Linnell, 3520 Bryant Ave. 5., Minneapolis, Minn. Filed May 16, 1961, Ser. No. 110,490 2 Claims. (Cl. 2-161) This invention relates to golf gloves and more particularly to golf putting gloves.

An object of this invention is the provision of a novel golf putting glove, of Simple and inexpensive construction, for use in enabling a golfer to maintain a proper grip on a golf putter throughout the putting stroke.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a novel and improved golf putting glove arranged and constructed to permit the user to maintain the face of a golf putter square with respect to the ball, thus enabling the user to putt with a greater degree of accuracy.

A more specific object of this invention is the provision of a novel and improved golf putting glove having a gripping and positioning member afiixed to the palm of a glove, the gripping member being constructed of a compressible, resilient material having a recess in the upper surface thereof extending diagonally of the palm of the glovefor reception of a handle of a golf putting club therein to thereby enable the golfer to maintain the face of the putter square with respect to the ball throughout the putting maneuver.

These and other objects and advantages of my invention will more fully appear from the following description made in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein like character references refer to the same or similar parts throughout the several views, and in which:

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the palm side of a golf putting glove embodying my inventive concept; and

FIG. 2 is a transverse cross sectional view taken approximately along line 2-2 of FIG. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows.

Referring now to the drawing and more particularly to FIG. 1, it will be seen that the preferred embodiment of my novel golf putting glove is designated in its entirety by the reference numeral 10. It will be seen that my novel glove includes a palm portion 11, a back portion 12, finger encircling members 13 and a thumb encircling member 14. My glove 10 may be constructed of any flexible material such as leather or the like, the material being characterized by a tacky surface for enabling the user to better grip the handle of the golf putter.

A triangular shaped piece of material 15 has its marginal portions 16 aflixed to the palm portion 11 of the glove 10 by means of stitching 17, the stitching 17 extending along the marginal portion 16 towards the apex of the triangular shaped piece of material. Referring now to FIG. 2, it will be seen that the triangular shaped piece of material 15 when secured to the palm portion 11 defines a pocket 18 for receiving a gripping and positioning member 19 therein. Stitching 17b completely closes the pocket 18 so that the gripping and positioning member 19 is properly secured to the palm portion 11 of glove 10.

Referring now to FIG. 2, it will be seen that a gripping and positioning member 19 has a planar lower surface 20 and a concave upper surface, the former being disposed against the surface of the palm portion 11 so that the gripping and positioning member 19 projects outwardly therefrom. The gripping and positioning member 19 which is generally of triangular shape is preferably constructed of a resilient compressible material such as foam rubber or the like. Referring again to FIG. 2, it will be seen that the upper surface of the gripping and positioning member 19 is of concave configuration and that the edge portions of the member 19 are substantially thicker than the central portion thereof. It will be noted that the edge portion 21 which is disposed closest adjacent the thumb encircling member 14 is of lesser thickness than the edge portion 22 which is disposed closest adjacent the finger encircling members 13. It will also be seen that since the edge portions are thickened, an elongate diagonally extending recess 23 is defined therebetween. This recess, as will be described hereinbelow, is adapted to receive the handle of a golf putting club therein when the latter is gripped by a user.

One of the problems associated with the putting game of golfers is the inability of the golfer to maintain the face of the putter in squared relation with respect to the ball. It has been found that there is a tendency of many golfers to slightly break their wrist during the putting stroke especially during the rearward arcuate portion of the stroke. This results in the club being moved into angulated relation with respect to the golf ball at the point of contact with the ball. Many golfers develop gripping techniques, which are intended to maintain the face of the putting club in squared relation with respect to the ball but it has been found that quite often the golfer is unable to maintain this relationship between the putter and the ball. Beginning golfers also experience difficulties in putting since the handle of the putter is not gripped properly will cause the face of the putter to be disposed in angulated relation with respect to the ball and, of course, accuracy in the putting shots cannot be obtained.

It has been found that my novel putting glove 10 permits a golfer to grip the handle of a putting club so that the face of the putter will be maintained in squared relation with respect to the ball throughout the putting maneuver. In the embodiment shown, the glove illustrated in the drawing is a left hand glove and this glove will be used by a right handed golfer. It will be seen that when a golf club handle, designated by the reference numeral 24, is gripped by a user, the handle will be disposed within the recess 23 of the gripping and positioning member 19. It will be noted that this recess 23 extends diagonally of the palm portion 11 of the glove 10 adjacent the heel towards the space between the thumb and index finger. The gripping and positioning member 19 projects outwardly from the palm and when a golf club handle is gripped by the user, the edge portions 21 and 22 prevent the handle from being displaced during the back swing of the stroke. It will also be noted that the thickened edge portion 22 properly positions the club with respect to the fingers of the golfer when the latter are curved around a putter handle. This is extremely important since the club handle is prevented from being moved into contact with a base portion of the ring finger and the small finger. 'It has been found that during the putting stroke, slight movement of the median digits of these fingers causes slight movement of the putting handle and corresponding movement of the face of the putter. However, with my device no such movement is possible since the handle of a golf putter will be properly positioned when gripped by a user regardless of the manner in which the club is gripped. This permits beginners to putt with a greater degree of accuracy than was heretofore possible. It will, therefore, be seen from the preceding para graphs that I have provided a novel and improved golf putting glove which is arranged and constructed to permit a user to putt with a greater degree of accuracy than was heretofore possible.

It will also be seen that my novel and improved putting glove permits both beginners and experienced golfers to immeasurably improve the skill of their game. It will further be seen that my novel golf putters glove is not only of simple and inexpensive construction but functions in a more efficient manner than any heretofore know comparable devices.

It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the various parts without departing from the scope of my invention.

What is claimed is:

1. A golf putting glove comprising a palm portion and thumb and finger-encircling members, a positioning and gripping member formed of compressible material and being aflixed to said palm portion and projecting outwardly therefrom, said gripping member having a concave upper surface and a substantially planar lower surface, opposite edge portions of said gripping member being thickened to define a recess therebetween, said recess extending diagonally of said palm position and being shaped to receive a golf putter handle therein, one of said edge portions of the gripping member being disposed adjacent said thumb-encircling member and the other of said edge portions being disposed adjacent said finger-encircling members, said last mentioned edge portion being of a thickness greater than said first mentioned edge portion so that a golf putter handle disposed within the recess of said gripping member and gripped by a user will be properly spaced from the fingers and thumb of the user to enable the user to maintain the face of the golf putter square at all times with respect to the ball throughout the entire arcuate movement of the putting stroke.

2. A golf putting glove comprising a palm portion and thumb and finger-encircling members, a substantially triangular shaped positioning and gripping member formed of compressible resilient material and being affixed to said palm portion and projecting outwardly therefrom, said gripping member having a. concave upper surface and a substantially planar lower surface, opposite edge portions of said gripping member being thickened to define a recess therebetween, said recess extending diagonally of said palm portion and being shaped to receive the golf putter handle therein, one of said edge portions of the gripping member being disposed adjacent said thumb-encircling member and the other of said edge portions being disposed adjacent said finger-encircling members, said other edge portion being of a thickness greater than said one edge. portion so that a golf putter handle disposed Within the recess of said gripping member and gripped by a user will be properly spaced from the fingers and thumbs of the user to enable the user to maintain the face of the golf putter square at all times with respect to the ball throughout the entire arcuate movement of the putting stroke.
