3 Claims. (Cl. 229-51) This invention relates to an improvement in ice cream carton and deals particularly with a carton which may be filled from the end in the conventional manner and which may be readily opened up in the manner of a trunk style carton for the dispensing of the contents.
For many years ice cream has been usually sold in generally rectangular end opening packages which are of greater height than width or thickness. During recent years when the use of home freezers has become customary, the sale of half gallon packages of ice cream has increased. When the half gallons of ice cream are sold in the conventional types of cartons, it is difficult to remove all of the ice cream with a spoon or similar utensil due to the depth of the carton. It is an object of the present invention to provide a carton adapted to obtain a half gallon of the product, which can be filled from the end in a conventional manner, and which may be opened up in a manner to form a closure in one of the larger panels so that the contents may be more readily dispensed.
A further feature of the present invention resides in the provision of a rectangular carton which requires little more paperboard than the conventional rectangular carton, and which may be closed in a manner to form a readily reclosable carton structure.
These and other objects and novel features of the present invention will he more clearly and fully set forth in the following specification and claims.

The carton A illustrated in FIGURES 14 of the drawings includes a front wall panel 10, a bottom panel 11, a rear wall panel 12, and a top panel 13 which are foldably connected along parallel fold lines 14, 15 and 16. A front cover flap 17 is hingedly connected to the front wall panel 13 along a fold line 19. Cover side flaps 26 are foldably connected along opposite sides of the top panel 13 along parallel fold lines 21 which intersect the previously described fold lines at right angles. Corner flaps 22 are hingedly connected to the ends of the cover front flap 17 along extensions of the fold lines 21.
End walls 23 or end closure flaps are hingedly connected to the bottom panel 11 along parallel fold lines which are generally extensions of the fold lines 21 but which may be inwardly offset slightly to simplify the formation of the carton end walls. The flaps 23 are the full area of the ends of the carton so as to form full closure panels. Closure flaps 24 are hingedly connected to the ends of the rear wall panel 21 and similar flaps 25 are foldably connected to the ends of the front wall 10. The flaps 24 are of proper length to overlap one another.
In preferred form a generally rectangular area 26 of heat actuated adhesive are printed on the front wall flaps 25 in the areas thereof which overlap the flaps 24 when the carton is closed. Areas 27 of heat activated adhesive are also printed upon the inner surfaces of the cover side flaps 2% in the areas thereof which overlap the corner flaps 22 when the carton is closed. By applying heat to the ends of the carton, the corner flaps 22 may be sealed to the cover side fiaps 20, and the front and rear wall end closure flaps 24 and 25 may be sealed in overlapping relation outwardly of the full size panels 23.
In preferred form, the cover front flap 17 is provided with a series of parallel embossed crease lines 2% which have a tendency to space the lower edge of the flap 17 from the front panel 10 when the flap 17 is glued to the front panel 10. Normally, spots of adhesive 30 located between the score lines 29 and the fold line 19 are used to attach the front cover flap 17 to the front wall. A zigzag cut score line 31 extends across the front panel 11 in spaced relation to the end of the blank, and the spots of adhesive are located between the zig-zag cut score line 31 and the upper edge of the front Wall 1.0 when the carton is glued in tubular form. This arrangement permits the outer surface of the front panel to peel off readily when the carton is opened if the adhesive is bonded sufficiently not to come loose when the carton is opened.
When the carton is glued in tubular form as shown in FIGURE 3, the carton may be opened up or squared up in the usual manner, and one end of the carton may then be closed. This is accomplished by first folding the full size flaps 2.3 into right angular relation to the bottom panel 11, forming the end closing flaps 2-4 to overlie the bottom closure flaps 23, and then folding the rear wall closing flaps 25 into overlapping relation with the ends of the fiaps .24. As the flaps 25 are folded downwardly, the overlying corner flaps 22 are also folded downwardly to overlie the flaps 25. The flaps 26 are then folded downwarclly to overlie the fiaps 22 and portions of the flaps 24 and 25. Heat is applied to connect the flaps 24 and 25 in overlapping relation, and also to connect the cover front flap 17 to the cover side flaps 20 by attaching the corner flaps 22 and the side cover flaps 29.
When the carton has been filled and closed, it may be opened by grasping the edge of the cover front flap 1'7 or inserting a knife or similar instrument between the front panel 10 and the flap 17 to sever the areas of adhesive 31 The cover panel, together with its front and side flaps may then be opened up in the manner illustrated in FIGURE 2 of the drawings for the easy dispensing of the carton contents.
The carton B is in many ways preferable to the carton A although includes slightly more paperboard. The carton B includes a front panel 4i), a bottom panel 41, a rear wall 42, and a top panel 43 which are connected together along parallel lines of fold 44, 45, and 46. A cover front flap indicated in general by the numeral 47 is connected to the forward edge of the top panel 43 along a fold line 49. The cover front flap 47 is divided into three sections by a pair of parallel weakened lines of separation 5t and 51 which define a removable tear strip portion 52 therebetween. This arrangement provides an upper portion 53 which forms a part of the carton lid when the tear strip 52 is removed, and provides a marginal anchoring portion 54 which is adhered to the front panel 41 when the carton is glued in tubular form.
The cover 43 is also provided with a pair of cover side flaps 55 which are of approximately the same width as the upper portion 53 of the cover front flap 47. Corner flaps 56 are hinged to the ends of the upper flat portion 53 and are designed to seal in face contact to the top side flaps 55 connected to the cover panel 43 along parallel fold lines 57. For this purpose, areas 59 of E-activated 3 adhesive are usually printed on the surfaces of the cover side flaps 55 on the area thereof which overlaps the corner flaps 56. The bottom panel 41 is hingedly connected to end panels or end wall flaps 60 which are substantially of the cross sectional area of the ends of the carton so as to form a full closure. End closure flaps 61 are hingedly connected to the ends of the rear wall 42 While end flaps 62 are hingedly connected to the ends of the front wall 40. The flaps 60, 61, and 62 are connected to their various panels along fold lines which are generally aligned with the fold lines 57 which might be slightly offset therefrom to compensate for the thickness of the flaps forming the enclosures. The flaps 61 and 62 are of proper length to overlap, and the flaps 62 are provided with areas 64 of adhesive which is activated by heat.
The carton B is formed into tubular relation by adhering the surface of the anchoring portion 54 of the cover front flap structure 47 to the front carton wall 40. In use, one carton end is normally sealed closed, the carton filled, and the other end closed. In doing this, the end flaps 60 of the bottom panel are folded upwardly into right angular relation to the panel 41, and end flaps 61 and 62 are then folded into overlapping relation. During this operation, the corner flaps 56 are folded to overlie the end flaps 62, and the cover side flaps 55 are folded to overlie the corner flaps 56. Heat, high frequency current, or the like is applied to activate the adhesive areas 59 and 64 and to cause the ends to seal.
When the cartonis to be opened, one end of the tear strip 52 is grasped, and this tear strip is removed leaving the anchoring area 54 adhered to the front panel of the carton. The carton thus formed has a hinged lid which may be readily seen in FIGURE 6 of the drawings, and the contents of the carton may be Wholly or partially removed. The arrangement is such that the lid may be readily reclosed to form a good closure.
In accordance with the patent statutes, the principles of construction and operation of this improvement in ice cream cartons have been described, and while an endeavor has been made to set forth the best embodiment thereof, it should be understood that changes may be made Within the scope of the following claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
We claim:
1. A generally rectangular carton for ice cream and the like including:
(a) a front wall, bottom wall, rear wall and top wall hingedly connected in series,
(b) end flaps hingedly connected to the bottom wall and extending upwardly therefrom substantially the full height of the front and rear walls,
(c) end flaps secured to the ends of the front and rear walls and secured in overlapping relation outwardly of said bottom wall end flaps,
(d) a substantially fiat, generally rectangular, cover front flap overlying the upper portion of the front wall and having points of attachment substantially throughout its length adhesively connected to the forward edge of the top wall,
(e) cover side flaps secured to the ends of said top wall and overlying said overlapped end flaps,
(f) corner flaps having adhesive areas securing the ends of said cover flap and the forward ends of said cover side flaps,
(g) said corner flaps hinged to the ends of said cover front flap and underlying said cover side flaps, I
(h) said cover front flap having inwardly embossed areas beneath the said points of attachment extending toward said front wall and spacing the lower edge of said cover front wall flap from said front wall,
(-i) said embossed areas corresponding generally in length to the length of said cover front flap.
2. The structure of claim 1 and in which a cut score line extends across said front wall beneath the said points of attachment of said cover front flap to the upper portion of the front wall.
3. The structure of claim 1 and in which said adhesive areas include heat activatable adhesive.

