This invention relates to improvements in garment construction and more particularly to a multi-purpose garment adapted to be used to protect and give greater comfort to the wearer in inclement weather.

In previous rnulti-purpose inclement weather garments of the general type described herein, it has been the general practice to provide only a single piece construction of such configuration that made the garment highly restricted in the ease and practicality of use. It is the general nature of this invention to provide a structure wherein separable protective members are attached to a carrying enclosure so that either of the members can be used individually, or the two can be used together, or the upper member can be entirely separated from the lower member and carrying enclosure if desired. It is also within the general nature of this invention to provide an improved single piece garment of improved design to provide the wearer a greater ease of mobility with a resulting greater practicability of use.

The primary object of this invention is the provision of an improved protective garment to be worn over ordinary clothing having separable upper and lower members that may be used individually or separately while yet being fastened to a carrying enclosure.

Another object of this invention is the provision of an improved protective garment having a bottom member formed with leg portions to provide greater mobility to the wearer.

Another object of this invention is the provision of an improved protective garment having a carrying enclosure that provides a case for the garment when not in use, and when the arment is in use the carrying enclosure may be used as a protective seat for the wearer.

Another object of this invention is the provision of an improved protective garment that has extreme ease of use and is of simple and economical manufacture.

Further aims, objects and advantages of this invention will appear from a consideration of the following description and the accompanying drawings showing for purely illustrative purposes embodiments of this invention. It is to be understood, however, that the description is not to be taken in a limiting sense, the scope of the invention being defined in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures, the configuration of the entire garment when being worn may best be seen by referring to FIGURE 4 wherein the garment in its entirety is represented by the numeral 20 and comprises an upper member 21 and lower member 22. The upper and lower members 21, 22 are constructed to be quite full in appearance in order that a person wearing the garment may have maximum freedom of movement. The uppermost portion of member, or cape 21 tapers inwardly from the sides to form a hood 23 adapted to encompass the wearers head and upper shoulders. Within the hood 23 is a face opening 24- conforming to the natural outlines of the human face and terminating in the lower region at a slide fastener 25 that is adapted to close the front of the garment at the seam, generally indicated by 26.

The slide fastener 25, or zipper as it is more commonly called, and the seam 26 extend to a low point 27 as seen in FIGURE 7 to form a front opening cape 21. Such a construction allows the person wanting to wear the garment to put it about his body and head in the manner of a normal cape and then engage the zipper 25 at low point 27 to permit sliding the zipper 25 upwardly to its fully closed position.

The lower member 22, as seen in the embodiment of FIGURE 4, has a sack-like appearance that loosely fits about the wearers legs and generally extends high enough upon the wearer to be covered in the wearers lap by upper member 21 as is shown in FIGURE 5 by numeral 28- Extending down the frontal length of lower member 22 is a zipper track 29 to provide easy access to the lower member 22 whereby upon opening the zipper track 29 to bottom point 31, one may easily step into lower member 22.

To provide a convenient means to carry and to store the garment 20, a bag 32 is provided as seen in FIG- URES 13. Bag 32 comprises bag halves 33-, '34 each of which mount, around three periphery sides, one-half of the complete track of zipper 35, which zipper halves are numerically designated as 35a for bag half 33 and 35b for bag half 34. As seen in FIGURE 1 the bag 32 is in a closed carrying position with the garment 20 suitably placed therein. At the junction of bag halves 33, 34 at fold line 36, there is aflixed centrally to the bag 32 a suitable carrying handle 37 of soft and pliable material. Along the inside of the bag 32 at the fold line 36, the lower member 22 is attached to the bag 32 by stitching a portion of the rear periphery of the lower member 22 along fold line 36, thus it is not possible that lower mem- 3 ber 22 will become disengaged from the bag 32 and be lost.

