EXTERNAL COVER FOR AIR CONDITIONER UNITS Filed Aug. 31, 1960 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR. ISRAEL KOPS A TTO/PA/EY United States Patent Ofice 3,128,007 Patented Apr. 7, 1964 3,128,007 EXTERNAL COVER FOR AIR CONDITIONER UNITS Israel Kops, 1025 E. 55th St., Brooklyn, N.Y. Filed Aug. 31, 1960, Ser. No. 53,146 1 Claim. (Cl. 220-41) This invention concerns a cover for an air conditioner unit.
The cover embodying the invention is adapted to protect the unit during periods when it is not in use. The cover may be formed as an attachment to a cabinet or casing of the air conditioner. The cover receives one or more slidable, removable panels which close louvers or openings in one or more sides of the air conditioner unit.
It is therefore one object of the invention to provide a cover for an air conditioner unit adapted to be attached to a cabinet or casing of the air conditioner and to receive a slidable, removable panel.
A further object is to provide a frame attachable to a cabinet of an air conditioner unit and provided with channels for receiving panels to close openings in the cabinet.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of an air conditioner unit with a cover thereon embodying the invention, the panel being shown partially open.
FIG. 2 is a front view of the cover per se, the panel being omitted.
FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a top plan view of the cover of FIG. 2.
FIG. 5 is a front view on a reduced scale of the cover with the panel in place.
FIG. 6 is a side view of the cover of FIG. 5.
FIG. 7 is an exploded perspective view of an air conditioner cover embodying a modified form of the invention.
FIG. 8 is a perspective view of still another air conditioner unit and a further modified cover with a portion of a removal panel broken away.
FIG. 9 is a perspective view of an air conditioner unit and cover embodying a further modification of the invention with a portion of a removable panel broken away.
FIG. 10 is a perspective view of a filter element useful in the invention.
Referring to FIGS. 1-6, there is shown an improved rectangular cover 10 for an air conditioner unit 12 having a rectangular cabinet or casing 14 with a front wall 16 formed with louvers 18. The cover 10 includes a rectangular frame having a rectangular opening 22 in its rear wall 24. The frame 20 extends forwardly to form a U-shaped channel 26, the frame having a horizontal bottom portion 26 and two vertical lateral portions 26* and 26. The bottom and vertical portions of the frame define a rectangular opening 30. A rectangular panel 32 is slidably and removably received in the channel 26 to completely close and conceal the louvers 18 of the cabinet 14. FIG. 1 shows panel 32 in partially closed position in channel 26. Frame 20 is secured by rivets 21 to a rectangular front wall 23 of another frame 25 defining a sleeve. This sleeve has top and side walls 40, 41 and 42 fitted on the front end of the rectangular cabinet 14. Screws 34 secure the sleeve to the cabinet. The sleeve walls are provided with countersunk holes to receive the heads of the screws. If desired, a bottom wall 43 may be provided on sleeve 25 as indicated by dotted line in FIG. 3.
When the air conditioner unit is in use, the panel 32 may be removed. If desired, a fibrous filter element 32 (see FIG. 10) having the same shape as the panel 32 may be substituted in place of the panel 32 in channel 26 to filter air passing into the air conditioner unit when the unit is 1n use.
In FIG. 7 is shown another cover 10 according to a modification of the invention. This cover is adapted for use with an air conditioner unit 12 having both front and side louvers 18--, 18", 13. The cover 10 includes a frame 50 having a U-shaped top wall 52, U-shaped front wall 23 and U-shaped side walls 54, 56. Rectangular closed frames 60, 61 each similar to frame 20 are secured to the side walls 54, 56 by rivets 55 and front frame 20 similar to frame 20 is secured to front wall 23 by rivets 21. Walls 23 52, 54 and 56 define a sleeve which can be fitted on the cabinet of unit 12 and secured by screws inserted through holes 57 in wall 52. U-shaped channels 26 are formed in the several frames 20, 60 and 61 to receive front and side panels 32, 32 and 32 shown in FIG. 7 in position for insertion vertically into the respective channels.
When the panels are inserted in the channels of cover 10, then the front and side louvers 18, 18 and 18 thereof are completely concealed and covered. Then the unit 12 is not in use. Fibrous filter element 32' may be substituted in place of the panels when the air conditioner unit is in use.
In FIG. 8, air conditioner unit 12 is shown provided with a cover 10 formed by three rectangular frames 70, 71 and 72 having walls 24*, 24 and 24 secured to open front wall 74 and side walls 75 and 76 of the cabinet 14 by rivets 80. The several walls have rectangular openings at which are exposed screens 77, 78 of the unit 12". Channels 26 are formed in the several frames to receive panels for closing the openings 15, 17 in the walls of the cabinet 14*. Side panel 32 is shown in place in one side channel 26. Panel 32 is shown partially broken away in frame 70. The panel is omitted from frame '72 to show internal structure more clearly. The several frames 7 0, 71 and 72 are secured to each other by rivets or welding to define a unitary structure. In addition, screws or rivets 80 secure the cover 10 to the side and front walls of the air conditioner unit.
In FIG. 9, air conditioner unit 12 has only its front wall 74 open at 15. A cover formed by only a single frame 70 has a forwardly extending U-shaped channel 26 in which is removably inserted panel 32 shown partially broken away. Rivets 80 secure rear wall 24 of the cover 10 to the open front Wall 74 of the cabinet 14 of unit 12.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent A cover for a rectangular shaped air conditioner unit having a front wall with louvers therein, said cover comprising a sleeve around the front wall, said sleeve constituted by top, side and bottom walls and a bottom front wall, a frame secured to the side and bottom front walls, said frame constituted by channel-shaped side and front portion, the channels in said portions communicating with each other, the side channels being open at the top, and a solid panel slidably and removably mounted in said channels through the open top ends of the channels for covering and protecting the louvers in the front wall of the conditioner unit.
