NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM RUDDELL, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
SHUTTER-WORKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.350,896, dated October 12,1886. Application filed August 9, 1884. Serial No. 140,110. (No model.)
.To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM RUDDELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blind-Operators; and I do hereby declare the, following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved device for opening, closing, fastening, or holding shutters, the same being operated from the interior of the building.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a perspective view, Fig. 2 a sectional view, and Fig. 3 a modification.
A represents the window-frame, to which the shutter Bis hinged, said shutter abutting at itslower end against a sub sill, 0, attached to the lower portion of the window'frame. The sub-sill is provided at a point near the side of the window-frame with a recess, a, one side of which is substantially straight, while the opposite side is curved, as shown at a, and provided at this side with a spring, I).
Attached to the shutter B at a point opposite the recess a, when the shutter is closed, is a bracket, 0, having an upward extension, 0, and a horizontally-projecting portion, a, to which one of the links of a flexible chain is attached. A series of links, (1, are attached to the bracket and an end link, d, which is pivoted to an operating bar or handle; D. The links dconstitute together a flat flexible con- The inner side of the links are cut away or beveled, so as to allow the chain to .bend, so as to form the segment of a circle,
while the outer portion of the links are at right angles with their side, the joints abutting against each other, so asto prevent the same being turned in an opposite direction, or more than straight. Pintles 6 connect each link of the chain with the next. The last link, (1, is provided with an eye, f, through which passes a horizontal pintle, which connects the same with an operating-handle, D, which operating-handle is provided at suitable intervals with notches or recesses g g,
and thus holds the blind in a fixed position.
On the inner side of the rail 0, opposite the opening a, is attached a suitable slotted plate, h, through which passes the chain and bar D, the spring hereinbefore described pressing upon said bar throws the notches therein in engagement with one side of the plate, thus making the blind secure in any desired position as opened, closed, or bowed.
A pin, G, is attached to the window-casing,
same out of engagement with the pin G, the 7 handlebar is then swung around, so as to be at substantially right angles with the window-frame, and by pushing the same outwardly the blind is swung open, the links be coming substantially rigid as bent upon each other, owing to the bevel on their inner sides. \Vhen the blind is opened or partially opened, it may be secured in such position by the handle-bar coming in contact with the plate 71,
the notches in said handle-bar being thrown or pressed againstthe plate by the spring.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a shutter-worker, of a bar, D, having a series of notches, a series of links pivotally connected by vertical pins, each link being provided at each end with a beveled shoulder adapted to form a bearing for the like shoulders of the adjacent links,
so that said links will present a rigid connection between the bar D and shutter, the end link of the series being adapted for attachment to the shutter, a projection engaging said bar D, and a horizontal pivot connecting one [00 of the links, (1, with the bar D, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature inpresence of two witnesses.
HIRAM RUDDELL.