In FIGURE the method of securing the various members of the garment together is seen wherein upper member 21 is detachably connected to the bag 32, and more specifically to bag half 34, by straps 38a, 38b affixed at 39a, 3%, respectively, to the inwardly facing lower flap portion 41 of upper member 21 wherein the straps 38a, 38b depend downwardly adjacent to the inside lower flap portion 41 and outwardly of bag half 33 and thence under the rearwardmost portion of bag half 34 where the straps 38a, 38b are secured to bag half 34 by buttons 42a, 42b respectively.

To accomplish such a convenient relationship with the bag 32 and upper member 21, and to position the aforementioned members for use, the upper portion 21 would be placed upon the person to wear the garment and then the bag 32 would be folded inside out along fold line 36 and placed under the wearer, as seen in FIGURE 5, to provide a protective seat. In such a position the lower member 22 would be exposed for use since it is aflixed to the inside of bag 32 substantially along fold line 36 as designated by numeral 43. If it is desired to use only the upper member 21, then the lower member 22 could be left in a folded manner upon bag half 33 of bag 32 to provide extra seat cushion support.

A second embodiment of the lower member 22, as indicated by numeral 44, is shown in FIGURE 8 as having downwardly extending leg portions 45, 46 into which a person wearing the lower member 44 would place his feet and legs" as if putting on a normal pair of trousers. Normally the bottoms 47, 48 of the leg portions 45, 46 would be closed to protect the feet of the person wearing the garment against the elements, but it is anticipated that the bottoms could be open to provide greater mobility. Extending downwardly from the upper periphery 49 of garment 44 to the crotch 51 is zipper 52 which is attached to draw together the loosely fitting waist portion of the lower portion 44. By the provision of zipper 52 the ease of accessibility to the lower member 44 is greatly enhanced. Lower member 44 is adapted to be connected to bag 32 in a manner similar to lower member 22 in that a suitable length, as indicated at 43', of the rear periphery of lower member 44 as attached to the bag 32 by suitable stitching along fold line 36. By the provision of the embodiment of lower member 44 a greater degree of mobility may be achieved by the person wearing the garment since the leg portions 45, 46 allow the person wearing the garment to move about in a normal manner.

A one piece embodiment of the garment proposed by this invention is shown in FIGURE 9 having a head member 54, a cape 55, and a seat 56 connecting the cape 55 to low-er member 57. The head member 54 contains a zipper 58 adapted to slide on tracks 59a, 59b to draw the upper portion of the head member together thereby forming a hood over the head of the person wearing the garment. By sliding the zipper 58 along the zipper tracks 59a, 59b to the end of the tracks, it can be seen that such an aforementioned hood will result leaving an opening in the lower portion of the head member for the face.

Around the curved peripheral portion of cape 55 are mounted zipper track halves 63a, 63b, and a zipper 64 which, when engaged in tracks 63a, 63b and moved along the tracks will form a closed cape member about the person desiring to wear the garment.

Around the circular lower portion 57 are mounted zipper tracks 65a, 65b which are adapted to receive zipper 66 in order that a person wearing the garment, after having taken a seated position on seat 56, may draw the sides of the lower member 57 around his legs and move zipper 66 along the tracks 65a, 65b to substantially close the lower member 57 about his legs and lap to obtain protection from the weather.

To fold the one piece embodiment of the garment of FIGURE 9 into its self-contained bag, which is similar in appearance to FIGURE 1, the outer edges of cape 55 are folded inwardly, as seen in FIGURE 10, toward the center of the cape along fold lines 67 and 68 and in a like manner the outer edges of the lower member 57 are like-wise folded inwardly toward the center of the garment along fold lines 67, 68. Then the head member 54 is folded downwardly over the cape 55 along fold line 69 to form the substantial rectangle as shown in FIGURE 10. Then a portion of the folded cape 55 and the entire head member 54 is folded downwardly to the center of the garment along fold line 71 and the lower member 57 is folded upwardly toward the center of the garment along fold line 72 and thence the entire mass is folded about fold line 73. The peripheral zipper 74 then is positioned to engage track halves 75a, 75b and move around the track halves to produce a carrying bag 76, as shown in FIGURE 11, having panel members 33, 34 and handle 37'. It is to be noted that track halves 75a, 75b are stitched in part to the seat 56 and in part to the reverse sides of cape 55 and reverse side of lower member 57 and further, that a portion of the track halves 75a, 75b in effect form the fold lines 71 and 72.

