Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo WILLIAIIA. CLARK, or BETHANY, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IIN BULLET-MOLDS.
Specification forlning part of Leiters Patent Yo. 34,544. .dated April l5, 18652.
Z'e @ZZ whom, t mayconcern:
5e it known that I, W ILLIAM A. CLARK, of the town of Bethany, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement inthe Construction of Bullet-Molds for ythe Casting of Bullets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof,. referring also to the annexed drawings as explanatory thereof. y
My invention consists in an improved mode of operating the eut-oft' which separates the bullet from the sprue.
Thecnt-oils are usually constructed to play horizontally upon the pivot which forms the hinge of the mold, as shown in Fig. 6, and operated by striking the projection on the upper side, as shown in the drawings, against some foreign substance, and repeating the process until the handles become too hot for manipulation. l
My cutoil's-a drawing of which is given in Fig. 2-are made with two slots, one in the rear, marked It, which plays under the head of the stationary pivot c, and theA other, marked D, which plays under the headof the screw d. The pivot c and the screw l are like those used in the ordinary molds, and serve the same purpose, the former being the hinge on which the jaws of the molds move, and the latter serving to hold the Cut-off in place, and enabling it to be removed at pleasure. A lever, as shown in Fig. 4, turning on a pivot at g, is attached to the front part of the cut-off by a catch at e,- so that when the lever is raised the apertures in the cut-oft' correspond with and,I'orm the sprue'holes forthe mold, as shown in Fig. 1. The molds now being Iilled, the lever is del pressed, and the cut-off, thus moved in the line of the direction of the-length ofthe mold, sepa rates the lead in the liiue from that in the mold. The advantages resulting from this simple arrangement-are obvious. Among them it may ,level surface, the cut-off may be operated without the necessity of manipulating thehandles.
molds, from the fact that, as it is necessary the upper surface of the molds during `the process the bullet at its point of contact with the plate of the eut-oil` to bind against the cut-off, and thus prevent its easy separation from the mold. I am enabled in my improvement to obviate this difficulty by slightly curving up the front end of the'cut-ot, as exhibited in Fig. 3, and by making the extreme rear end slightly thinner than the rest of the plat-e, as shown at f in Fig. 3, so that when the lever is depressed and space between the heads of the pivot and screw slight play of the cut-off, thusrelieving the bullet from the friction of the eutloif plate. -ne mold being then opened, the bullet will readily drop out. Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Ietters Patent, is-
Ihe mode of operating the cut-off of bulletmolds, made to slide longitudinally by 'a lever, substantially as afd for the purposes set forth.
. WM. A. CLARK. In presence of- JNO. S. BEACH, `CI-InRLEs N. J oIINsoN.
be noted that the mold being placed upon any` A diiiiculty also is experienced' in ordinary cut-off should be closely in Contact with the ofeutting, there is atendency yin the lead of the sprue removed, there will be suicient and the upper surface of the mold to allow a'
