Description

Nov. 26, 1963 P. F. SEIBOLD ELECTRIC SHAVER HAVING A CONNECTED com:
Filed Jan. 14, 1960 IN VEN TOR.
7 43 7 Z JeI ZaZZ United States Patent Ofiice Edilfiii Patented Nov. 26, 1963 Paul F. dcihold, 26665 York Road, Huntington Woods, Mich. Fiied Jan. 14, B69, Ser. No. 2,433 7 flaims. (-Cl. 30-34) This invention relates to shavers, and particularly to a shaver having an electric plug-in cord an integral part thereof.
' In electric shavers employed in the art, the shaver casing is provided with a socket engageable with a mating plug on a cord furnished with the shaver. Oftentirnes the cord is misplaced and the shaver is then out of service until the cord is found or a new cord procured. The plug engagement with the socket in the casing becomes loose and it is difiicult to maneuver the shaver and hold it in a manner to retain the plug within the socket. To overcome this and other difliou lties when a separate cord is utilized, a way has been devised of maintaining the cord in fixed relation to the casing and winding it thereon when the shaver is not in use. The winding portion is such that when the cord is unwound the casing is retained within the usually provided dimensions through the folding of fingers or the movement of a portion of the casing thereinto so that the same feel will be had when grasping the shaver as when a separate cord is provided therefor. With this arrangement, the cord is never separate from the shaver and no diflFiculty is experienced when using the shaver because of the separation of the plug from the provided socket.
A pair of L-shaped fingers may be pivoted on the rear end of the casing, recessed in slots in the rear end and the adjacent portions of the side walls of the casing so as not to interfere with the hand when grasping the shaver when in use. After the shaver has been used, the L-shaped fingers are then swung backwardly in extension of the rear end, the one branch being disposed parallel to the other and the longitudinal axis of the shaver and the other branch extending outwardly therefrom to provide a winding space. The end plug of the cord may then be inserted in a pair of apertures between the L-shaped fingers and the cord in double relation may be wound into the winding space of the L-shaped fingers and with the doubled over end tucked into the wound turns of the cord. With such an arrangement, the cord is maintained in secured relation to the casing and forms a neat unit package therewith.
-In another form of the invention, the rear end of the casing may be separate therefrom or a separate end plate provided having sliding extensions thereon, such as four pins which permit the end wall to move outwardly and form a winding space for the cord. The end plug is secured between the various turns of the cord and maintained in unit compact relation with the shaver casing. When the shaver is in use and the cord has been unwound, the end plate may be moved inwardly on the four pins to close the winding space in which the cord was wound to provide a compact casing when grasped by the operator.
In another form of the invention, the cord extending from the casing is wound about the side walls with a helical slot provided therealong which prevents the wound loops from sliding along the casing. A recessed portion having apertures is provided in the casing in which the end plug of the cord is inserted for maintaining the cord wound upon the body of the shaver casing.
-In still another form, the end portion of the casing may be pivoted on the axis of the shaver and provided with a winding space in which the end of the doubled cord may be secured and wound within the space by turning the end portion. The end plug on the cord is secured in an aperture in the casing and in the rotatable end portion for locking the latter portion against rotation and retaining the cord within the winding space.
Various other forms of the invention would be apparent to one skilled in the art of shavers for winding the cord upon the casing or portions applied thereto when one of its ends is conductively joined to the motor thereof.
Accordingly, the main objects of the invention are: to provide a shaver having an electric cord secured to the shaver motor and wound on the casing thereof in a manner so that when the cord is unwound the casing will be smooth to the grasp of the operator; to provide a pair of L-shaped fingers at the end of the shaver casing which may be moved outwardly from a position along the side wall to form a winding space into which the cord may be wound and secured when the conducting prongs of the plug on the end of the cord are inserted in apertures provided in the casing between the fingers; to provide winding space upon the casing of the shaver onto which the cord fixed to the motor within the case may be wound and secured against rotation through the use of the prongs of the .plug provided on the end of the cord, and, in general, to provide a shaver with an attached cord which is simple in construction, positive in operation and economical of manufacture.
Other objects and features of novelty of the invention will be specifically pointed out or will become apparent when referring, for a better understanding of the invention, to the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of a shaver embodying features of the present invention, with the cord broken therefrom;
FIG. 2. is a broken view of the structure illustrated in FIG. 1, with the cord wound upon the hinged supporting elements thereof;
FIG. 3 is a sectional view of the structure illustrated in FIG. 2, taken on the line 3-3 thereof;
FIG. 4 is a view of structure, similar to that illustrated in FIG. 1, showing another form of the invention;
FIG. 5 is a sectional view of the structure illustrated in FIG. 4, taken on the line 55 thereof;
FIG. 6 is a view of structure, similar to that illustrated in FIG. 4, showing still another form of the invention;
FIG. 7 is a view of structure, similar to that illustrated in FIG. 3, showing another form which the invention may assume, and
'FIG. 8 is a broken sectional View of the structure illustrated in FIG. 7, taken on the line 8-8 thereof.
