It is well known that considerable difiiculty is experienced, particularly by a single aide or nurse, in lifting, transferring, or removing invalids from beds or the like, when in recumbent or prone positions, without changing or modifying the positions and possibly causing discomfort, pain, or injury, it being a desideratum, for the well-being of an invalid, to so lift or remove the invalid from a bed or support in such a manner as to retain the same recumbent position of the invalid and even when transferring the invalid from one support to another.
One of the objects of our invention is to provide an invalid lift or means for overcoming the aforementioned dilficulty wherein an invalid may be lifted or removed from a support or bed without modifying or changing the position of the invalid to thus preclude any resultant discomfort, pain or injury.
Another object of our invention is to provide a lift of the foregoing described character which is capable of being disposed in proximity to the bed or support of an invalid and which is equipped with means for supporting and lifting the invalid from the bed.
A further object of our invention is to provide a lift of the foregoing described character which is equipped with means operable for removing the invalid from the bed, disposing the invalid onto a supporting surface and transporting the invalid from one locality to another.
A still further object of our invention is to provide a lift of the foregoing described character which is equipped with a support for the invalid and which support may be adjusted in either a horizontal or inclined position to correspond with the position occupied by the invalid on the bed or to a position for subsequent treatment of the invalid.
An important object of our invention is to provide a lift of the foregoing described character having a frame for framing the invalid and an invalid supporting element disposed on the bed beneath said invalid and attachable to the frame to enable said frame to be raised above the bed with the invalid without a shift in the position of the invalid while being raised.
Another important object of our invention is to provide a lift of the foregoing described character including a body supporting element normally disposed on a bed under an invalid and a lifting frame disposable about the body for attachment to said element thereby eliminating the necessity for moving the invalid in any manner before lifting the invalid above the bed.
Still another important object of our invention is to provide a lift of the foregoing described character which is so constructed and arranged that the same may be operated by a single person, thus enabling a nurse or attendant to lift an invalid above a bed and transfer the invalid to a desired location without additional assistance.
A further important object of our invention is to provide a lift of the foregoing described character which is simple in construction, eflicient in operation, durable in use, economical in manufacture, and capable of being operated by others than highly skilled attendants.

depositing of an invalid in a previously assumedposition without modifying the position and, if desired, transport the invalid in said assumed position through the efforts of a single operator.
With the above and other objects in view, as will hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings from which the several features of the invention and the advantages attained thereby will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.

In practicing our invention as illustrated in the drawings, we provide a chassis having rectangular lower and upper frames 6 and 7, respectively, connected together in spaced relation at their corners by posts 8. The ends of, the frame 6 have swivelled thereto roller-mountings provided with rollers 9 or the like to facilitate movement of the chassis over the floor, it being understood that the mountings for the rollers 9 may be equipped with stop means operable for maintaining the rollers against movement relative to the floor and thus maintain the chassis in a stationary position when desired. An intermediate frame 14 is disposed between the frames 6 and 7 and has its ends provided with sleeves 15 mounted for reciprocation on the posts 8 whereby the frame 14 may be raised or lowered relative to the frames 6 and 7 as hereinafter set forth.
Each end of the frame 14 is equipped with a jack having a pair of spaced collars 16 in which are fixed the lower ends of a pair of upwardly extending spaced side portions 17 of a substantially inverted U-shaped standard 18 for vertical movement with the frame 14. Each end of the upper frame 7 is provided with a pair of brackets 19 equipped with sleeves 20 slidably receiving there-. through the side portions 17 of the standard 18. The standard 18 is formed at its upper end with a transverse portion 21 connecting the portions 17 together and with a reinforcing bar or portion 22 disposed subjacent the portion 21 and fixed to the portions 17.
Coincident ends of the frames 6 and 7 have fixed there, to a mounting plate 24 provided with a bearing 25 through which is rotatably journaled a longitudinally extending shaft 26 having an outer end equipped with a hand wheel 27 and an inner end provided with a sprocket 28. The ends of the frame 6, intermediate their lengths, are equipped with depending bearing brackets 29 through which is journaled a longitudinally extending shaft 30 for operating a link mechanism hereinafter more specifically described. The shaft is provided at one end with a sprocket 31 fixed thereto and rotatable by means of a chain 32 or the like trained about the sprockets 28 and 31 upon rotation of the handwheel 27. Relatively long end sections 32a of the shaft 30 are reversibly threaded, respectively, and have threaded thereon for relative longitudinal movement thereby threaded bearing housings 33. In the link mechanism, each of the housings is provided with laterally extending trunnions 34 or the like having pivoted thereto the lower ends of arms 35, the upper ends of the latter being pivotally connected to outward extending pivots or jack shafts 36. Each of the shafts 36 has pivoted to its outermost end the upper end of a depending link 37, the lower end of the link 37, adjacent the respective end of the frame 6, is connected to a transverse rod 38 having its ends journaled in bearings carried by a strap 39 fixed to and extending downwardly from the frame 6.
