Field of the Invention This invention relates generally to a container formed from paperboard and is especially related to those containers having multithickness sidewalls whereby the container has good stacking strength. The process of making such a container is also contemplated.
2. The Prior Art As far as is known, the art does not disclose a container sleeve adapted to be formed into a containerhaving three SUMMARY OF INVENTION The present invention has for its particular object the making of a container sleeve from a pair of identical cut and scored blanks which when folded and glued as disclosed herein result in a contai'nerhaving good stacking strength by reason of the fact that the laminated sidewalls thereof consist of more than two laminae.
DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a cut and scored blank for forming a container sleeve according to the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a view similar to FIG. 1, but showing a mirror side panel folded and glued across a side panel seen in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 shows a first panelsimilar to FIG. 2 anda second panel formed like FIG. 2 but in overlying relationship thereto and turned through a 180 angle about an axis passing therethrough and parallel to the opposed side panels thereof;
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG.,3 and showing an alternate method whereby the container sleeve may be formed;
FIG. 5 is an isometric view of a container formed from the carton sleeve according to the present invention; and
FIG. 6 is a vertical section taken substantially along the line 6-6 of FIG. 5 looking in the direction of the arrows.
SPECIFICATION The carton sleeve according to the present invention is formed from a pair of cut and scored blanks 10 seen in FIG. 1 which when combined in the fashion as will be taught result in a finished carton 10A seen in FIG. 5.
The cut and scored blank 10 seen in FIG. 1 has a portion which is symmetrical about an axis A-A in the plane of the blank 10 and extending midway of a main panel 11 and parallel to a side panel 12 hingedly connected to main panel 1 l and foldable with respect thereto along score lines 13. Each of the side panels 12 has end flaps l4 foldably connected thereto along score lines 16.
The symmetrical blankthus far described is asymmetrical by the provision of a mirror-extension side panel 12A hingedly connected to one of the side panels 12 at a score line 19. Such mirror-extension side panel 12A has a mirror-extension end flap 14A at each end thereof foldable with respect to the mirror-extension side panel 12A along a score line 16A.
The upper face of the mirror extension panel 12A has glue applied thereto and is mirror-extension against side panel 12, so that the side panel 12 now has a double thickness as seen in FIG. 2 by the superimposed mirror extension side panel 12A and the mirror-extension side flap 14 thereof.
In forming a carton sleeve according to the present invention a second carton blank formed in the aforementioned manner 180 turned or phased through 180 about the axis A-A and superimposed open the first blank as described to provide an referred to by the reference numeral 108 assembly which is completed by the'gluingof slde panel 12 and the end flaps 14 thereof to the mirror-extension side panel 12A and the.
mirror-emulsion side panelsMA thereof.
Alternately the gluing step just described may be acknowledged bythe two carton blanks being in the position seen in FIG. 4. Irrespective of whether the gluing operation is carried on as seen in FIG. 3 or'FIG. 4 the finished carton sleeve has a sidewall of three-laminae thickness comprising mirror-extension side panel 12A and two side panels 12. all
glued together.
The sleeve formed in the aforementioned manner is then formed into a carton having a sidewall with a thickness of three laminae by folding of the end panel 17 against the folded in end flaps 14 and 14A, the end panels 17 being glued thereagainst.
The carton thus formed has good stacking strength by reason of the multithick sidewalls with particular reference to FIG. 6.
Iclaim:
l. A sleeve-type container having improved stacking strength characterized by laminated sidewalls of not less than three laminae comprising:
a. identical rectangular first and second cut and scored blanks each having: v p i. a symmetricalportion consisting of a main panel, op-
posed side and end panels hingedly joined thereto;
ii. end flaps hingedly joined to the ends of each side panel;
iii. a mirror extension of one of said side panels and the end flaps thereof and being foldably connected to said one side panel; and
iv. said mirror extension being folded with respect to said one side panel and glued thereto;
b. said second blank being turned through a l degrees angle'about an axis passing therethrough and parallel to the opposed side panels thereof;
c. the resulting double-thickness side panel of said first blank being glued to the single-thickness side panel of said second blank; and
d. the resulting double-thickness side panel of said second blank being glued to the single-thickness side panel of said first blank.