Claims (1)

1. A GENERALLY RECTANGULAR CARTON FOR ICE CREAM AND THE LIKE INCLUDING: (A) A FRONT WALL, BOTTOM WALL, REAR WALL AND TOP WALL HINGEDLY CONNECTED IN SERIES, (B) END FLAPS HINGEDLY CONNECTED TO THE BOTTOM WALL AND EXTENDING UPWARDLY THEREFROM SUBSTANTIALLY THE FULL HEIGHT OF THE FRONT AND REAR WALLS, (C) END FLAPS SECURED TO THE ENDS OF THE FRONT AND REAR WALLS AND SECURED IN OVERLAPPING RELATION OUTWARDLY OF SAID BOTTOM WALL END FLAPS, (D) A SUBSTANTIALLY FLAT, GENERALLY RECTANGULAR, COVER FRONT FLAP OVERLYING THE UPPER PORTION OF THE FIRST WALL AND HAVING POINTS OF ATTACHMENT SUBSTANTIALLY THROUGHOUT ITS LENGTH ADHESIVELY CONNECTED TO THE FORWARD EDGE OF THE TOP WALL, (E) COVER SIDE FLAPS SECURED TO THE ENDS OF SAID TOP WALL AND OVERLYING SAID OVERLAPPED END FLAPS, (F) CORNER FLAPS HAVING ADHESIVE AREAS SECURING THE ENDS OF SAID COVER FLAP AND THE FORWARD ENDS OF SAID COVER SIDE FLAPS, (G) SAID CORNER FLAPS HINGED TO THE ENDS OF SAID COVER FRONT FLAP AND UNDERLYING SAID COVER SIDE FLAPS, (H) SAID COVER FRONT FLAP HAVING INWARDLY EMBOSSED AREAS BENEATH THE SAID POINTS OF ATTACHMENT EXTENDING TOWARD SAID FRONT WALL AND SPACING THE LOWER EDGE OF SAID COVER FRONT WALL FLAP FROM SAID FRONT WALL, (I) SAID EMBOSSED AREAS CORRESPONDING GENERALLY IN LENGTH TO THE LENGTH OF SAID COVER FRONT FLAP.