Adjacent each end of the frame 6, a pair of upwardly extending arms 40 are provided and have their lower ends pivotally connected to the adjacent pivots 36 and their upper ends to a pivot bar 41 connected to and extending through the sides of the intermediate frame 14. By rotating the shaft 30 in a selected direction, through the instrumentalitiy of the handwheel '27, the link mechanism will be operated in a manner to raise or lower the frame 14 relative to the frame 6 and as a consequence the standards 18 will also be raised or lowered in unison therewith. Disposed above the frame 7 is an adjustable body support or bed 145 having one end pivotally connected to one end of the frame 7 by means of a pair of spaced depending ears 46 connected by pivot pins 47 to similar cars 48 extending from the frame.
The opposite end of the bed is provided on its under face and at its corners with the diagonally disposed brackets 49 equipped with depending cars 50 formed with elongated slots 51 in which are mounted pivot pins 52 extending from the heads of bolts 53 threaded to the upper ends of downwardly projecting racks 54. By threading the bolts 53 to the racks 54, adjustment of the racks relative to the bed 45 may be obtained. The outer end of the frame 7, adjacent the racks 54, has fixed thereto and extending transversely thereacross a plate 56 provided, adjacent the sides of the frame, with depending bearings 57 in which are journaled the ends of a rack actuating shaft 58, the latter being equipped with pinions 59 meshing with the racks 54, respectively. Adjacent the racks 54, the frame 7 is provided withbearing guides 60 which bear against the heel face of the racks and thus maintain the racks 54 in proper mesh with the pinions 59. Intermediate the bearing guides 60, the frame 7 is also provided with a bracket 61 equipped with a sleeve 62 through which is rotatably journaled a worm shaft 63 having its outer end provided with a handwheel 64. t The opposite or inner end of the shaft 63 has fixed thereon a Worm 65 meshing with a worm gear 66 fixed to the shaft 58 and rotatable therewith. Upon operation of the handwheel 64, the shaft 63 will be rotated with the result that the worm 65, through the pinion 66, will raise or lower racks 54 depending upon direction of rotation of the shaft 63. It will thus be apparent that the angularity of the bed 45, relative to the frame 7, may be readily adjustable by means of the racks 54 upon rotation of the handwheel 64.
Attached to the portions 21 and 22 of each of the standards 18 is a vertically extending bracket 70 equipped on its inner face with a pair of spaced upper and lower hearing lugs 71 in which is rotatably journaled a stub shaft 72 by means of roller bearings. A transversely extending sleeve 73 is connected, by means of a depending collar 74, to the stub shaft 72 for pivotal movement therewith. The sleeve 73 has extending therethrough and in fixed relation therewith an elongated bearing casing 75 in which is telescopically or slidably mounted a rod 76 on a roller bearing 77 contained in the casing to facilitate ease of operation of the rod into and out of the casing. The
outer end of the rod 76 has pivoted thereto a U-shaped swivel 78 to which is connected the upper ends of a pair of straps 7?, such as webbing, of a sling by means of triangular shaped links 88. The lower ends of the straps 79 are connected to frame attaching books 81 by somewhat rectangular shaped links 82 for establishing a connection with a body embracing frame 85 to provide a litter for a purpose hereinafter more fully described.
A body supporting element or member 86 is provided and is constructed of flexible woven material, for instance, nylon and may be treated to render the same waterproof. The member 86 is adapted to be disposed upon a bed or other support between the latter and an invalid and over which the usual sheet may be spread, if desired. In the present instance, the member is provided with a ternary of spaced transversely extending straps having ends 88 extending beyond the longitudinal margins of the memher, the straps being secured to the underface of the member in any suitable manner and constructed of a material of sufficient strength for supporting the weight of an invalid upon the member.
