Description

Jan. 8, 1963 J. E. JOHNSON ARCHERY DRAW AND RELEASE DEVICE Filed June l5, 1959 INVENTOR Jesse E Jobnsan BY n @ iiwiii Patented dem. S, i353 gti'lii ARC DRAW AND RELEASE DEE/'EEE ,tasse E. .iolinson9 Bnpont St., Sioux City, iowa whad lune i5, 1959, Ser, No. 82%,434 i Claim. (Si. 12d-65) My invention relates to an archery device.
An object of my invention is to provide a device which will allow for convenient drawing ot the bow string of a oow and arrow, which will hold and allow an easy release of the bow string.
A further object of my invention is to provide an arrangement in which a band around the wrist, which is attached to the device, will provide means whereby practically all of the strain ot the how string is absorbed by the wrist of the archer.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple arrangement for holding the bow string which can be released by a simple motion, and which will provide greater accuracy in shooting the arrow.
A further object of my invention is to provide an arrangement which is relatively simple in that it eliminates the use of other release devices which are more inconvenient to apply and use.
A further object or" my invention is to provide a device which eliminates friction of the bow string over the fingers at the moment of release, and also eliminates the so-called pinching of the arrow, and also eliminates most of the lateral bow-string movement around the fingers.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
FEGURE l is a substantially side elevation ofthe device as used with a bow and arrow,
FEGURE 2 is a developed View of the device in expanded form, and
FlGURE 3 is a plan detail view of the important holding portions of the device.
My nivention contemplates the provision of an archery draw and release device in which the strain of drawing the bow string is absorbed by the wrist of the user, and with attendant attached means for holding the bow string, which means can be easily released, and to thereby render the arrangement more accurate in resultant operation.
In describing the arrangement l have used the character 16 to designate a strap having the openings 1i to which is riveted at i2 a further strap 13 having the buckle 14, which buckle is adapted to engage any one of the openings il when the straps iti and 13 are placed about the wrist l5 as shown in FIGURE l.
Also riveted by the same rivet 12 is a Jfurther forwardly extending strap portion 16 which is attached to a suitable further buckle 17 with the member 1S of the buckle i7 being adapted to be received in any one of the openings 19 of a further strap 2t), which strap 20 terminates at 21. rIhe strap 2i? can be made of a double formation as shown in the enlarged detail in FGURE 3, and includes a plastic or other rigid insert portion 22 which is adapted to provide Z rigidity to the strap 2t? at this point, the strap 2@ being looped at 2da.
Suitabl glued or otherwise welded to the strap portion 2t) at 23 is a guard 24. The character 25 designates a sloping surface adjacent to the bent-over portion 26, which bent-over portion 26 is formed from the members 2t?.
The device is used in the following manner. The straps 1 and i3 are strapped about the wrist as shown in FG- URE 1, and the strap Zt? can be adjustably positioned so that the portion 2d will coincide approximately with the end of the thumb 27 (see FIGURE 3), with the fingers of the hand being approximately as shown in FiGURE l and with the thumb being as shown in FlGURES 1 and 3, the strap portions Zii and i6 lying within the palm of the hand.
The bow string, which is indicated by the character 28, carrying the arrow shaft 29 is placed at Eil within the loop thus formed and shown in FIGURE 3, and the bow string is then drawn rearwardly, it being noted that the wrist will provide the pulling action, and with the thumb 27 pressing against the portion Z6 thereby retaining the bow string 28 in position.
The arrow is sighted on the mark and then the thumb 27 is moved downwardly in the direction of the arrow 31 (see FGURE l) whereby the bow string will be released and the loop at Bti will tend to straighten out and will strike against the guard 24, this guard providing `means for preventing injury to the forefinger by the portion 26.
As a result of this device, all of the heretofore mentioned advantages are attained, such as accuracy, ease of operation, etc., and it will be obvious that other advantages are attained as well.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my invention without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and itis my intention to cover by my claim any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within its scope.
I claim as my invention:
An archery draw and release device comprising a strap including a portion adapted to be looped-over to receive a bow string therein, and whereby release of said loopedover portion would release said bow string, means for attaching said strap to the wrist of the user, said means including a pair of further straps attached to said strap, means for buckling said further straps together about said wrist, said portion including a rigid insert at the extremity thereof to provide means for stiiiening the same, said strap including an extending portion attached thereto to absorb impacts of said looped-over portion when said bow string is released.
