HTTORNEY United States Patent Ofitlce Patented Dec. 10, 1963 3,113,796 QUECK DETACHABLE LATCH FGR A PQLICEMANEE HULEiTER Raymond M. Neil, 659 Highland Ave, Waterhur Conn. Filed Feb. 15, 1962, Eel. No. 173,429 1 Claim. (Cl. 292-46) This invention relates to a pair of holsters to be Worn outside of a police rnans overcoat and detachably supported by his belt, for housing a revolver, bullets, stationery, pen and pencil, flashlight, blackjack, handcuffs or claw, whistle, and other items necessary to the performance of his duties.
One object of the present invention is to provide a pair of leather holsters of the above nature, each of which has an expansion band latch constructed in such e. manner as to permit rapid opening of the outer flap of the holster by a swift upward movement of the top of the policem-ans palm.
A further object is to provide a pair of poli cmsns holsters of the above nature having separate compartments for the revolver and accessories which are accessible to both of his hands, neither then being located in the pockets of his uniform under overcoat.
A further object is to provide a set of holsters of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and manipulate, compact, uniform in appearance, and very eflicient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view, there has been illustrated on the accompanying dnawings, one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 represents a fragmentary front view of a police mans uniform, showing ap-air of holsters suspendec lrom his belt, outside of his overcoat, on opposite sides thereof, one of said holsters serving to contain his rev Ever and the stationery necessary to perform his duties, and the other holster serving to receive other accessories.
FIG. 2 is a side view, on a langer scale, of the revolver and stationery holster shown by itself, taken from the line 22 of FIG. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows.
FIG. 3 is a front view of the same, with the cover flap of the hol. c'l shown in closed latched position.
E6. 4 is a topplsn view of the some.
FIG. 5 is uv cross sectional view, shown in full scale, taken along the line 55 of FIG. 3, looking downwardly.
PEG. 6 is a fragmentary front view of the latch mechanism, taken along the line 6-6 of PEG. 4.
EEG. 7 is a cross sectional View of the some, taken along the line 7-7 of P163. 5 and 6, with the cover flap and expansion band latch shown in closed latched position.
FZG. 8 is o. similar cross sectional view of the same, with the cover flap and expansion band latch shown in unlatohed position FEG. 9 is a front View, similar to 3, of the accessory holster.
PEG. 10 is a side view of the some, similar to FIG. 2, showing in dotted lines, the position of the horizontal bullet holding straps.
FIG. 11 is atop plan view of the some.
FIG. 12 is a top view of the outer bullet holder shown in full scale, with bullets in the bullet strap.
FIG. 13 is a side view of the some, shown in full scale, taken from the line l3-l3 of 12.
HG. 14 is a firont view of the same, taken from the line t l -14 of F-lG. 13.
Referring now to the drawing, in which like reference numenals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numenal 1% indicates a policemans uniform, over which is worn an overcoat 11 having buttons 2 12 for detachably securing the overlapping front portions of said overcoat together.
The numeral 13 indicates the inside belt of the policemans uniform for supporting his trousers, in the usual manner.
The numerals 1 and 15 indicate, respectively, a revolver and stationery holster, and an accessory holster, both of which are preferably made of stiff leather and have outer cover flaps 16, '17. The holsters l4, 15 are adapted to be located at opposite sides of the police-mans uniform, adjacent his hips, as clearly shown in FIG. 1.
The holsters l4 15, are secured to the inside belt 13 by means of upstanding loops 18, 19, respectively, which pass through horizontal slots 11a formed in the overcoat 1 1.
In order to detachably latch the cover flaps 16, 17 in closed position upon the outer sides of the holstens 14, 15, provision is made of Ushaped brace frames 2t), 21, the sides of which are attached by three tubular rivets 22, 23 to the cover flaps lo, 17, respectively. Each of the brace frames A 21 consists of a U-shaped metal face 2 having Z-shaped angular flanges 25. Provision is also made at the bottom of each brace frame 2%, 21 of an angular lug 25 having on outturned ear 27, soldered to the face 24 and the Z-shaped angular flanges 25 (FIGS. 6-8).
Provision is also made of an arched central angular spring band 28, w .ich is secured at its bottom end by a rivet 28b to an upstanding metal strip 234; attached at its upper end by a rive-t 280 to the leather holster l4, l5.
Revolver and Stationery Holster Located within the revolver-stationery holster 14 is a revolver compartment 2), and an inner stationery compartment 3- 3, parallel therewith. The stationery c0mpnmtment 3i is provided with rectangular metallic pen and pencil pockets 31, 32. respectively, the latter being secured by rivets 33, 34 to the opposite ends of the compartment 38.
Accessories H olster The accessories holster 15 is provided with a. flashlight pocket 35, a handoufi or claw compartment 36, and a bullet compartment 37, the latter having on its sides a pair of staggered leather strips 3? secured at their upper ends by stitching to the sides of the compartment 37 and having a series of horizontal bullet straps 49 for detachably receiving bullets 41. A space 37a for a blackjack is provided at the inner end of the bullet compartment 3?.
Provision is also made near the top of the holster 15 of a whistle hook pocket 46, as clearly shown in FIGS. 9 and 16, which is secured to said holster 16 by rivets 47.
Operation of Latch In opvstion, when it is desired to open the cover flap 16 or 17 of either one of the holsters 14, 15, it is only necessary for the p lice'men to push his palm against the ear 2'7 with a swift upward movement. This will cause the arched expansion band 28 to be compressed, and allow the angular lug 26 to pass over it to the position as shown in FIG. 8, and thus perm-it the opening of the holder flap when the lower edges of the Z-shaped flanges 25 of the U-shaped brace frames 2%, 21 have passed up: erdly beyond the end of the stationery rneta'l strip 28a.
W11 re there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, end that the invention is not limited to the specific disclosure, but may he modified vand embodied in various other equivalent forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the mothfications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claim.
Having thus fuliy described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent is:
A quick detachable latch for a poiicemans heister havmg a. cover fie. comprising an inventedv U-shaped brace tframe attached to the IOWer end 0f said flap, each of the side edges of said brace frame having a rearwardiy extending Z-s aped flange, an upstanding reanwardiy arched angular iug open at its upper end seemed to the iower end of said Z-shaped flanges and the bet-torn of said brace firarne, said. lug having a ferwardiy extending ear at its lower end, and an angular forward-1y arched compressible spring band secured to the body of said holster in the path of said lug, whereby said iug will compress said spring band when said ear is engaged by an upward movement 1 4 of the p-ahn of the poiicernens hand to permit said oraee frame to move upwardly beyond the spring band and allow the rapid opening of said cover flap whenever necessary.
