0/. A wmi WM. @f @Kk L WMPWM David M. Davis Q United States Patent 3,476,047 SHELL FOR CLEANING A SHOTGU David Maurice Davis, RJ). 6, Box 151A, Greensburg, Pa. 15601 Filed Dec. 22, 1967, Ser. No. 692,786 Int. Cl. F42b 7/00 US. Cl. 102-39 3 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A shell for cleaning a shotgun having solvent and a cleaning wad inserted within the shell.
This invention relates to a shell for cleaning a shotgun barrel.
A shotgun shell contains a powder base for propellant followed by ball shot material. When the powder is exploded within the gun, powder, shot and paper from the shell travel through the barrel of the gun leaving debris within the barrel. In some instances a lubricant with a patch has been inserted in the shell. This, however, only has the effect of lubricating the barrel. Debris is still left Within the barrel. The present invention, however, employs a structure which cleans the barrel of the shotgun as it is fired within the gun. This eliminates the necessary individual steps in hand cleaning.
I provide a shell for cleaning a shotgun which comprises, a cleaning solvent within the shell, a cleaning wad positioned within the shell so that the cleaning wad follows the cleaning solvent when the shell is discharged, and means within the shell for propelling the contents of the shell including the cleaning solvent and the cleaning wad. I also include an antirust positioned within the shell so that the antirust follows the cleaning wad; and coarse scrubbing wad positioned within the shell so that it precedes the cleaning solvent. I preferably provide that the cleaning solvent and antirust are enclosed in plastic containers and that the inside wall of the shell has a knife edge crimp which slices the plastic containers when the shell is exploded and the cleaning solvent and antirust leave the shell.
Other details, objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the following description of the present preferred embodiment and present preferred method of practicing the same proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown a present preferred embodiment of the invention and have illustrated a present preferred method of practicing the same in which:
FIGURE 1 is a sectional view of the assembled shell; and
FIGURE 2 is an exploded view of FIGURE 1.
FIGURES l and 2 show a shell 2 for cleaning a shot- 3,476,047 Patented Nov. 4, 1969 gun and having a cylindrical case 4, a base 6 and a knife edge crimp 8 on the inside wall of the cylindrical case 4. Within the base 6 there is a chamber 10, a piercing needle 12 and a seal 14 which has its thickest wall at the outer periphery and its thin portion at the center directly over the piercing needle 12. A suitable propellant is stored within the chamber 10. Compressed gas is preferred because of its cleanliness. Starting from base 6 the chamber 10 is followed by antirust material 16 in a plastic bag; a cleaning wad 18 which may comprise a series of cloth patches; a cleaning solvent material 20 contained in a plastic bag; a coarse scrubbing wad 22 which may consist of coarse patches; and a series of folds 24 closes the top of the shell 2. Separators 26, 28 and 30 separate the contents of the shell 2.
When the shotgun firing pin strikes the base 6 at the piercing needle 12, the piercing needle 12 pierces the thin wall of seal 14 allowing compressed gas in chamber 10 to escape and force the contents of shell 2 within cylindrical case 4 through the shotgun barrel. The coarse scrubbing wad 22 cleans major debris from the barrel. As the plastic containers holding the cleaning solvent 20 and antirust 16 pass through the cylindrical case 4, the knife edge crimp 8 slices the containers open. The cleaning solvent 20 dislodges debris clinging to the barrel and cleaning wad 18 wipes the dislodged debris from the barrel. The antirust 16 follows leaving a thin coating of antirust 16 within the barrel.
I claim:
1. A shell for cleaning a shotgun which comprises:
(a) a cleaning solvent enclosed in a plastic container within the shell;
(b) a cleaning wad positioned within the shell so that the cleaning wad follows the cleaning solvent when the shell is discharged;
(c) a knife edge crimp on the inside Wall of the shell which slices the plastic container when the shell is discharged and the cleaning solvent leaves the shell; and
(d) means within the shell for propelling the contents of the shell.
2. A shell for cleaning a shotgun as recited in claim 1, including an antirust enclosed in a plastic container and positioned within the shell so that the antirust follows the cleaning wad when the shell is discharged.
3. A shell for cleaning a shotgun as recited in claim 2, wherein the means propelling comprises a compressed gas.
