Abstract

A wraparound carrier is formed from a unitary paperboard blank and is particularly adapted to transport large glass bottles. The carrier consists of a top panel with side panels extending therefrom and having flaps at the distal ends of the side flaps, these being folded about the bottom of the bottles and being secured together. The top panel overlying the tops of the bottles is scored and slit to provide a pair of finger holds, each defined by a fold down tab foldable with respect to a tab score line intersecting an upper score line connecting the top panel and correlative side panel. Each of the tab score lines has a cut line connecting the ends thereof, and the tab formed thereby has a score line therein extending at right angles to the upper score line connecting the top panel with a side panel. Upon folding of the tabs which are in facing relationship by reason of the parallel score lines forming the tabs in the top panel, the tabs are enabled to be folded against the undersides of the top and a correlative side panel. The two folded tabs thus provide a pair of finger holds, and at the same time the top panel and the side panels are strengthened for transport of the containers within the wrapper.

The structure according to the present invention enables the top panel to be strengthened by reinforcement at such finger holds by fold-down tabs defined by score lines intersecting score lines between the top and side panels of the carrier.
THE DRAWING FIG. I is a plan view of a cut and scored blank for forming a carrier according to the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a carrier formed from the blank of FIG. ll;
FIG. 3 is a detailed end view of the carrier seen in FIG. 2 to an enlarged scale; and
FIG. 4 is a vertical section taken along the line 4-4 of FIG. 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
The improved wraparound carrier according to the present invention is referred to by the reference numeral is adapted to transport a pair of bottles B. The wrapper 10 is formed from a cut and scored blank 10A seen in FIG. 1 comprises a top panel 11 flanked by side panels 12 and 13 foldably connected to top panel lll along upper spaced score lines M. Adjacent the base of the two side panels 12 and 13 are inclined base panels 116 foldably connected to the respective side panels 12 and 13 by a score line 17.
The distal portions of the inclined panels 16 are foldably connected along a scored line 18 to flaps 19 adapted to be folded against the base of the bottles B as seen in FIG. 2 in any convenient manner as by gluing. The inclined panels 16 are each provided with a pair of cutout portions defined by a cut line 15A and a curved line 158 which may extend into the side panels 12 and 13 adjacent the lower extremities thereof. The cutout portions 15 provide areas through which the bases of the bottles may extend as seen in FIG. 2 when the wrapper is erected as seen in said figure.
Gusset panels are formed in the upper extremities of the side panels 12 and I3 and the end portions of the upper panel ll. Gusset panels 21 and 25 are thus defined these being folded as seenin FIG. 1 against the neck portions of the bottles B. The gusset panels and the openings 15 provide structure for maintaining the bottles in position within the wrapper when fonned. The gusset panels 211 are defined by score lines 22 extending from the score lines 114 at a point spaced from the end of the panels ill, and in a direction inclined to the edges of the panels 12 and 13. A short score line 23 connects the score lines 22 where they intersect with the score lines M.
Structure is provided for transporting the carrier seen in FIG. 2 and for stiffening the upper panel Ill; and includes a pair of spaced finger holds indicated generally by the reference numeral 24. These are defined by spaced parallel tab score lines 26 inclined at an angle of approximately 45 with respect to their respective score lines 14, the tab score lines 26 each extending into the upper panel 11 and into the side panel 12 or 13 as the case may be. The ends of each of the score lines 26 are connected by a cut line 27 to define a folddown tab '29 which is intersected by a score line 28 extending at right angles to the score line 14.
Upon folding of the tabs 29 as seen in FIG. 4 to position the score line 28 falls into register with the score line 14 on the inside of the wrapper blank 10A, the flap 29 being thereby divided into two portions, one being in face to face contact with the side panel R2 or I3, and the other portion being in contact with the underside of the top panel III.
The provision of the score line 26 extending into the top panel 11 and the side panels 12 and 113 lends stiffness to the top panel llll for transporting purposes, and the shear incident to the weight of the bottles B is taken in part by that portion of the score line 26 and that portion of the flap 29 in contact with the side panel 12 or 13 to greatly enhance the transporting ability of the loaded wrapper.
I claim:
l. A carrier for a row of an even number of necked containers or the like, said carrier being formed from a cut and scored blank of paperboard or the like and comprising:
a. opposed side panels and a top panel connected along upper score lines;
b. a flap extending from the distal portions of said side panels and foldably connected thereto and adapted to be folded against the bottoms of said containers and secured together;
c. finger holds in said carrier for transport of same, said finger holds being located between areas of said blank which are adapted to contain an adjacent pair of said containers, and comprising:
i. a pair of fold-down tabs, each being defined by a tab forming score line intersecting one of said first named score lines and extending into said top panel and one of said side panels;
ii. a cut line connecting the ends of said tab forming score line;
iii. a tab score line in each of said tabs extending from one of said upper score lines.
2. A carrier according to claim I wherein said tab forming score lines extend at an angle of appnoximately 45 to said upper score line, and said tab score line extends approximate ly at right angles to said upper score line.

Claims (2)

1. A carrier for a row of an even number of necked containers or the like, said carrier being formed from a cut and scored blank of paperboard or the like and comprising: a. opposed side panels and a top panel connected along upper score lines; b. a flap extending from the distal portions of said side panels and foldably connected thereto and adapted to be folded against the bottoms of said containers and secured together; c. finger holds in said carrier for transport of same, said finger holds being located between areas of said blank which are adapted to contain an adjacent pair of said containers, and comprising: i. a pair of fold-down tabs, each being defined by a tab forming score line intersecting one of said first named score lines and extending into said top panel and one of said side panels; ii. a cut line connecting the ends of said tab forming score line; iii. a tab score line in each of said tabs extending from one of said upper score lines.
2. A carrier according to claim 1 wherein said tab forming score lines extend at an angle of approximately 45* to said upper score line, and said tab score line extends approximately at right angles to said upper score line.
