March 17, 1970 P. J. JORDAN- 3,500,836
HAIR CURLER WITH OBSCURING MEANS Filed Dec. 25, 1966 PHIL/P J. JORDAN INVENTOR.
lgn l United States Patent O 3,500,836 HAIR CURLER WITH OBSCURING MEANS Philip J. Jordan, 263 Lincoln St., Worcester, Mass. 01605 Filed Dec. 23, 1966, Ser. No. 604,429 Int. Cl. A45d 2/00, 8/00; A41g /00 US. Cl. 13240 2 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hair curler including a cylindrical mandrel for receiving thereabout a coil of a persons hair. A split sleeve is provided for clamping the persons hair to the mandrel. 0n the outside of the sleeve is mounted a covering of artificial hair to conceal the curler from view while the hair is being set.
In a particular embodiment of the present invention, the hair curling device comprises:
(a) A cylindrical mandrel for receiving a wrapping of hair;
(b)A clamping member comprising an open framework in the form of a resilient split sleeve adapted to be sprung over the mandrel with the wrapping of hair on it; and
(c) A covering of hair carried by the clamping member for obscuring the exposed portions of the mandrel and clamping member.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION According to the prior art such as disclosed in US. Patent No. 794,479, devices for carrying artificial hair are known, wherein a hollow member carrying a swatch of hair is attached to the head of hair of a person by means of a comb. 1
Hair curlers comprising a cylindrical mandrel for receiving a wrapping of hair and a clamping member c0- operating with the mandrel are known and are used extensively by the female population. Because of the unattractive appearance of the curlers while affixed to the hair of a wearer, various devices, such as scarves, are placed on the head of the wearer to hide the curlers from view while the hair is being set.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide an attractive hair curler which may be worn in public.
Another object of the invention is a hair curler with artificial hair attached thereto which presents a pleasing appearance.
Still another object of the invention is a hair curler combining a mandrel, a clamp for holding hair on the mandrel, and artificial hair attached to the clamp for hiding the mandrel and clamp from view while the hair is being set and curled.
A particular object of the invention is to provide a hollow foraminous cylindrical hair curling mandrel upon which a strand of the users hair is to be wrapped and curled, in combination with a resilient clamping shell for holding the users hair on the mandrel where the shell carries a covering of a similar kind of hair to obscure the mandrel and shell.
Further objects and the broad scope of the invention will become obvious from an inspection of the specification, claim and appended drawings.
The invention will now be further described with reference to the drawing wherein:
3,500,836 Patented Mar. 17, 1970 FIGURE 1 shows the manner of using the invention;
FIGURE 2 shows the device in perspective; and
FIGURE 3 shows a cross section on the line III-III of FIGURE 2.
With particular reference to FIGURE 2, mandrel 1 is shown comprising a foraminous cylinder of usual construction around which hair to be curled is wrapped and held in place by resilient shell 2 in the form of a split clamping sleeve, the latter carrying a covering 3 of a similar kind of hair to obscure the exposed portions of the mandrel and clamp.
In FIGURE 3 is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention where clamping shell 2 is an open framework of metal or plastic having large rectangular openings therein to permit attachment of the hair covering 3. The hair covering comprises preferably a plurality of separate portion 4 and 5.
In a further preferred embodiment the hair ends of portion 4 are secured by a seam of fabric 6 where the seam is laced or sewn through the rectangular openings of the clamping shell. The portion 5, as illustrated, shows the hair ends secured by a seam of fabric 7 on the outer surface of clamp 2, with the seam sewn or otherwise secured to the open framework. The portion 5 is subdivided so that half of the hair trails to the left and the other half is wrapped around the edge of clamp 2 and threaded back through the open framework of clamp 2.
In the devices of the present invention the hair of the user is wrapped around mandrel 1 to be curled and the clamp 2 having the hair covering is positioned on the users hair and mandrel 1. After a plurality of devices have been mounted, the effect shown in FIGURE 1 is produced.
I claim:
1. A hair curling device, comprising (a) a cylindrical mandrel for receiving a wrapping of hair,
(b) a clamping member comprising an open framework in the form of a resilient split sleeve adapted to be sprung over said mandrel with said wrapping of hair thereon, and
(c) a covering of hair carried by the clamping member for obscuring the exposed portion of the mandrel and clamping member, the said hair covering comprising a first portion secured to said clamping member along the middle thereof, and a second portion extending around the front margin of said clamping member and extending rearwardly therefrom.
2. A hair curling device as recited in claim 1, wherein the hair ends of said first portion are secured by a first fabric seam and the hair ends of said second portion are secured by a second fabric seam, and said first and second seams are secured by thread to said open framework of the clamping member.
