
The instant invention provides an enlarged head portion 50 on the bolt actuating bar 20 which is received in the inner portion 48 of the key slot and, as illustrated, the head portion 50 flares outwardly to provide a pair of opposed lock lugs 52 and 54 which are adapted to be respectively received in a pair of notches 56 and 58 provided in the fixed lock barrel 12.
As illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2, a compression spring 60 is circumposed about the bolt actuating bar 12 and is interposed between the fixed disc 26 and the head portion 50 of the bar 12. Compression forces are thereby exerted against the head portion 50, holding the lock lugs 52 and 54in their respective notches 56 and 58 to provide a secondary locking means against rotational movement of the lock cylinder 14.
Bearing discs or cup shaped members 62 and 64 may be provided at each end of the compression spring 60. The inner member 62 is preferably nested in an aperture 66 in the fixed disc 26 said aperture also provides a passageway for the bolt actuating bar 20. The outer disc or cup shaped member 64 is seated against the enlarged head 50 of the bar 20.
With reference to FIG. 2, a proper key has been inserted in the key slot 18 and the tumblers 32 have been actuated in the conventional manner, however, in addition, the tip end 68 of the key 16 has engaged the outer end of the enlarged head portion 50 of the bolt actuating bar 20 resulting in axial inward movement of the bar 20. The amount of inward extension of the head portion 50 into the inner end portion 48 of the key slot is such that the proper key provides suflicient axial inward movement of the head portion 50 to free the lock lugs 52 and 54 from the notches 56 and 58 while permitting a portion of the head 50 to remain in the key slot 18 to receive and transmit the rotational movement of the lock cylinder to the bolt mechanism through the bar 20.
While a preferred form of the instant invention has been il lustrated and described, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the true scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In locks of the class having a lock barrel which is adapted to extend into a throughhole in a door in fixed relation therewith, a lock cylinder in the lock barrel providing a through key slot,'keeper pin, tumbler and follower pin means operable by the insertion of a proper key in the key slot to permit rotational movement of the lock cylinder within the lock barrel, the improvement comprising in combination,
A. a bolt actuating bar, extending axially inwardly from the inner end of the lock cylinder, having 1. an enlarged head portion at one end thereof, a first portion of which is sized to be slidably received in the inner end portion of the key slot,
2. lock lug means, forming a second portion of said enlarged head portion, positioned outside of the key slot and extending radially outwardly beyond the lock cylinder;
B. notch means in the fixed lock barrel sized and positioned to receive said lock lug means;
C. compression spring means to hold said lock lug means in said notch means when the proper key is not inserted in the key slot, said compression spring means being yieldable inwardly upon full insertion of a proper key, the tip portion of which engages said head portion to move said bolt actuating bar inwardly a distance sufficient to disengage said lock lug means from said notch means to permit rotational movement of the lock cylinder and said bolt actuating bar upon manipulation of the key.
2. A lock as defined in claim 1 in which said lock lug means comprises a pair of oppositely extending lock lugs.
3. A lock as defined in claim 2 in which the fixed lock cylinder provides a through bore for the reception of the lock barrel and said notch means comprises a pair of notches in the lock barrel in a diametrically opposed relationship about the inner periphery of the through bore, said pair of notches being sized and positioned to receive said pair of oppositely extending lock lugs when a proper key is not fully inserted in the key slot.
4. A lock as defined inclaim 3 including a fixed closure means for the inside end of the through hole in the door, and a hole in said closure means for passage therethrough of said bolt actuating bar.
5. A lock bar as defined in claim 4 in which said compression spring means comprises a helical compression spring under compression between said fixed closure means and said enlarged head portion.
6. A lock bar as defined in claim 5 including inner and outer seat means for said helical compression spring.
7. A lock bar as defined in claim 6 in which said inner seat means includes an annular flange portion nested in the hole in said closure means.
8. A lock bar as defined in claim 6 in which both of said inner and outer seat means comprise generally cup shaped members to prevent disalignment of said helical compression spring.

Claims (9)

1. In locks of the class having a lock barrel which is adapted to extend into a throughhole in a door in fixed relation therewith, a lock cylinder in the lock barrel providing a through key slot, keeper pin, tumbler and follower pin means operable by the insertion of a proper key in the key slot to permit rotational movement of the lock cylinder within the lock barrel, the improvement comprising in combination, A. a bolt actuating bar, extending axially inwardly from the inner end of the lock cylinder, having 1. an enlarged head portion at one end thereof, a first portion of which is sized to be slidably received in the inner end portion of the key slot, 2. lock lug means, forming a second portion of said enlarged head portion, positioned outside of the key slot and extending radially outwardly beyond the lock cylinder; B. notch means in the fixed lock barrel sized and positioned to receive said lock lug means; C. compression spring means to hold said lock lug means in said notch means when the proper key is not inserted in the key slot, said compression spring means being yieldable inwardly upon full insertion of a proper key, the tip portion of which engages said head portion to move said bolt actuating bar inwardly a distance sufficient to disengage said lock lug means from said notch means to permit rotational movement of the lock cylinder and said bolt actuating bar upon manipulation of the key.

2. A lock as defined in claim 1 in which said lock lug means comprises a pair of oppositely extending lock lugs.
3. A lock as defined in claim 2 in which the fixed lock cylinder provides a through bore for the reception of the lock barrel and said notch means comprises a pair of notches in the lock barrel in a diametrically opposed relationship about the inner periphery of the through bore, said pair of notches being sized and positioned to receive said pair of oppositely extending lock lugs when a proper key is not fully inserted in the key slot.
4. A lock as defined in claim 3 including a fixed closure means for the inside end of the through hole in the door, and a hole in said closure means for passage therethrough of said bolt actuating bar.
5. A lock bar as defined in claim 4 in which said compression spring means comprises a helical compression spring under compression between said fixed closure means and said enlarged head portion.
6. A lock bar as defined in claim 5 including inner and outer seat means for said helical compression spring.
7. A lock bar as defined in claim 6 in which said inner seat means includes an annular flange portion nested in the hole in said closure means.
8. A lock bar as defined in claim 6 in which both of said inner and outer seat means comprise generally cup shaped members to prevent disalignment oF said helical compression spring.