From the above description there is shown a distinct improvement in multi-purpose garment construction for inclement weather use and especially in a garment wherein separate protective members are attached to a carrying enclosure so that either of the members can be used individually, or the two can be used together, or the upper member can be entirely separated from the lower member and carrying enclosure if desired.

Various modifications may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, and it is desired, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereon as are imposed by the prior art and are set forth in the appended claims.

What is claimed is: v

1. A protective outer garment comprising a body enveloping cape portion, a hood formed integrally with said cape portion, an elongated leg enveloping portion adapted to be worn about the lower extremities of the wearer, seat means comprising a substantially rectangular member, a fold line transverse to the longitudinal length of said seat means dividing said seat means into two bag halves, means to detachably interconnect said cape portion to said seat means, said leg enveloping portion being connected to said fold line of said seat means remote from the point at which said cape portion is detachably connected to said seat means, said cape portion and said leg portion each adapted to be folded within a respective bag half, a slide fastener track half extending around the outer periphery of each bag half, a slide fastener adapted to engage said track halves and move therearound, whereby when said cape portion and said leg portion are folded within said respective bag halves and said slide fastener is moved around said slide fastener track halves said bag halves are drawn together to form a carrying enclosure for said cape portion and said leg portion.

2. In a protective outer garment, the combination recited in claim 1 wherein said cape portion further comprises a rear lower flap member and said means to detachably interconnect said cape portion to said seat means being associated with said rear lower fiap.

In a protective outer garment, the combination recited in claim 2 wherein said means to detachably interconnect said cape portion to said seat means comprises a plurality of straps, .each .of said straps being attached to said rear lower flap member and downwardly extending therefrom and having at least one aperture therein, fastening means attached to said bag half adapted to receive said folded cape portion for engaging said aperture, whereby when said aperture engages said fastening means the cape portion is interconnected with the seat means and said leg enveloping portion to form a unitary garment.

Claims (1)

1. A PROTECTIVE OUTER GARMENT COMPRISING A BODY ENVELPOING CAPE PORTION, A HOOD FORMED INTEGRALLY WITH SAID CAPE PORTION, AN ELONGATED LEG ENVELOPING PORTION ADAPTED TO BE WORN ABOUT THE LOWER EXTREMITIES OF THE WEARER, SEAT MEANS COMPRISING A SUBSTANTIALLY RECTANGULAR MEMBER, A FOLD LINE TRANSVERSE TO THE LONGITUDINAL LENGTH OF SAID SEAT MEANS DIVIDING SAID SEAT MEANS INTO TWO BAG HALVES, MEANS TO DETACHABLY INTERCONNECT SAID CAPE PORTION TO SAID SEAT MEANS, SAID LEG ENVELOPING PORTTION BEING CONNECTED TO SAID FOLD LINE OF SAID SEAT MEANS REMOTE FROM THE POINT AT WHICH SAID CAPE PORTION IS DETACHABLY CONNECTED TO SAID SEAT MEANS, SAID CAPE PORTION AND SAID LEG PORTION EACH ADAPTED TO BE FOLDED WITHIN A RESPECTIVE BAG HALF, A SLIDE FASTENER TRACK HALF EXTENDING AROUND THE OUTER PERIPHERY OF EACH BAG HALF, A SLIDE FASTENER ADAPTED TO ENGAGE SAID TRACK HAVLES AND MOVE THEREAROUND, WHEREBY WHEN SAID CAPE PORTION AND SAID LEG PORTION ARE FOLDED WITHIN SAID RESPECTIVE BAG HALVES AND SAID SLIDE FASTENER IS MOVED AROUND SAID SLIDE FASTENER TRACK HAVLES SAID BAG HALVES ARE DRAWN TOGETHER TO FORM A CARRYING ENCLOSURE FOR SAID CAPE PORTION AND SAID LEG PORTION.
