Aiiw'lzeys UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL HOLIAVEG, OF BARMEN, PRUSSIA, GERMANY.
POCKET-KNIFE.
SPECIFICA'IIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,414, dated June 7, 1887.
Application filed January 10, 1387. Serial No. 224,886.
To all 1072 0772 it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL HoLLWEe,of Barmen, Ithcnish Prussia, Germany, have invented a new and Improved Knife, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved knife with movable blades in which all springs are dispensed with, and in which each blade is held in a locked position when opened or closed, and the blade is similar view of the same with the blades closed.
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line or x of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same with parts removed. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the back locking-plate. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the knife blades; and Figs. 7 to 13 are detail views of parts of the knife, hereinafter more fully described.
The knife casing or handle consists of two side pieces or plates, A, on each of which can be secured an ordinary handle, B. The two side pieces are fastened together by rivets It, on which turn the knifeblades, and by a back plate, 0, (see Fig. 5,) provided with the lugs h, which fit in corresponding recesses, 1;, formed in the said side plates, A.
Each of the knife-blades K is provided with the usual aperture, a, through which passes the rivet It, and with a second square aperture, 1), which corresponds with the square aperture b formed in the turning-plate E, (see Fig. 7,) adapted to turn on the said rivet R. In the apertures b and b fit the trunnions of the carrying-pin F, (see Figs. 11 and 3,) adapted to slide in the semicircular recess f, formed in the side plates, A. V l
It will be seen that when the plate E is turned the knife-blade K is also turned with (No model.)
on the plate A, by the washer G, which fits over the central part of the plate E and over the trunnions i i of the handle D. The rivet R holds the washer Gin place. (See Fig. 3.)
The handle D is provided in its rim with two recesses, r r, placed opposite each other, and into which fits a corresponding lug, n, formed on the locking-plate H, secured to the side plate, A, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4.
If two knife blades K are fulcrumed on one rivet R, as shown in Fig. 3 and the lower parts of Figs. 1 and 2, then I place a partitionplat e, L, (shown in Fig. 13,) between the said knifeblades K, as shown in Fig. 3; but if only one knifeblade K is fulcrumed 011 the rivet It, as shown in the upper part of Figs. 1 and 2, then I usea partition-plate, L, (see Fig. 13,) on each side of the knifeblade K. This partition-plate L is provided with the semicin cnlar slot f, corresponding to the slot f in the side plate, A. In the latter case I need but one handle D on one side of the knife, and the other side of the knife is provided with a semicircular plate, J, without a handle, as shown in Fig. 12.
The operation is as follows: When the knife is in a closed position, as shown in Fig. 2, and the operator desires to open one of the knifeblades, he moves the respective handle D into i a right-angular position to the plate E, and by inserting his finger-nail under the inclined edge (I of the handle D presses the latter upward. This upward movement throws the notch r outof contact with the lug n on the locking-plate H, and the operator then turns the handle D, whereby the plate E turns with the handle D and the respective knifc-blade K turns with the plate E on account of its connection with the latter by the carrier-pin F. As soon as the respective knife-blade K is fully opened, as shown in Fig. 1, then the operator presses the handle D flat upon the plate A,
whereby the other notch ,r, engages the lug non the locking-plate H, and the knife-blade K is thus held locked in the open position, as the handle D and the plate E are prevented from turning.
It will be seen that the knife-blades can all be independently opened or closed and held locked in either position without compelling the operator to touch the knife-blades. It will also be seen that no springs of any description are used in the construction of my knife.
The improvement can be used on pocketknives or larger knives, and it can also be adapted to corkscrew-blades, &c.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent-- 1 l. The combination, with the handle, the side plates of which are immovable with respect to each other, of a blade pivoted within the handle and provided with an outer independent handle for throwing it into or out of the knife-handle, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the handle, the
. side plates of which are immovable with respect to each other, and a locking-lug on the outer side of the handle, of a blade pivoted within the handle and provided with an outer independent handle adapted to engage the said locking-lug, and thereby lock the blade when thrown, substantially as set forth.
3. In a knife, the combination, with aknifeblade, of a carrier-pin connected with the said blade, a turning-plate connected with the said carrier-pin, and a handle'pivoted on the said turning-plate, substantially as shown and de scribed.
