(*Ci. 248-44) This invention relates to an improved mounting structure for supporting and holding vertical structures such as lamp posts, fiag poles and the like.
It is a standard construction technique to build a concrete pier which is embedded in the ground and then to provide a mounting structure which rests on the top of the pier. The art has generally lacked, however, an inexpensive, complete pole base assembly which facilitates automatic alignment of all anchorin parts when embedding the anchor bolts in the concrete pier with respect to the proper depth as well as being properly spaced in what is known in the trade as bolt circle.
It is one of the principal objects of the present invention to provide an improved mounting structure which is a complete assembly and rigidly secures a vertical structure on the end of the pier. An important feature of the present invention is that unlike previous constructions the present invention is a complete assembly adapted to tie the mounting structure directly to the anchor bolts or anchor studs which are set in the concrete pier, thus providing a more rigid connection with the pier eliminating the need for individual alignment of several parts which are needed in present methods.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide an inexpensive and readily usable adjusting means forming a part of the connection between the stud and mounting member whereby the mounting member can be leveled for proper mounting of a staff or other structural member therein.
Other objects and features of the present invention will become apparent from consideration of the following description, which proceeds with reference to the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the mounting structure;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the mounting structure as it is secured to the pier, the pole in the mounting structure being broken away; and
FIGURE 3 is a view taken on line 33 of FIGURE 2.
Referring now to the drawings, the mounting structure designated generally by reference numeral 16 includes a base plate 12'which lies flatly against upper surface 14 of a concrete pier 16 wherein are embedded four anchor pins 18 2t), 22, and 24 having transverse legs 26 which project inwardly to form a secure anchoring embedment within the pier 16. The anchor pins or studs cannot be easily pulled out of the pier, and they provide the positive connection between mounting structure and the concrete pier.
The ends 39 of each anchoring pin project vertically upwardly and extend through openings 32 of base plate 12. The anchor pins 1824 are secured to base plate 12 by means of a weld 31.
Along one side of the baseplate 12 are hinge cylinders or journal members 36 having openings 34 therein. The cylinders 36 are spaced apart sufiiciently to receive a further hinge cyiinder or journal members 38 therebetween. The cylinder 35 is secured to the base plate 12 by means of a weld 3? creating a complete assembly of the pole base to the anchor bolts. A hinge pin 42 passes through aligned openings in the cylinders 36, 38 so that mounting base 41 can swing between the vertical position shown in FfGURE 1 to that of FIGURE 2. It should be noted that the openings in the cylinders are slightly larger in diameter than the diameter of the hinge pins 42 so that the mounting base 4t is movable with respect to the base plate 12 to facilitate leveling, as hereinafter described.
Threadedly mounted on each of the threaded ends of the anchor bolts are mounting nuts 44 having washers or the like 46 (FIGURES l, 3) welded thereto, the upper surfaces of the washers 46 providing resting surfaces for the mounting base by directly engaging its undersurface 56. By adjusting one or the other of the nuts 44, it is possible to level the mounting base at its four corners thereby to insure a vertical positioning of the standard :32 (FIGURE 2) which may be a light pole, flag pole, antenna or the like.
The ends of the mounting studs pass through oversize openings 54 in the mounting base 40 and receive clamping nuts 56 which retain the mounting base 40 in its level position. The mounting base includes a socket 60 which is reinforced by spaced webs 62, and the standard or pole is clamped within the socket by means of a set screw 64. The mounting base is adapted to receive a number of di erent structures therein, all of which are rigidly and securely held in place once their end is fitted into the socket 6i and clamped by the set screw 64. Vibrations and other movements of the standard or pole are prevented by transferring such vibrations and other support loads arising from wind, or the like, directly from the mounting base 40 into the pier 10 through the direct connection of the mounting base 40 to the anchor or studs 1824.
