Description

(No Model.)
J. LEIB.
ROD COUPLING.
No. 365,263. Patented June 21, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN LEIB, OF SANDY RUN, PENNSYLVANIA.
ROD-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,263, dated June 21, 1887.
Application filed November 4, 1886. Serial No. 217.994. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN LEIB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sandy Run, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rod-Couplings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation showing two sections apart. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the same together, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view of the ring. Fig. 4. is a plan view of one of the sleeves. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of the device, and Fig. 6 is a vertical section of one of the sleeves.
My invention relates to an improvement in couplings which will not part casually, yet which may be readily uncoupled when desired.
The following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, will enable others skilled in the artto understand my invention.
Referring to the annexed drawings by letters, A A designate the ends of the two rodsections. The section A is constructed with a cylindrical enlargement, B, an annular groove, D, and a prismatic portion, 0, the said groove being between the shoulder F of enlargement Band the prismatic portion. Centrally in the end of the section A is a female screw-threaded socket, which is indicated by dotted lines on Figs. 1 and 2. A designates the other rodsect-ion above referred to, which, constructed with a cylindrical enlargement, B, of the same diameter as the enlargement B, section A, is
constructed with a male screw, G, the threads of which are adapted to the female threads in the socketed end of the section A.
M designates aprisinatic portion which corresponds in size and facets with the prismatic portion 0, which is integral with the section A. This prismatic portion M is integral with the rod-section.
N designates a cylindrical sleeve, the interior ofwhich presents facets corresponding in all respects to the facets of the two prismatic portions 0 M. The length of this sleeve is equal to twice the thickness of each one of the pushed forward, so as to uncover the groove D. I now look the parts together by means of an annular claspingring, I, which is of the same external diameter as theenlargements B' B, and of the same width as the annular groove D, in which this ring is applied, as shown in Fig. 2. The ring I is composed of two semicircles hinged together and provided with latching portion J K, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The male latching portion K is provided with a finger-piece, b, by pressing on which the ring can be unlatched and detached from the couplings.
Having described my invention, I claim- A rod-coupling consisting of the section A, provided with an enlargement, B, a prismatic portion, 0, an intermediate groove, and a fe male screw-threaded socket, and the section A, provided with an enlargement, B, a prismatic portion, M, and a male screw, in com bination with an internally-prismatic sleeve and aclasping-ring, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN LEIB.
