SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 347,973; dated August 24, 1886.

Be it known that I, SHIPLEY \V. SPooNER, of Astoria, in the county of Glatsop and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Lamp-Burner, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention is designed more particularly for lanterns and carriage-lamps.

The invention consists of the special construction of the burner, the match-carrier, and the igniter, all as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan view of my new and improved lamp-burner with the cap removed. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken on the line w m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an opposite section on the line 7 Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side view of the match-carrier, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the match scrateher or igniter.

The body A, wiek-tube B, and cap 0 may be of the ordinary or of any approved construction, except that the cap is provided with the match scrateher or igniter D.

E is the disk for carrying several matches, F, which disk, being revolved, brings the matches first in contact with the igniter D, and then in line with the upper end of the wick-tube, so the flame of the match will ignite the wick. The disk Eis formed with recesses 0, preferably dovetailed, into which the matches are inserted, and it is secured upon the shaft G, which is journaled in the bodyA and also in the crosspiece or bridge I-I, so that by turning the shaft by the handle the matches will be brought in succession into contact with the igniter D and scratched and ignited. The cross-piece H is provided with a pivoted catch, (shown clearly in Fig. 2,) the hooked end of which engages the shaft G and holds its inner end upon the said cross-piece. By throwing the cap 0 back in the usual manner and releasing the catch the shaft and disk E may be readily removed when it is desired to clean the burner. The outer bearing of the shaft G is upon the upper edge of the body A, and the cap 0, when latched in the usual manner, holds the shaft in place. The two diaphragms J K in theburner are correspondingly slotted, as shown at j k, to form spaces for the revolution of the disk E and'matches F. The igniter D is, by preference, in the form of a spring-plate formed with several points or teeth, (I, as shown in Fig. 5, so it'will yield to the matches F, so there will be no danger of breaking the matches from contact with the igniter, and so it will be effective in igniting the match. This lighter is applicable to burners for burning any kind of oil, burning-fluid, or gas. 1 am aware that lamps have heretofore been provided with a match-carrying disk mounted on a shaft extending outside of the burner, and I do not claim the same, broadly, as of my invention; but said prior lighting devices were not adapted to be readily removed to allow of cleaning, whereas in my construction the match-carrying mechanism may be readily removed without the use of tools to allow of the parts being cleaned.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the ordinary lamp-burner, A B O, and the cross-piece H at one side of the wick-tube B, of the shaft G, journalcd on the upper edge of the body A and on the cross-piece, the disk E upon the inner end of the shaft between the wick-tube and the crosspiece, match-holding recesses being formed in the said disk, and the igniter D, extending through the cap 0, substantially asset forth. v

The combinatioinwith the ordinary bu rner, A B O, the cross-piece H at one side of the wick-tube B, and the hooked catch pivoted upon the said cross-piece, of the shaft G, journaled upon the upperedges of the body Aand the cross-piece, and held to the cross-piece by the catch, the match-holder E on the inner end of the shaft between the wick-tube'and the cross-piece, and the igniter D, extending through the cap 0, substantially as set forth.