If it should be needed to replace the standard or pole, set screw 64 is loosened and the bottom of the standard withdrawn from the socket 6i and replaced with a different standard. Adjustments in the vertical position of the standard can be easily effected by removing the standard, unthreading the nuts 56 and swinging the mounting base 40 into the position shown in FIGURE 1 and turning down or backing off necessary one or combination of the nuts 44 on the studs 18, 2t 22 and 24 and then returning the mounting base 40 and reclamping it with nuts 56 so that the standard 52 is made perpendicular in its mounted position or at whatever angle it is desired.
In the initial construction of the base, it is not necessary for the pier 16 to be exactly level, although it is made approximately so within the limitations of the fabricator or contractor. Between each of the nuts 56 and mounting plate 46 is a washer 74 which prevents the nuts from being drawn through the oversize openings and insures that the clamp- C) ing of the end of the stud to the mounting base is both strong and rigid.
Although the present invention has been illustrated and described in connection with a single example embodiment, it will be understood that this is illustrative of the invention and is by no means restrictive thereof. It is reasonable to be expected that those skilled in this art can make numerous revisions and adaptations of the invention, and it is intended that such revisions and adaptations will be included within the scope of the following claims as equivalents of the invention.
I claim:
1. A pole base assembly for a standard comprising, in combination: a base plate having a plurality of spaced anchor bolts secured thereto, a mounting base having a socket for receiving one end of the standard therein, means for clamping the standard within the socket, a base plate and mounting base connecting means including a hinge pin and a number of journal members having openings for receiving the hinge pin so that the mounting base is movable vertically with respect to the base plate, said anchor bolts having a threaded portion on their exposed ends for receiving securing nuts, said mounting base having spaced oversize openings for permitting the threaded portion of the anchor bolts to pass therethrough to effect a direct connection between the mounting base and the anchor bolts, and adjustment means mounted on the anchor bolts between the base plate and mounting base for leveling the mounting base.
2. A mounting for standards such as lighting fixtures, flags, and the like comprising a mounting base having openings therein, a socket mounted on said mounting base for receiving the foot of a standard, clamping means for retaining said standard within said socket, a base plate, means hingedly fastening said mounting base to said base plate, and a plurality of anchor rods attached to said base plate and projecting upwardly through said openings in said mounting base for effecting a direct connection therewith.
3. A base assembly for mounting standards compris ing a mounting base having openings therein arranged in a predetermined configuration, a socket mounted on said mounting base for receiving the bottom of a standard therein, means for clamping said bottom of said standard within said socket, a base plate providing a resting surface for said base assembly, means providing a hinge connection between said mounting base and said base plate, and a plurality of at least partially threaded anchor studs set in said base plate in substantially said configuration so that said studs extend upwardly through said openings in said mounting base to provide direct threaded connections between said mounting base and said anchor studs.
4. A base construction for mounting standards therein, comprising a mounting base having openings therein and having a socket for receiving the bottom of a standard therein, means for clamping said standard within said socket, a base plate providing a resting surface for said base construction, a hinge connecting said mounting base to said base plate, a plurality of anchor rods at least partially threaded and set in said base plate and extending upwardly through said openings in said mounting base to provide direct threaded connections between said mounting base and said anchor rods, and adjustment means threaded on said anchor rods for adjusting the relative spacing of said mounting base from said base plate.
5. An assembly comprising a mounting base having openings therein, a base plate, means for hingedly mounting said mounting base on said base plate, a plurality of rods adapted to be set in a holding material, said rods being fastened to said base plate and having anchoring portions extending below said base plate and having threaded portions extending upwardly from said base plate in a configuration to pass through said mounting base openings when said mounting base is swung toward said base plate, threaded support means positioned on said threaded portions of said rods to engage the undersurface of said mounting base and provide vertical support therefor, and threaded clamping means positioned on said threaded portions of said rods to engage the upper surface of said mounting base and hold said mounting base between said threaded support means and said threaded clamping means.
