VENTILATOR FOR COOKING AND OTHER APARTMENTS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,379, dated December 15, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DANIEL BURGESS, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Ventilators for Cooking and other Apartments, of which the following is a specification.

In cooking and other apartments, especially in tenement-houses and flats, the odor from the kitchens, bath-rooms, and water-closets is very objectionable, because it passes into the hallways, and from one room to another, and to other apartments. Ineffectual efforts have been made heretofore to carry away these odors.

My present invention relates to a separate and independent flue especially adapted to ventilating the cooking-apartment, bath-room, and water-closets.

An upright boiler connected with waterback of range is ordinarily used in kitchens for a supply of hot water, thus giving unnecessary and objectionable heat to the kitchens. My invention utilizes this heat by placing the boiler in the ventilating-flue, and thus obtaining a strong current of air in said flue from the kitchen, bath-room, and water closet to the roof. The arrangement of parts is repeated at every story with increasing heat and currents in this flue.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional plan representing a portion of the building in which this improvement is introduced. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the line at w.

The kitchen is represented at A, and the chimney -jambs B receive between them a cooking-range, O, and the products of combastion are carried away to a smoke-flue, D. The range and chimney-jambs are diagonal, so as to occupy one corner of the kitchen, and there is a ventilating-flue, E, in the corner behind the chimney-jamb and range. \Vithin this ventilating-flue is the hot-water boiler E, which is supported upon a metallic grating or open-work floor, that does not obstruct the ventilating column of air. The pipes and conneotions between the hot-water boiler and the water-back of the range are to be of any desired character. Above the wall L, behind the range, and beneath the breast, there is an opening, preferablyin the form of a long slot, through which the odors and vapors from the cooking pass into the flue E.

The bath-room G is immediately behind the ventilating-flue in the kitchen. H indicates the position of the bath-tub, and I the watercloset. The flue E is partitioned off from the bath-room, and in this partition is a door, preferably of sheet-iron, to give access to the flue E and boiler, should repairs become necessary; and there are one or more openings, preferably at S, through this partition, for ventilating the bath-room or water closet or the pipe thereof.

The ventilating-flue E extends vertically to the roof, and is provided with a suitable cap or cover, that prevents rain beating into the same, but allows the free escape of the heated atmosphere and the odors and vapors that it contains; and it is to be understood thatin tenementhouses the devices described are provided at each story, and the one ventilating-flue is suiiicient for all the cooking-ranges, and water-closets, and bathrooms.

I claim as my invention 1. The jambs B, for receiving between them a cooking-range, and the flue E, behind the chimney-breast, and an opening over the range into the said flue E, in combination with the hot-water boiler placed within the flue E to warm the atmosphere therein and promote ventilation, substantially as set forth.

2. The jambs B B, adapted to receive between them the cooking-range, and the flue E, behind the chimney-breast, there being an opening above the cooking-range into said flue E, in combination with the hot-water boiler F, within the flue E, and a grating to support the boiler, substantially as set forth.

3. The jambs B B, between which the cooking-range is received, the flue D, for the escaping products of combustion, and the flue E, behind the breast, there being an opening into the same above the cooking-range, in combination with the hot-water boiler F, within the flue E, and acting to heat the air therein, the bath-room G, behind and adjoining the breast and chimney, and a partition having an opening between the bath-room and the flue E, substantially as set forth.