The frame 85 is oblong and of a tubular construction having structurally integrally connected side and end rails, 89 and 90, respectively, with each of the side rails 83 having buckles 91 attached thereto, the buckles being equal in number to the ends of the straps whereby the ends of the straps are secured to the frames by the buckles thus connecting the member to the frame.
In use-assuming that the member 86 has been spread on a bed or the like and beneath an invalid disposed in a prone or recumbent position thereon and the frame 35 arranged on the bed in encompassing relation-with the invalidthe chassis is moved by means of the rollers to the side of the bed and the stop means operated to prevent movement of the rollers 9 and thus maintain the chassis in fixed relation with the bed B. When the chassis is thus positioned, the handwheel 27 is operated to raise the rods 76 and to permit them to swing over the bed B and above the invalid, it being noted that the sleeves 73 may be pivoted and the rods extended from the casings 75 to position the ends of the rods in alignment over the medial line of the member 86. When thus positioned, the standards 18 are lowered through the operation of the handwheel 27 a sufiicient distance to permit the hooks 81 to be disposed under and clasp the side rails 89 of the frame 85 appreciably inwardly of the end rails 90, whereupon, the standards 18 are elevated to lift member 36 together with the invalid a desired distance above the bed B. When the invalid is thus raised, the embracing frame may be grasped by the operator and moved towards and over the support 45 by reason of the pivoting movement of the sleeves 73 and telescopic action of the rods 76. When the invalid is thus disposed above the support 45, the member and frame may be lowered thereon or swung to the opposite side of the chassis 'and lowered onto another support, for instance, a stretcher S, as indicated by the broken lines of FIGURE 2, for transporting the invalid to another location. When the invalid has thus been lowered onto a support, the standards are moved downwardly to effect sufiicient slack in the webs to permit disengagement of the hooks from the frame and subsequent unbuckling of the straps from'the frame whereby the lift may be moved away from the bed and the frame removed from about the invalid.
- From the foregoing it will be apparent that we have provided a novel form of an invalid lift capable of being expeditiously operated by a single person for elevating an invalid above a bed or the like and depositing the invalid on an adjacent support and transporting, if desired, the invalid to another locality and without disturbing the'position initially occupied by the invahd.
Without further elaboration, the foregoing will so fully explain the invention that others may, by applying current 5, knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service. that all the features of the invention be used conjointly since they may be employed advantageously in various combinations and subcombinations.
It is obvious that the invention is not confined solely to the use herein disclosed in connection therewith as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is, therefore, to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described, as the same is only illustrative of the principles involved which are capable of extended application in various forms, and the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claims.
What we claim is:
1. In means for moving an invalid, a pair of connected spaced unitized mobile invalid moving devices adapted to be disposed in an operating position adjacent and outwardly of the side of an invalid support, said devices including coacting davit-like members operable from said position for disposal over the support for raising an invalid therefrom and laterally transporting the invalid between said devices.
2. In means for moving an invalid, a pair of connected spaced unitized mobile invalid moving devices capable of being disposed in an operating position between the confronting sides of a pair of invalid supports, each of said devices including davit-like means operable from said position for disposal over one of said supports for raising an invalid therefrom and laterally transporting the invalid between said devices from said one support to the other. g
3. In an invalid moving apparatus, a pair of coacting davit-like devices adapted to be disposed in a position laterally and outside of a side of an invalid support, mobile base-like means mounting said devices in a fixed spaced relation and adapted to be maintained in a position similar to said first-mentioned position to dispose said devices in said latter position for operation, said devices adapted to extend over the support and being sequentially operable from said latter position for raising an invalid from the support and laterally transporting the invalid between said devices from the support for lowering onto another support.
4. A portable invalid lift for disposal into an operating position laterally and outwardly of an invalid support and provided with a carriage for effecting said position, said carriage having ends equipped with invalid transferring means, respectively, adapted to be disposed over the support, said means including invalid lifting and sideling means operable from said position for raising an invalid above the support and transporting the invalid transversely over said carriage between said ends, said carriage having substantially corresponding opposite sides and being movable to dispose one of said sides in adjacent relation with a selected side of the support to facilitate operation of said last mentioned means from said position.
5. In an invalid moving apparatus, a pair of coacting davit-like devices disposed in spaced relation and adapted to be disposed entirely outside and laterally of a side of an invalid support, base-like means connecting said devices together and maintaining said devices in said relation, said devices each having a pivoted and telescopic member adapted to extend over the support, said devices being operable for raising an invalid from the support and said member operable for laterally transporting the invalid between said devices from the support sequentially for lowering onto another support.