6. A pole base assembly for use with a concrete pier and the like comprising:
(a) a base plate adapted to rest on said concrete pier;
(b) a plurality of anchor members attached to said base plate in a predetermined configuration, each of said anchor members having a lower portion extending below said base plate that is adapted to be embedded and held in said pier, and each of said anchor members having an upper ortion extending above said base plate;
(c) a mounting base having a plurality of openings therethrough, said openings being positioned in substantially said predetermined configuration to substantially register with said predetermined configuration of said anchor members, and said openings being larger than the cross sectional dimensions of said anchor members;
(d) means fastening said mounting base to said base plate so that said mounting base openings respectively register with said anchor members, said fastening means permitting said mounting base to be moved toward and away from said base plate but preventing said mounting base from laterally moving with respect to said base plate;
(e) adjusting means mounted on each of said anchor members between said base plate and said mounting base for determining the spacing between said base plate and said mounting base at each of said anchor members;
(f) clamping means mounted on each of said anchor members above said mounting base for holding said mounting base against said adjusting means at each of said anchor members;
(g) and means fastened to the top of said mounting base for mounting a pole thereon.
7. The pole base assembly of claim 6 wherein said anchor members are respectively threaded along their upper portions, said adjusting means comprises threaded nuts with means having larger dimensions than said openings in said mounting base to revent the nuts from being pulled through the openings, and said clamping means comprise threaded nuts with means having larger dimensions than said openings in said mounting base to prevent the nuts from being pulled through the openings.
8. A pole base assembly for use with a concrete pier and the like comprising:
(a) a base plate adapted to rest horizontally on said concrete pier;
(b) said base plate having a plurality of vertical anchor members attached thereto in a predetermined configuration, each of said anchor members having a lower portion extending below said base plate and adapted to be embedded and held in said pier, and each of said anchor members having a threaded upper portion extending above said base plate;
(c) a mounting base having a plurality of openings therein, said openings being positioned in said predetermined configuration to substantially register with said predetermined configuration of the upper portions of said anchor members, and said openings being larger than the cross sectional dimensions of said upper portions of said anchor members;
(d) hinge means fastened to said mounting base and to said base plate to permit said mounting base to be pivoted toward and away from said base plate and to hold said mounting base against movement in horizontal directions relative to said base plate so that said mounting base openings register With and receive said upper portions of said anchor members;
(e) leveling nuts respectively threaded on each of said upper portions of said anchor members between said base plate and said mounting base for leveling said mounting base after said assembly is attached to said pier;
(f) clamping nuts threaded respectively on each of said upper portions of said anchor members above said leveling nuts for clamping said mounting base against said leveling nuts;
6 g) and socket means mounted on top of said mounting base for receiving said pole.

Claims (1)

1. A POLE BASE ASSEMBLY FOR A STANDARD COMPRISING, IN COMBINATION: A BASE PLATE HAVING A PLURALITY OF SPACED ANCHOR BOLTS SECURED THERETO, A MOUNTING BASE HAVING A SOCKET FOR RECEIVING ONE END OF THE STANDARD THEREIN, MEANS FOR CLAMPING THE STANDARD WITHIN THE SOCKET, A BASE PLATE AND MOUNTING BASE CONNECTING MEANS INCLUDING A HINGE PIN AND A NUMBER OF JOURNAL MEMBERS HAVING OPENINGS FOR RECEIVING THE HIONGE PIN SO THAT THE MOUNTING BASE IS MOVABLE VERTICALLY WITH RESPECT TO THE BASE PLATE, SAID ANCHOR BOLTS HAVING A THREADED PORTION ON THEIR EXPOSED ENDS FOR RECEIVING SECURING NUTS, SAID MOUNTING BASE HAVING SPACED OVERSIZE OPENINGS FOR PERMITTING THE THREADED PORTION OF THE ANCHOR BOLTS TO PASS THERETHROUGH TO EFFECT A DIRECT CONNECTION BETWEEN THE MOUNTING BASE AND THE ANCHOR BOLTS, AND ADJUSTMENT MEANS MOUNTED ON THE ANCHOR BOLTS BETWEEN THE BASE PLATE AND MOUNTING BASE FOR LEVELING THE MOUNTING BASE.