Referring to FIGS. 1 to 3, a shaver it) is illustrated, having a casing ll with a shaving head 12 at one end and a handhold portion 13 at the opposite end. A pair of L- shaped fingers 14 is secured on the handheld end of the casing by pivots 15 within slots 1d at the end and the side portions thereof, as illustrated in FIG. 1. When so disposed, the handhold portion of the casing is not interfered with in any manner by the fingers 14. An electric cord 17, of conventional form, extends through an aperture 18 in the casing from conducting relationship with a motor within the casing, which is not herein illustrated as it forms no part of the present invention. A leaf spring 19 is secured within the casing by suitable means, as illustrated more specifically in FIG. 3, having the end portions 21 disposed in engagement with the side 22 of the square end 23 of each finger 14 through which the pivot 15 extends when the fingers are extended upwardly to provide a winding space 24 into which the cord 17 may be wound. When the fingers are disposed in the recesses 16, the ends 21 of the leaf spring 119 will engage the faces 25 of the square end portions 22 of the fingers 14 and will urge the fingers into the slots and retain them therein during the time the shaver is being employed, with the cord unwound from the winding space 24. The free end of cord has the usual plug 26 thereon which has the conducting prongs 27 extending from the end thereof. As clearly illustrated in the figures, a pair of recesses 28 extends inwardly of the casing between the pivots on either side of the leaf spring 1%. These apertures are of a size to receive the prongs 27 of the plug 2 6 so that after the winding operation the plug 2c is secured to the casing by the prongs to thereby anchor the free end of the cord and retain all of the turns within the recess 24. it may be desirable to Wind the cord doubled by inserting the prongs of the plug 26 into the apertures 23 and wind the cord from the end extending from the casing and from the plug together within the winding space 24- and tucking the doubled end of the cord into the turns wound within the winding space. This reduces substantially the time required to Wind the cord within the winding space or to unwind it from the space.
In FIGS. 4 and 5, a further form of the invention is illustrated, that wherein a shaver 31 is of the conven tional form, having a shaving head 32 and a butt end 33 which is engaged by the hand of the operator when shaving. The butt end as herein illustrated is separate from the casing 34, being secured thereto by suitable means, herein illustrated as by four rods 35 which extend into apertures 36 formed on the wall of the casing. The ends of the rods may be bent outwardly at 37 to slide Within a wider portion of the aperture so as to act as stop means to limit the extension of the butt end 33 from the casing 34-. This provides a winding area 38 into which the cord 17, which extends through the wall of the casing as above described, is wound about the four pins 35 and retained in position when the plug 26 is nested within the turns of the cord. It is within the purview of the invention to maintain the butt portion 33 in fixed position with the casing 34 and have a plate recessed therein and supported on the four pins 35 so that the plate may be moved outwardly from the butt end 33 to form the Winding recess 33.
In FIG. 6, a still further form of the invention is illustrated, that wherein a shaver 41 has an elongated casing 42 containing a threadli'ke recess 43 on the outer surface in which the cord 17 may be wound and secured therein when the plug 26 is retained in an angularly disposed recess 44 in the side Wall of the casing. Such an arrangement is possible where the prongs 27 of the plug 26 span the operating shaft of the motor which drives the mechanism to operate the head 45 of the shaver.
In FIGS. 7 and 8, a still further form of the invention is illustrated, that wherein a rotatable Winding element 51 is mounted on the end 5 2 of the shaver casing. This mounting is effected by having an enlarged circular head portion 53 on the element secured within a circular recess 54 of the casing. With this arrangement, the cord is double and the doubled end 55 is secured Within a slot 56 in the center of the oval-shaped portion 57 about which the cord is wound. After the element 51 has been rotated to wind up the cord, the end plug '26 is inserted through an aperture 58 at either elongated end of the outer portion of the element '51, with a prong 27 thereof extending into a slot 59 in the butt end of the casing 52 to retain the end of the cord fixed to the casing and the element 51 from rotating. It will be noted in this arrangement that one of the prongs 27 is disposed outside of the casing and only one slot 59 provided at each side of the casing for receiving a prong '27 for locking the rotatable element on the casing.
While, as pointed out hereinabove, various other arrangements may be provided for securing the cord permanently attached to the shaver, it is to be understood that the basic novelty of the invention is to provide means for storing the cord on the shaver casing in a compact manner and in unit relation therewith. T he arrangement is such that when the cord is unwound to permit the shaver to be employed, no discomfort will be felt from the hand grip portion of the casing on which the wire was Wound. In all of the arrangements herein illustrated, are provided for taking care of the plug at the end of the cord before or after winding through the employment of suitable apertures within the casing into which the terminals of the plug are inserted.
