SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 345,141, dated July 6, 1886.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM HUGIIEs, of the cityof Auburn, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Uppers, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, iu which- Figures 1 and 3 are plan views of the outer and inner portions of the upper, respectively; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view upon the lines x x of Fig. l and y g/ of Fig. 3.
The object of my invention is to make a circulation of air around the foot within the boot or shoe, so that the foot may be kept dry from perspiration. rIhis object I accomplish by the use of the within-described boot or shoe upper,which is of ordinary exterior form, and is composed of an exterior part, A A A', of leather, and an interior part orlining, B B'B, of cloth or canvas. Throughthe front parts, b and e, of the parts of the upper are pierced small holes in such alternate position as isindicated by Fig. 2, and a similar arrangement of small holes is made upon each side of the upper, as shown at c and c', Fig. 1 and d and d, Fig. 3.
The alternate arrangement of the ventilatinto the boot or shoe, and, as the instep rises slightly when the foot is raised from the ground in walking, air will be drawn inward through these oritices and expelled when the' layers or parts, arranged alternately, substani tially as shown and described.
2. As an article of manufacture, an upper consisting of twolayers or parts, each of which is provided with three sets or series oi' ventilating-apertures, two of which are situated along the side of the instep and the other over the toes, said apertures being alternately arranged, substantially as described.
