Description

April 22, 1969 A. o. DOOLITTLE 3,439,679
COLOSTOMY OR ILEOSTOMY DEVICE Filed June 16, 1966 United States Patent 3,439,679 COLOSTOMY 0R ILEOSTOMY DEVICE Alton 0. Doolittle, 3899 Gundry Ave., Long Beach, Calif. 90807 Filed June 16, 1966, Ser. No. 558,027 Int. Cl. A61f /44 US. Cl. 128-283 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a colostomy or ileostomy device which is mounted on the abdomen of a user without the use of any additional belts, straps, o harness, but the device is adequately secured to the wearer by an adhesive which is applied to one face of a mounting disk.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel device of the character stated in which the pouch is detachably mounted to the disk in a novel and effective manner.
Another object is to provide a novel device of the character stated in which the disk is a fabric or plastic product known as moleskin, which can be readily removed from the abdomen of the wearer without irritation, and also it will adhere more effectively to the skin of the wearer.
A feature of the moleskin is that it has effective healing properties which will prevent skin irritation, and also can be applied or removed without a long waiting period. Also the type of disk herein described is water repellent and has better adhesive properties than cement or other adhesive types.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a novel receptacle or pouch which is light, thin, flexible, and is readily disposable after it has been used.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a novel device of the character stated in which the disposable pouch or bag is a separate part and distinct from the attaching disk, which can remain on the skin of the wearer even though the pouch may be removed and disposed of, that is, an additional pouch can be replaced on the disk without removing the disk from the wearer.
A feature of my invention is to provide an effective disk which is secured around the stoma with a leakproof attachment, and which can be removed and replaced at intervals without skin irritation.
Another feature of my invention is to provide a novel mounting disk for the pouch or bag which is soft and flexible and will conform to the various curves or shapes of the wearer.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device in which the stoma entrance can be shaped to conform to the configuration of the patients stoma.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description and the appended claims.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevation of my colostomy or ileostomy device.
FIGURE 2 is a rear elevation of the same.
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 33 of FIGURE 2.
FIGURE 4 is a vertical sectional view of my device in position on a wearer.
3,439, 79 Patented Apr. 22, 1969 FIGURE 5 is a front elevation of my device in position on a wearer.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a disk or pad which is provided with an adhesive on the inner surface thereof which will effectively adhere to the skin of the wearer. The disk 1 is formed of a pliable fabric or plastic material, preferably of a type commercially known as moleskin. The outer or exposed surface of the disk 1 is smooth and will not irritate the skin due to bending or movement of the wearer. A circular hole 2 is formed in the center of the disk 1 to receive the ring 3. The ring 3 is preferably formed of a nonmetallic material, such as plastic, and is molded or formed with a peripheral groove 4 therein. The edge of the hole 2 fits into the groove 4, thus securely and detachably mounting the ring in the disk 1. A diaphragm 5 is mounted on the inside of the ring 3 and is preferably attached to the ring by means of a string or an elastic band, thus stretching the diaphragm across the inner face of the ring 3. Two or more cuts 6 are formed in the diaphragm 5 so that the diaphragm will fit over the stoma 7, which is formed by the colostomy or ileostomy operation. The incisions 6 are of the proper length so that the diaphragm will fit over the stoma 7 as shown in FIG. 4, and will thus prevent leakage around the stoma 7.
A separate pouch 8' is formed of a light, flexible material which is waterproof and which is closed at the lower end and open at the top. The pouch or sack 8 is also somewhat elastic so that the ring 9, formed around the open end of the pouch, may he slipped over the ring 3 and fit into the groove 4, thus securely holding the pouch onto the ring with a tight sealed connection. It is obvious that the pouch 8 can be readily removed from the ring 3 and disposed of, as might be required from time to time. When disposing of the pouch 8 it is not necessary to remove the disk 1 or the ring 3, but these parts can remain on the patient and a new pouch 8 can be mounted on the ring 3 after the previous one has been disposed of. The disk 1 and the ring 3 attached thereto can remain on the patient for a considerable period of time, that is, a matter of days, whereas the pouch 8 can be removed and a new pouch replaced as frequently as required.
I claim:
1. A colostomy device comprising a disk, said disk having an adhesive on one face thereof to adhere to the user, said. disk having an opening therethrough, a ring positioned in said opening, a pouch closed at one end and open at the other, and means detachably securing the open end of said pouch to the ring, and a diaphragm extendiiig across one face of said ring, said diaphragm having intersecting cuts therein to provide openings through the diaphragm, and means securing said diaphragm to the ring, said ring having an annular groove in the periphery thereof, the open end of said pouch fitting into said groove to removably secure the pouch to the ring.
