UNITED STATES PATENT met.
HENRY U. MORSE AND H. A. MORSE, OF CANTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN TOBACCO- CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 32,64), dated June 21'), 1861.
To coZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY U. Monsn and HERBERT A. MoRsE, of Canton, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Machine for Cutting Tobacco, &c.;and we do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 denotes a side elevation, Fig; 2 a rear elevation, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of our said machine. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the knife-carrier, taken so as to show its two curved racks.
The nature of our invention consists in an improved machine for cutting tobacco, the
combination and, arrangement of its several parts operating to give to the knife not only a parallel but a drawing stroke, whereby greater power and less strain upon the knife are obtained, the said parts being two curved racks and two toothed sectors, (or their equivalents,) a stationary and a movable cam, and their rests or guides, combined and arranged with the lever, the frame, and the knife-carrier, and so as to operate as described.
In the drawings, A denotes the bed or table on which the tobacco or article to be out is to be placed, the said table having a vertical slotted frame, B, (which carries the operative parts of the apparatus) extended upward from its top surface. "Within the said frame Bthe knife-carrier G is disposed, the same having a knife, 0 secured to it by screws or in any other proper manner. The top surface of the said knife-carrier is curved, and has two racks, to a, formed and arranged upon it in manner as shown in Fig. 4.
To the front and rear ends of the top part of the frame B two toothed sectors, b b, are j ointed or pivoted by means of two pins, 0 c, the latter sectorviz., bforn1ing one end of the lever D. The front end of the said knife-earrier is constructed with a movable incline or cam, H, to operate in conjunction with a stationary rest or guide. I, formed on the frame A, as shown in the drawings. The rear part of the said knife-carrier hasarest, T, the same consisting oftwo studs extending transversely from it, and being so formed as to slide freely on the stationary cam or incline 1 when such knife may be put in operation.
By the above-described mechanism for operating the knife, it can be worked to excellent advantage and with great power, particularly when used in cutting tobacco or any other hard material of like character,
\Ve do not claim, broadly, causing a knife to operate or cut with a drawing stroke while descending into an object; but
\Ve claim An improved tobacco-cutter as constructed with two curved racks, to a, the two toothed sectors 1) b, and the stationary and movable cams H 1 and rests T 1, arranged and combined with the lever D, frame B, and the knife-carrier O, and so as to operate substan tially as described.
HENRY U. MORSE. HERBERT A. MORSE.
