WITNESSES 1.7V` VENTOR Attorney NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. i
MARTIN HENDRIOK, vOF JACKSON, GEORGIA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,325, dated November 10, 1885.
Application tiled April 8, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN HENDRIOK, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Butts and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates 'to improvements in plows of that class particularly known as half-shovel or turn77 plows, and is designed to produce a turn-shovel plow that will retain its shape till worn out.
The improvement consists in the employment of a steel bar, so rolled as to be thin on one edge and thick on the other, the bar being either gradually thinned from one edge to the other, or of equal thickness fora short distance, and then thinned. From this bar the turn-shovels are cut or stamped and curved to be properly secured to the plow-standard. rllhe lower end is beveled7 so that an enteringpoint is formed at the thicker side. The beveled edge is sharpened, so as to take the ground easily.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l represents a perspective View of the turn-shovel; Fig. 2, a perspective section of the steel bar before the turn-shovel is formed, and Fig. 3 a modification thereof.
A designates a turn-shovel having a thick edge, B, and a thin edge, O. The edge O is at its extreme upper corner a feather-edge, and graduallythiekens to near its point, where it is sharpened. The edge B is of the same thickness through its length, except at the point D, where it is sharpened. The edge E Serial No. 161.533. (No model.)
| is beveled to facilitate the entering of the plow into the ground, as stated. In Fig. 2 the bar is shown in the condition it leaves the rollingmill, and in Fig. 3 a modiiication thereof, showing the portion F of equal thickness and the portion G thinned. The plow is curved somewhat both laterally and longitudinally, so that it may be brought into proper relation to the ground.
It will be readily seen that as the point is worn, if the plow were of one thickness its contour would soon be lost, while by thinning it as, described, the wearing is proportionally plow, the said plow or turn-shovel retaining nearly if not quite its original shape, and thus can be used till too short for successful operation.
The plow requires from a quarter to a third less material than those of various approved patterns, and will last as long and require much less sharpening.
I claim- A turn-shovel for plows, having one side or edge of an equal thickness throughout, except at the point where it is sharpened, :a thin side or edge opposite the same, and a beveled entering-edge extending from one side to the other, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN HNiDEIoK.
