PATIO LIGHT AND SPEAKER COMBINATION Filed Dec. 23, 1963 W 13% M 2w: III/I INVENTOR. ORV/ALE 6. 14451.46
"ATTORNEYS United States Patent Oil ice 3,194,952 Patented July 13, 1965 3,194,952 PATIO LIGHT AND SPEAKER COMBINATION Orville C. Wells, Bonner Springs, Kans., assignor to Drive-In Theatre Mfg. Co., Inc., Edwardsville, Kans., a corporation of Missouri Filed Dec. 23, 1963, Ser. No. 332,778 7 Claims. (Cl. 240-2) This invention relates to a combination loud speaker and lamp, and more particularly to a lamp of this character adaptable for use on patios and the like.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character having a speaker above the light and a protective hood above the speaker serving as a downward reflector for both the light rays and sound waves wherein both light and sound will extend out 360 degrees from the support.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a post for supporting the light and speaker combination, said pole having an upper end on which is mounted a fitting having a top provided with an opening for a light socket; to provide a globe member of cylindrical shape for the light mounted therein on top of the fitting; to provide a loud speaker mounted in the top of said globe; to provide spaced elongated posts on the fitting having ends threaded into threaded bores in said fitting; to provide spacing members on said elongated posts and supporting brackets carried by said posts for engaging the speaker and holding the same in place; to provide a reflecting hood above the speaker and held thereabove by said posts; to provide electrical cords to said light and speaker, and to provide a device of this character which is simple and economical to manufacture and is etficient in use.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein are set forth by way of illustration and example certain embodiments of this invention.
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of my combination speaker and lamp.
FIG. 2 is an enlarged vertical cross-sectional fragmentary view thereof.
FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional plan view taken on a line 3-3, FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view particularly illustrating the post bracket members and spacers for mounting the speaker and translucent cylinder.
FIG. 5 is an exploded view similar to FIG. 4 but showing the various parts slightly separated.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:
The numeral 1 designates a structure consisting of a combination loud speaker and light embodying the features of my invention which is particularly adaptable for use on patios and the like. The structure 1 has a pole or post 2 of tubular formation as shown in FIG. 2. The lower end of the post 2 may be embedded in the ground as indicated at 3 or it may be mounted on a patio at 4 in any suitable manner. Mounted on the upper end 5 of the post 2 is a tubular fitting 6 secured to the post by spaced setscrews or the like. The upper portion of the fitting 6 is enlarged and slightly globe-shaped portion as indicated at 8 and has a top 9 provided with an opening 10. The top 9 is recessed slightly as indicated at 11 (FIG. 2) for receiving a plate 12 also having a central opening 13 for receiving a socket 14 for a light bulb 15. The socket has wires 16 and 17 leading through the post to a source of electrical supply (not shown).
The rim 18 of the globe-shaped portion 8 of the fitting 6 is provided with spaced threaded bore openings 19 for receiving the threaded ends of a plurality of spaced elongated screws 21. Tubular spacing members 22 are provided on the elongated screws 21. A translucent cylindrical globe 23 has its lower end resting on the plate 12 and is of a length equal to the tubular spacers 22. Bracket members 24 are mounted on the elongated posts 21 for supporting a loud speaker 25, said speaker having a substantial portion thereof extending inwardly of the translucent cylinder 23 as shown in FIG. 2. Tubular spacers 26 are provided on the screws 21 above the spacers 26 and have arms 28 thereof provided with a downward extending lug 29 for engaging over the rim 30 of the speaker 25 as best illustrated in FIG. 4. The brackets 24 have arms 24' which engage the underside 30' of the rim 30 of the speaker to hold the speaker in place.
Tubular spacers 31 are provided on the elongated posts 21 above the brackets 27 and mounted thereon is a domeshaped hood or reflecting member 32 having openings 33 through which the posts 21 extend. The posts 21 have heads 34 and the lower ends of said posts are threaded as indicated at 35 providing a secure fitting to hold the parts in assembled relation. The speaker 25 is provided with electric wires 36 and 37 which also extend downwardly through any one of four holes 37 in the plate member 12 and through the fitting member 6 and into the post to a source of electrical supply (not shown) as illustrated in FIG. 2.
With the arrangement and assembly just above described the loud speaker 25 is protected from rain and the elements, and sound projected therefrom will be distributed outwardly and downwardly 360 degrees so it will be possible to have a low volume even distribution output. This is advantageous over a directional speaker which varies in output intensity directionally therefrom. The light will provide illumination and also generate some heat to evaporate any moisture which may collect on the speaker.
It is to be understood that while I have illustrated and described one form of my invention, it is not to be limited to the specific form or arrangement of parts herein described and shown except insofar as such limitations are included in the claims.