6. A portable invalid lift for disposal into an operating position laterally and outwardly of an invalid support and provided with a carriage having ends and being manipulatable to effect said position, invalid transferring means mounted on said carriage at said ends, respective- Moreover, it is not indispensable ly, said means including invalid lifting means adapted to extend over the support for raising an invalid above the support and invalid sideling means for transporting the invalid laterally over said carriage between said ends from above the support, said transferring means being operable from said position to render said lifting means and said sideling means effective, said carriage having substantially corresponding opposite sides and being shiftable to dispose one of said sides in adjacent relation with a selected side of the support to facilitate operation of said transfering means from said position.
7. In an invalid lift, a chassis adapted to be disposed in lateral relation with invalid supporting means and having ends provided with vertical movable members, respectively, said members being spaced from each other and defining therebetween a transverse path extending over said chassis for the supporting means, lengthwise adjustable means adapted to be connected to the supporting means and being pivoted to each of said members for vertical movements therewith and pivotal and lengthwise movements relative thereto for vertically moving said supporting means and transversely moving said supporting means over said path in sequential order.
8. An invalid lift and transfer device adapted to be positioned laterally of and alongside a bed having an invalid supporting means thereon, said device comprising a mobile base, simultaneously vertically movable members on opposite ends of said base, arms pivoted to said members, said arms having slidable sections connected thereto, the outer ends of said sections being adapted to be connected to said invalid supporting means, said invalid supporting means being adapted to be raised by raising said members, swinging said arms toward each other resulting in sliding said sections away from each other and moving said invalid support means laterally over said base and between said members for subsequent lowering of said invalid support means on said base or adjacent support.
9. An invalid lift and transfer device adapted to be positioned laterally of and alongside a bed having an invalid supporting means thereon, said device comprising a mobile base, simultaneously upwardly movable vertical members on opposite ends of said base, horizontal arms pivoted at one end to said members, said arms having telescopic sections at their other ends, the outer ends of said sections being adapted to be connected to said invalid supporting means, said invalid supporting means being adapted to be raised by rasing said members, the lateral movement of said invalid supporting means over said base and between said members being permitted by the swinging of said pivoted horizontal arms toward each other and the sliding of the telescopic sections away from each other, said invalid supporting means then being lowerable on said base or adjacent support.
10. In an invalid lift, a chassis adapted to extend along one side of a support and having ends provided with vertical movable and pivotally mounted telescopic members, respectively, for vertical, pivotal and telescopic movements relative to said chassis and adapted to be connected to invalid supporting means disposed on the support, said members being spaced from each other and defining therebetween a path extending over said chassis, operating means carried by said chassis and connected to said members for vertically moving the latter to dispose the supporting means in a raised position above the support and with said members coacting with each other in response to said pivotal and telescopic movements for swinging the supporting means from said position over said path.
11. In an invalid lift,a chassis having sides and ends and being equipped at said ends with Vertical movable standards, respectively, for lateral positioning at the ends of a support disposed in sidewise relation with ohe of said sides, said standards being spaced from each other and coacting to define a transverse path extending over said chassisbetween said standards from one of said sides to the other, horizontally extending telescopic arms pivoted to the upper ends of said'standards for pivotal movements relative thereto in horizontal planes and adapted to be connected to invalid supporting means disposed on the support in lengthwise relation to said chassis, operating means carried by said chassis and connected to said standards for raising said arms to lift the supporting means above the support and with said members co acting with each other in response to their pivotal and telescopic movements for swinging the supporting means, when so lifted, over said path for disposal onto another support.
12. In an invalid lift, a chassis adapted to be disposed in proximity to and laterally of a bed equipped with invalid supporting means for removing an invalid reposed on the means from the bed, said chassis having ends equipped with standards for vertical movements, respec tively, relative to the bed, horizontally disposed arms pivoted to the upper ends of said standards for rotation in horizontal planes relative to said standardsprespectively, to enable said arms to be disposed in a position over said bed, said arms having relative movable sections adapted to be connected to the invalid supporting means for raising the latter from the bed, operating means carried by said chassis and connected to said standards to vertically move the latter for raising and lowering said standards to effect raising and lowering of said arms, respectively, said one section of each arm being movable relative to another section to permit pivoting of said arms towards each other from said position for moving said supporting means away from said bed upon raising of said arms.
