Description

(ModeL) P. W. MIX 8a A. ARENS.
CUPBOARD LATCH.
No. 333,656. Patented Jan. 5, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK \V. MIX AND AUGUST ARENS, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNORS TO P. 85 F. CORBIN, OF SAME PLACE.
CUPBOARD-LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,6 6, dated January 5, 1886.
Application filed March 30, 1885. Serial No. 160,589. (ModeL) .To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FRANK WV. MIX and Answer ARENS, both citizens of the United States, residing at New Britain. in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cupboard-Latches, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of our latch and its keeper. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of said latch with the rear plate removed, and Fig. 3 isa horizontal section on line :0 m of Fig. 1.
A designates the latch-case, and B the keeper. The latch consists of an angle-lever having two radial arms, a and b, with trunnions c c projecting from each side at the angle or apex of said arms, by means of which trunnions and recesses in the case A the latch is pivoted to oscillate within the case. A rear plate, C, is placed over the latch to hold it within the case. The end of the arm a has a concentric face, which engages the keeper B, while the tail of the arm b lies between two edgewise-acting cams or inclines, d d, at the inner end of the knob or button-turnf, so that by turning the knob or button-turn in either direction the tail of the arm b will be thrown toward the rear of the case, and thereby the arm a will be withdrawn from the keeper into the case. A feather-spring, g, is secured within the case, with one end resting upon the inner side of the arm a of the latch to return said latch and knob to their normal position when the knob is released.
IVe are aware that latches have heretofore been made with a like knob or buttonturn, having edgewise-bearing cams on its inner end, in connection with a peculiar form of latch having a concentric face for engaging the keeper, but instead of two radial arms comparatively straight, the latch consisted of only one crooked arm. The retaining-spring was a spiral one, and had one end rest under this crooked latch, while its opposite end rested upon the rear plate.
By our improvements the construction is much more simple and the parts can be assembled much more conveniently, and therefore the latch can be produced at a less cost.
We claim as our invention- The herein-described latch, consisting of the keeper B, the case A, the two radial arms a I), having trunnions c 0 at their junction, said trunnions having their hearing in recesses in the case, the spring g,having one end secured to said case A and its opposite end bearing upon the inner side of the arm a, and mechanism acting upon the arm I) for throwing the latch, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
FRANK W. MIX. AUGUST ARENS. Witnesses:
