L. N. WHITE.
NUT LOCK.
,I ggg:
l UNITED 4STATES PATENT OEEICE.D
i LUTHER N. WHITFIYOF COLUMBIA CITY, ASSIGNOR- OF ONE-HALF TO WILL- l IAM W. WORTHINGTON AND ROBERT O. BELL, OF FOET WAYNE, IND.
NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 326,076, dated September 8, 1885` Application sind Jun@ 1r, lees. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern: i r
Be it known that I, LUTHER N. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Columbia City, in the county of Whitley and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure lis a longitudinal vertical sectional view of abolt equipped with myimproved nntlock. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the locknut detached from the bolt. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the lock-nut, taken on the line w a: in Fig.2. Fig. 4 isasectional View ofthe lock-nut, taken on the liney y in Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a view illustrating several different forms of friction-'rollers to be used in connection with my improved nut-lock.
rIhe sameletters referto the same parts in all the figures.
This invent-ion relates to nut-locks; and it consists in certain improvements on the device for which application for Letters Patent of the United States was filed by me on the 30th day ofApril, 1885, Serial No. 164,018. The said invention may be briefly described as consist n ing of a lock-nut having beveled or inclined recesses, in which are seated serrated rollers adapted to bear against the face of the washer, and thereby to prevent the nut from turning back after it has been once properly tightened up against the washer.
My present invention has for its object, first, to so improve the construction that the rollers shall not be lost out of their respective recesseswhile the nut is being adjusted upon the bolt Without employing extraneous matter to effect this result; second, to so improve the construction of the rollers that they may be manufactured more conveniently and at less expense than those which have been shown in my application above referred to.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter In the drawings hereto annexed, A desig nates the bolt, B the washer, and C the nut, which latter is provided on its inner face with one or more beveled or inclined recesses, D D,
arranged between the sides and the central opening of the said nut.
F F are the friction-rollers, which are made of such a length as to fit neatly and yet to revolve freely inthe recesses D D. Said friction-rollers are made polygonal in shape, with iive or more sides, as shown, respectively, at F', F2, and F3 in Fig. 5of the drawings; or one or more of their sides may be rounded, as shown at F4 and F5 in Fig. 5. These frictionrollers, having been placed in their respective recesses, are retained in position by slightly upsetting the metal in front of the said rollers, which may be done by forming small indentations I I, by means of an ordinary punch or pointed instrument, adjoining the sides ofthe recesses D D,the sides of which are thereby upset, so as to form small lugs or projections E E directly in front of the rollers F F, which latter are thereby held with a sufficient degree of security to prevent their being dropped out in the act of adjusting thel nut upon'the bolt for operation, yet in such a manner that they shall be readily released by frictional contact with the Washer when the nut shall be turned in areverse direction upon the bolt.
It is obvious that the serrated rollers shown and described in my application above referred to may be used ih connection with this invention, when preferred, and I have in Fig. 5 of the drawings, at F6, shown an example of one of these rollers.
The operation of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, without requiring any extended explanation. When the nut is screwed up against the washer, the edges of the rollers which project beyond the inner face of the nut will bite against the outer face of the Washer and` slightly enter the latter. Any
tendency of the nut to turn back or in a reverse direction will cause the rollers to move in an upward direction in their respective slots, and thus tighten and bind the nut upon the bolt and prevent its coming off.
It is obvious that instead of applying the rollers to the inner faceiof the nut, as herein described, they might with equal efficiency be applied to the outer face of the washer, which would in this case be provided with the recesses D D, in which the rollers Would be seated and held in precisely the manner above described. The lugs EE, for holding and retaining the rollers temporarily, might also be formed differently than by upsetting the metal, as herein described; and in View of these facts I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein shown and described, but reserve to myself the right to all modifications which may be resorted to iyvithout departing from the spirit of my invenion.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a nut-lock, the combination of a nut the inner face of which is provided with one or more beveled or inclined recesses, frictionrollers seated in the said recesses, and lugs or l projections formed upon the sides of said rei' cesses and serving to retain the said frictionrollers securely while the nut is being adj usted upon the bolt, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. In a nut-Jock, the combination, with a nut provided on its inner face with inclined or beveled recesses, of friction-rollers seated in the said recesses, said friction-rollers being mainly polygonal in shape, but with one or more rounded sides, if desired, and lugs or projections formed upon the inner sides of the said recesses and serving to retain the said rollers in position while the nut is being adj usted upon the bolt, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto afliXed my signature in presence of two Witnesses. f
LUTHER N. WHITE.