13. In an invalid lift, a chassis having fixed and vertically movable frames, respectively, adapted to be disposed adjacent and laterally of a bed equipped with invalid supporting means on which an invalid reposes, said chassis having ends provided with jacks fixed to said movable frame for vertical movement relative to said fixed frame and the bed, arms pivotally connected to the upper ends of said jacks for horizontal pivotal movements relative thereto, respectively, to enable said arms 'to swing over said bed, said arms having relatively lengthwise movable sections adapted to be connected to the invalid supporting means for raising the latter and the invalid above the bed, operating means carried by said chassis and connected to said movable frame for vertically moving the latter to effect raising and lowering of said jacks and said arms, one section of each arm being movable relative to another section to permit horizontal pivoting of said arms towards each other for moving said supporting means along a path between said jacks and away from over said bed upon raising of said arms.
14. An invalid lift adapted to be disposed lengthwise of and adjacent a bed and the like on which an invalid is bedded, said lift having a pair of vertically adjustable jacks adapted to be disposed at the ends, respectively, of the bed, a pair of pivoted horizontal sleeves mounted on the upper ends of said jacks for horizontal pivotal movements relative thereto, respectively, arms slidably mounted said sleeves and having outer ends adapted to be connected to invalid supporting means disposed on the bed and beneath the invalid, said jacks being operable for raising the supporting means to a position above the bed to permit pivoting of said sleeves towards each other relative to said jacks and sliding of said arms within said sleeves for moving the supporting means away from said position for subsequent lowering of the supporting means and the invalid onto a support.
' 15. In an invalid lift, a chassis adapted to be disposed outwardly of and along one side of a support and having ends equipped with vertical movable standards defining a transverse path thercbetween and extending over said chassis, horizontally disposed telescopic arms pivoted to said standards for pivotal movements inhorizontal planes, respectively, and adapted to extend over said support and be connected to invalid supporting means disposed on the support in laterally spaced relation to said chassis, a support carried by said chassis between said standards for transversing said path, operating means carried by said chassis and connected to said standards for raising said arms and said supporting means whereby said arms are rendered effectiveupon telescopic and pivotal movements for swinging said supporting means 'over said path to dispose said supporting means onto said last mentioned support upon lowering of said arms by said standards.
16. In an invalid lift, a chassis adapted to extend along one side of a bed and having ends equipped with vertically movable jacks defining a transverse path extending therebetween and over said chassis, horizontally disposed sleeves pivoted to said jacks for vertical movements therewith and in horizontal planes relative to said jacks, respectively, arms slidably mounted in said sleeves for movement therewith and relative thereto, said arms adapted to be connected to invalid supporting means disposed on the bed for lifting said supporting means from the bed, a support mounted on said chassis and extending between said jacks for accommodating an invalid disposed on said supporting means, operating means carried by said chassis and connected to said jacks to etfect raising of said arms and said supporting means to enable said supporting means to be swung over said path, when so raised, upon pivotal and sliding movements of said arms relative to said jacks for selective disposal onto said support and beyond the latter.
17. In an invalid lift, an elongated chassis adapted to be disposed lengthwise of and adjacent the side of a bed and the like having invalid supporting means for accommodating an invalid in a preselected position thereon, said chassis having ends connected to vertical extending and adjustable jacks operable to raised and lowered positions, respectively, said jacks having upper ends pivoted to horizontally disposed telescopic arms for horizontal movements of said arms relative to said jacks, respectively, said arms adapted to be disposed over the bed and connected to the supporting means when said arms are in telescopic extended positions and said jacks in said lowered positions, an invalid support mounted over said chassis between said jacks and having a normally horizontally disposed invalid receiving surface, said support having one end pivotally connected to said chassis to permit said support to be adjusted at an inclination to dispose said surface in a contrahorizontal plane to dispose the invalid in a position accordant with said first mentioned position when said supporting means is disposed on said support, adjusting means connected to said chassis and the other end of said support and operable to adjust said support to the inclination, jack operating means carried by said chassis and connected to said jacks for rendering the latter effective for raising the supporting means from the bed to permit telescopingand horizontal pivoting of said arms towards each other for moving the supporting means away from the bed and over said chassis for lowering of the supporting means and the invalid onto said support.
