INVENTOR GABRIEL G. TAUBER MM; [Id/W ATTORNEY CONVENTION BADGE HOLDERS AND PRINTING CARD INSERT BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention This invention relates to a convention badge holder of the type worn in the breast pocket at meetings, conventions, and similar undertakings, and the holder is supported on a pocket upper edge by means incorporated in the holder.
2. Statement of the Prior Art Convention badge holders which have two pockets or enclosures and which in some manner exhibit one such enclosure above the edge of the wearers pocket were first disclosed in U. S. Pat. No. 3,216,135 (Wright, 1965). Subsequent improvements include applicants prior U.S. Design Pat. No. 202,229 and U.S. Pat. No. 3,295,235. Subsequent developments include means for supporting the upper pocket or enclosure in adjustable fashion, one such method forming the subject matter of Klein et al., U.S. Pat. No. 3,355,826. These prior holders have each been used with a rigid plastic card disposed in the upper pocket thereof to the purpose that an attendee at a convention, trade meeting or similar gathering can (I) be identified by a glance at the card displayed in the pocket bearing his name and/or affiliation thereon, and (2) the card is removable at exhibit booths or stations and may be impressed by the exhibitor in a device such as that used for imprinting credit card information to provide a list or compilation of those visiting the booth or exhibit. This latter feature enables exhibitors to retain a list of potential customers, dealers, and the like, without the necessity for hand noting of each person so encountered. This function for the prior holders has been hampered by the fact that they were not designed or constructed with the function of repeated placement and removal of the card from the pockets in mind. Instead, it was intended that a paper or cardboard insert be employed therein as the identifying indicia carrier, and that placement of the card be relatively permanent in nature.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to improved convention badge holders of the stand-up or fold-over variety incorporating means for the convenient placement and removal of rigid or semi-rigid cards from the upper pockets thereof. Such means, in the preferred embodiments of the invention disclosed hereinafter comprehends a particularly formed entry and removal slot, and a guide seal which effectively positions the card in a desired identifying position upon each insertion.
It is an objective of the invention that, in the indicated position, a portion of the card be disposed exteriorly of the holder to provide a grasping portion for ease of removal.
Other and further objects of the invention will become aparent to those skilled in the art from a consideration of the following specification when read in conjunction with the annexed drawing.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a front elevational view showing the present invention as embodied in a holder of the stand-up variety;
FIG. 2 is a reverse side elevational view of the holder of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 shows the invention as embodied in a holder of the fold-over variety.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring initially to FIGS. 1 and 2, a first form of the invention is therein generally identified by reference numeral 10. The holder is formed preferably of clear, flexible plastic material throughout, initially comprising a front sheet 12 and a rear sheet 14 of said transparent plastic. The front and rear sheets are joined, as by heat sealing or otherwise, at a bottom seal 16, a side seal 18, and a top seal 20. In addition, an intermediate seal 22 secures the sheets together and forms them into upper and lower compartments or pockets 24, 26, respectively. It will be observed that the front sheet 12, in the area of the lower pocket 26, is of greater width than the rear sheet whereby the latter has a marginal edge 28 spaced inwardly from the corresponding vertical edge 30 of the front sheet. The rear sheet further has a thumb slot 32 therein to permit placement of a program card, directory, or other data bearing sheet therein.
A die cut slit 34 extending at its ends from the intermediate seal 22 provides a flap 36. The fiap overlaps the pocket edge of a wearer when in use, as disclosed in prior U.S. Pat. No. 3,216,235.
In this invention the upper compartment is sealed at its edge 38 whereby it is sealed at its four peripheral edges. The semirigid printing card 40 employed with the holder is of rectangular form and closely resembles those used for credit card purposes. Impressed or embossed thereon is identifying indicia (not shown), including the name of the wearer and/or other information (e.g., his affiliation, address, etc.). The name portion is visible through the transparent material of the holder and serves thus to identify the wearer, Moreover, the card may be removed and placed in a printing device of the type used in credit card transactions so that an exhibitor may easily retain the name of an interested business contact for future reference. The card 40 is dimensioned for disposition in the upper pocket 24. A curvilinear slit 42 is formed in one panel section of the upper pocket to extend from the upper seal 20 to adjacent the intermediate seal 22, the slit being located adjacent the seal 38 but spaced inwardly therefrom on the rear sheet of the holder. An enlarged crescent form cut-out 44 is also provided on said section for facilitating entry and removal of the card 40 from the upper pocket. As best shown in the rear view, FIG. 2, the card is partially exposed when in place in the pocket thus providing a grasping portion.
In order to guide the card into correct position in the holder and to retain it against inadvertent displacement, the upper compartment is provided with a compound guide seal having a first section 46 which is parallel to the upper and intermediate seals, and a second section 48 extending angularly upward to the upper seal 20. As will be seen in FIG. 2, the card conveniently fits between the seal portion 46 and the intermediate seal 22.
The invention may also be advantageously embodied in a holder of the fold-over variety as illustrated in FIG. 3. There, a holder 10a is formed of two sheets of transparent plastic to provide an inside pocket 26a and an outer pocket 24a. These pockets are divided along a combined fold line and crease or seal 22a, and the outer pocket is sealed at its peripheral edges 20a, 38a, and 30a. The exposed or forward side panel section of the pocket 24a has a curvilinear, substantially vertical slit 42a therein, with a crescent form cut-out 44a formed in the section between the slit and the seal 30a. A guide seal having sections 46a and 48a interconnects the panel section of the upper pocket in the same manner as sections 46 and 48 of the first form of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a convention badge holder having a transparent exposed compartment and having a compartment disposed within the pocket of a wearer, the exposed compartment being formed of connected sheets of material, and a rigid printing card removably mounted in the exposed pocket:
means joining the peripheral edges of the exposed pocket to one another;
the exposed pocket being formed of superimposed sheets of material;
a curvilinear slit in one of said sheets extending substantially vertically;
an entry cut-out in said sheet opening on said slit; and
a guide seal connecting the sheets together to position the card in place.
2. The invention of claim 1, wherein:
the slit is formed adjacent a side edge of the pocket.
3. The invention of claim 2, wherein:
the entry cut-out is of crescent form.
4. The invention of claim 2, wherein:
the guide seal includes an angular portion and a second portion parallel to the opposite connected edges of the compartment.
5. In a convention badge holder of the type having a front panel, a rear panel, means joining the front and rear panels along adjacent edge portions and along an intermediate line of connection to provide two pocket sections, and a rigid printing card removably mounted in one of the pockets:
a lower pocket having an entry edge spaced inwardly from a backing edge;
an upper pocket separated from the lower pocket by a transverse intermediate seal connecting the front and rear panels;
the upper pocket including a front panel portion and a rear panel portion;
the respective panel portions being connected along upper and lower edges thereof and being connected along vertical side edges;
one of said panel portions having a curvilinear slit therein extending from the upper edge to the lower edge thereof, the slit defining side elements of the panel portion;
one of the side elements having an enlarged, crescent form cut-out therein at the slit; and
a guide seal, having a first section parallel to the upper and lower edges and a second angular section, the panel first section being spaced from the lower edges a distance to accommodate the printing card therebetween.
