ALONZO L. MARSAU AND HENRY O. HILL, OF MILTON, IOIVA.
APPARATUS FOR PAINTING WIRE FENCES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,506, dated November 25, 1884.
Application filed June 21, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALONZO L. MARSAU and HENRY O. HILL, of Milton, in the county of Van Enron and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Painting Wire Fences, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for painting wire fences in which revolving brushes are supported in apaint-reservoir which is moved along a wire in painting the latter.
The invention provides for moving the apparatus continuously along a wire without stopping at the fence-posts or removing the brushes out of contact with the wire in passing the said posts.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a. side elevation of the invention, and Fig. 2 is a crosssection on line 0c of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a modification.
A indicates the paint-reservoir, consisting. of a tin box having the front side, a, inclined outward from bottom to top. In the reservoir is journaled a transverse shaft, B, set at right angles to the side a, and a brush-wheel, O, is secured to said shaft near the side a. The brush-wheel, which is preferably made of a wooden core provided with bristles b or sheepskin b, is of such a diameter that it extends from near the bottom of the reservoir to a point above the upper edge of the side a. In a bracket, D, attached to the rear side of the reservoir is journaled another brushwheel, E, which rests in contact with the upper part of the brush 0 and inclines inward from bottom to top. .At opposite ends of the reservoir, in suitable brackets, F, are sup ported rollers G, which are arranged in line with the contact of the brushes, and serve as guides for the apparatus in moving it along a wire, H. The upper brush, E, is a bristle brush, like the brush 0, and receives paint from the latter as both are made to revolve in passing them along the wire H. As will be observed, the point of contact between the brushes extends out at one side of the reservoir, so that the reservoir will not come in contact with a fence-post so much as to interfere with painting the wire continuously.
The brushes, on the contrary, may be kept in contact with the wire across the side of the post, so that not only the wire, but its securing-staple, will be painted.
The reservoir is provided with a handle, I, by which it may be held painting the upper wires of a fence, and with rings J at 0pposite ends for attaching a strap, K, thereto, by which the same maybe supported from the operators shoulders in painting the lower wires.
WVhere the brush-wheel O is provided with woolly sheep-skin instead of bristles, as in Fig, 3, the periphery is to be'beveled and then concaved, as shown, to receive the sheep-skin therein to adapt it to hold the wire.
WVhat we claim is- 1. The combination, with a paint-reservoir, of a pair of rotary brushes arranged in contact with each other and in different planes, and with their point of contact projecting at one side of the apparatus, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with a paint-reservoir, of a pair-of rotary brushes arranged in contact with each other and in different planes, and the guide-rollers supported in line with the contact of said brushes, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of the reservoir having the outwardly-inchncd side a, the rotary brush G, secured on a shaft which is set at right angles to said side, and the rotary brush E, ar-
ranged obliquely with respect to brush 0 and supported in a bracket, D, attached to the rear side of the reservoir, substantially as shown and described.
at. In a wire-painting apparatus, a rotary brush of circular form, having its periphery beveledtowa-rd one side, substantiall y as shown and described.
5. In a wire-painting apparatus, a rotary brush of circular form, having its periphery beveled toward one side and concaved, and covered with sheep-skin having wool thereon, substantially as shown and described.

oorrection in Letters Patent No. 308,506.
It is hereby certified that in Lettersi Patent No. 308,506, granted November 25, 1884,
l upon the application of Alonzo L. Marsan and Henry G. Hill, of Milton, Iowa, for an improvement in Apparatus for Painting Wire Fences, the name of one of the inventors was erroneously written and printed Alonzo Marsau, whereas it should have been Alonzo L. Marsan; that the proper correction has been made in the files and records pertaining to the ease in the Patent Office and should be read in the Letters Patent to make it conform thereto.
Signedrcountersigned, and sealed this 24th day of March, A. D. 1885.
